High-resolution computed tomography of the middle ear and mastoid. Part II: Tubotympanic disease.

Of more than 200 patients who underwent high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the middle ear, the vast majority had tubotympanic disease in one of its forms: middle ear effusion, tympanosclerosis, granulation tissue, tympanic membrane retractions, or acquired cholesteatoma. The CT appearance of each of these conditions is discussed and illustrated. Emphasis is placed on the differential diagnosis of tubotympanic disease by determining dependent from nondependent soft-tissue opacity using two CT projections.

Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses and face: part II. Pathological anatomy.

Computed tomography (CT) has added an important new dimension to the radiological evaluation of diseases of the paranasal sinuses and face. Using transverse and coronal scans, accurate assessment of the character and extent of mass lesions in this region can be achieved. Erosion of thin bony lamine and involvement of soft tissue structures of the face can be seen. Most important, CT is capable of precisely defining the extension of lesions into the pterygopalatine fossa, orbit, and cranial cavity, information that is essential for therapeutic planning.

Current status of echography (ultrasound).

Ultrasonic demonstration of the anatomy and pathology of solid and fluid-filled organs and structures of the upper abdomen, the retroperitoneum and the pelvis is now well established, as is its use for examination of the thyroid gland, breast, the orbit, the heart, the scrotum and soft tissue masses. Aspiration of cytological and histological material for tissue diagnosis and other purposes is performed in a number of centres. Echography and computed tomography of the abdomen are complementary and there is a trend towards combined units so that each service may be used more efficiently.

CT and finite element analysis of mandibular advancement device mechanics in a participant with obstructive sleep apnea: a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: This study constructed three-dimensional finite element (3D-FE) models of the upper airway and surrounding structures from spiral computed tomography (CT) data. An optimized fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was applied to investigate the biomechanical effects of the mandibular advancement device (MAD) on peri-airway tissues, refining its therapeutic mechanism in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: One adult patient diagnosed with moderate OSA underwent CT scans in natural sleep before and after 2 months of MAD therapy. 3D-FE models of the upper airway and surrounding

Gross tumor volume confidence maps prediction for soft tissue sarcomas from multi-modality medical images using a diffusion model.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accurate delineation of the gross tumor volume (GTV) is essential for radiotherapy of soft tissue sarcomas. However, manual GTV delineation from multi-modality images is time-consuming. Furthermore, GTV delineation is subject to inter- and intra-reader variability, which reduces the reproducibility of treatment planning. To address these issues, this work aims to develop a highly accurate automatic delineation technique modeling reader variability for soft tissue sarcomas using deep learning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed a publicly available soft tissue sarcoma d

Three‑dimensional finite element analysis: Anatomical splint fixation for Colles fractures.

With the rapid development of digital research in clinical orthopedics, the efficacy and safety of splint fixation can be better evaluated through biomechanical analysis based on a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model. It is essential to address the current gap in understanding the biomechanical implications of anatomical splint fixation for Colles fractures. By employing advanced 3D finite element analysis, the present study aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation, offering valuable insights that can contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of anatomical splint fixation in the cli

Food texture and vitamin D influence mouse mandible form and molar roots.

Industrialization influenced several facets of lifestyle, including softer nutrient-poor diets that contributed to vitamin D deficiency in post-industrzialized populations, with concomitantly increased dental problems. Here we simulated a post-industrialized diet in a mouse model to test the effects of diet texture and vitamin D level on mandible and third molar (M3) forms. Mice were raised on a soft diet with vitamin D (VitD) or without it (NoD), or on a hard diet with vitamin D. We hypothesized that a VitD/hard diet is optimal for normal mandible and tooth root form, as well as for timely M3

Adverse soft-tissue reactions around non-metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty - a systematic review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: Adverse local soft-tissue reactions have been associated with severe osteolysis and implant failure in metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (THA). Such a causal relationship has not often been associated with non metal-on-metal bearing surfaces. The purpose of this study was to assess the literature for cases of adverse soft-tissue reactions in non-metal-on-metal bearings in order to determine if a consistent histological diagnosis existed and if it was bearing-specific. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in Medline and Embase databases, utilizing keyword searches to targ

Unveiling the Mystery: A Case Report on Oropharyngeal Synovial Sarcoma.

Synovial sarcoma, originating from mesenchymal cells, represents a rare and aggressive sarcoma subtype. This case report describes a rare occurrence of synovial sarcoma in the soft palate, with only a few cases described in the literature. A 38-year-old male presented with a painless mass on the soft palate, which raised suspicion of an abscess and emphasized the importance of considering malignancy in persistent or progressive soft tissue masses, even in atypical anatomical locations. The diagnostic workup, including imaging modalities such as maxillofacial computed tomography (CT) scan, magn

A Rare Case of Neglected Rupture of Right Axillary Artery Pseudoaneurysm Mimicking a Soft Tissue Tumor.

Traumatic lesions of the axillary artery itself are limited to 2.9-9% of major arterial injuries. Pseudoaneurysms represent a pulsating encapsulated hematoma in communication with the lumen of a ruptured vessel. Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the axillary artery is a rare sequela of injury to the shoulder region. We describe a case of posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm involving the axillary artery, which was initially misdiagnosed as an aggressive soft tissue tumor. The man presented 10 years after an injury from a fall from a tree with a slowly growing mass in the right upper limb region and reduced

Simultaneous visualisation of calcified bone microstructure and intracortical vasculature using synchrotron X-ray phase contrast-enhanced tomography.

3D imaging of the bone vasculature is of key importance in the understanding of skeletal disease. As blood vessels in bone are deeply encased in the calcified matrix, imaging techniques that are applicable to soft tissues are generally difficult or impossible to apply to the skeleton. While canals in cortical bone can readily be identified and characterised in X-ray computed tomographic data in 3D, the soft tissue comprising blood vessels that are putatively contained within the canal structures does not provide sufficient image contrast necessary for image segmentation. Here, we report an app

Lower-extremity soft tissue infections with intra-abdominal sources.

This article describes a series of 3 patients who presented with lower-extremity soft tissue infections. Each patient was treated with prompt debridement by an orthopedic surgeon (J.F.G.) and required at least 1 additional procedure by another surgeon. These infections vary from superficial cellulitis to rapidly advancing necrotizing fasciitis. At times, the source of these infections is clear. Other times, no obvious source of infection exists, in which case the abdomen must be considered as a possible source of infection. A high level of suspicion, complete history and physical examination, a

Maxillo-facial trauma.

Injuries to the facial bones, orbits and adjacent soft tissue structures are common. Despite the increasing safety precautions in modern cars, facial injury is very often caused by motor vehicle accidents. Severe trauma to the face is a strong indication for radiological investigation. In the patient with maxillo-facial trauma, the radiological exploration of should answer two major questions: do the fractures involve areas that may alter the physiologic function of the sinuses, mouth, nasal vault or orbit?, and will the fracture result in any cosmetically detectable abnormality? The goal of t
