Chronic fatigue is a frequent complaint, but only leads to a medical consultation when consequences like sleep disturbance and reduced productivity become debilitating. Fear of a somatic disorder is usually prominent. However, the symptoms are usually physical and psychological signs of chronic stress. There is often a lack of awareness of stressors or conflicts, which would allow such a conclusion. Therefore, a few somatic investigations are recommended, since the list of possible somatic causes is long. Otherwise the patient should be prepared and motivated for a psychosocial counselling.

OBJECTIVE: Limited data suggest that eating-related concerns and behaviors, disturbances in mood, and altered temperament persist following recovery from bulimia nervosa (BN).

We describe 33 patients (31 women, 2 men; mean age 47 years) who satisfied research criteria for somatization disorder (SD), a disorder characterised by persistent or recurrent unexplained somatic symptoms beginning before the age of 30. A psychological assessment (Symptom Checklist-90) was performed on 19 patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria. Based on the reported data and the authors' findings 40 cases of larvate cyclothymia are described. The pivotal symptomatology of the disease involved masked hypochondriac subdepressions that imitated pathology of the bones and joints. In view of this fact the mental disease could not be recognized by the physicians and was diagnosed erroneously as a pathology of the bones and joints.
