OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between levels of basic metabolic elements and degeneration and ossification of the ligamentum flavum (LF).
SUBJECTS: Fourteen consecutive patients with degenerative lumbar stenosis, 11 with ossification of the thoracic ligamenta flava, and 11 control subjects.
METHODS: The basic elements of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and fluoride (F) in the specimens were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry, the phosphomolybdic blue method, and a fluoride-selected electrode.

BACKGROUND: Mercury poisoning presents a variety of clinical pictures depending on chemical structure, amount absorbed, total mercury burden, and individual factors. Distant skin lesions, after subcutaneous injection of metallic mercury, have not been previously described.
CASE REPORT: We present a homicidal, subcutaneous injection of mercury resulting in widespread skin lesions, remote from the radiologically visible mercury. The lesions appeared at 40 days and began to clear at 6 months after the injection.

A blackish staining found on the crowns of teeth of 51 skulls from the excavation of the medieval St. Olav's church in Trondheim was analyzed using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Magnesium deficiency produces a pro-oxidant systemic inflammation in rats. The purpose of these experiments was to determine if and when there is any oxidation of cellular proteins. We have found there is a significant increase in protein oxidation products, protein carbonyls, in both the brain and the kidney within 2 to 3 weeks on a magnesium deficient diet. The authors retrospectively evaluated 33 eye injuries due to metal missiles in 31 patients presenting to our emergency center over the last 3 years. Injuries occurred most frequently when the patients were grinding metal or working on their cars. The type of metal involved in the injury often dictates the type of ophthalmic reaction that will occur. A discussion of intraocular metallic foreign bodies with an emphasis on electroretinograms and metal analysis is presented.
