Spelling in oral deaf and hearing dyslexic children: A comparison of phonologically plausible errors.

A written single word spelling to dictation test and a single word reading test were given to 68 severe-profoundly oral deaf 10-11-year-old children and 20 hearing children with a diagnosis of dyslexia. The literacy scores of the deaf children and the hearing children with dyslexia were lower than expected for children of their age and did not differ from each other. Three quarters of the spelling errors of hearing children with dyslexia compared with just over half the errors of the oral deaf group were phonologically plausible. Expressive vocabulary and speech intelligibility predicted the p…

Exploring cross-modal plasticity in the auditory-visual cortex post cochlear implantation: implications for auditory and speech function recovery and mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this is to explore changes in cross-modal reorganization within the auditory-visual cortex after cochlear implantation … deaf group exhibited a progressive improvement in both Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) and Speech Intelligibility Rate (SIR), initially lagging behind the control group. Notably, a negative correlation emerged between auditory and visual cortical electromagnetic intensity values and CAP/SIR scores at the 12-month post-surgery assessment. CONCLUSION: Cochlear i …

Auditory steady state cortical responses indicate deviant phonemic-rate processing in adults with dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Speech intelligibility is strongly influenced by the ability to process temporal modulations. It is hypothesized that in dyslexia, deficient processing of rapidly changing auditory information underlies a deficient development of phonological representations, causing reading and spelling problems. Low-frequency modulations between 4 and 20 Hz correspond to the processing rate of important phonological segments (syllables and phonemes, respectively) in speech and therefore provide a bridge between low-level auditory and phonological processing. In the present study, temporal modulat…

ClearSpeechTogether: a Rater Blinded, Single, Controlled Feasibility Study of Speech Intervention for People with Progressive Ataxia.

BACKGROUND: Progressive ataxias frequently lead to speech disorders and consequently impact on communication participation and psychosocial wellbeing. Whilst recent studies demonstrate the potential for improvements in these areas, these treatments generally require intensive input which can reduce acceptability of the approach. A new model of care-ClearSpeechTogether-is proposed which maximises treatment intensity whilst minimising demands on clinician. This study aimed to establish feasibility and accessibility of this approach and at the same time determine the potential benefits and advers

A modified procedure for velopharyngeal sphincteroplasty in primary cleft palate repair and secondary velopharyngeal incompetence treatment and its preliminary results.

During cleft repair, velopharyngeal sphincter reconstruction is still a challenge to plastic surgeons. To improve the surgical treatment for cleft palate and secondary velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI), a carefully designed modified procedure for primary palatoplasty and secondary VPI was presented. Fifty-six patients (48 for primary cleft palate repair and eight for secondary VPI of previously repaired clefts) underwent this procedure from 1988 to 2001. The modified procedure is a combination of the tunnelled palatopharyngeus myomucosal flap for dynamic circular reconstruction of the pharynge

Active Ingredients in Quantitative Dosage for Children With Phonological Impairment: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Speech Sound Disorder (SSD) reduces speech intelligibility, affecting a child's ability to make themselves understood. If SSD is not resolved in the early years it will negatively impact children's education and general well-being. Effective and efficient speech and language therapy is known to resolve SSD and mitigate these risks. Intervention for SSD is often provided in inadequate dosages to be effective or efficient. Quantitative dosage is an overarching term for the different aspects of intensity of intervention which may impact outcomes. Existing literature on quantitative do…

Characteristics of cleft palate speech.

In recent years, interest in the nature of cleft palate speech and the influences on speech quality has increased. This overview of contemporary research reveals new perspectives on cleft palate speech development and the phonological consequences of early articulatory constraints. Cleft palate speech is perceived as the result of the synthesis between physical, physiological, cognitive and linguistic development. Developmental influences on cleft palate speech are considered in the context of early vocalisations of cleft and non-cleft children, followed by an examination of the literature on

Speech training aids for hearing-impaired individuals: I. Overview and aims.

Prelingual profound deafness typically results in aberrant or unintelligible speech production. For approximately 70 years, researchers and engineers have attempted, with little success, to provide electronic aids for speech training. Recent computer and signal processing technology has provided the impetus for several groups to implement new speech training aids. Following a review of deaf speech characteristics, several current computer-based aids are described. Included among those reviewed are two interrelated speech training aids which resulted from collaboration among the authors.

[Restoration of speech function in oncological patients with maxillary defects].

Speech quality was evaluated in 188 patients with acquired maxillary defects. Prosthetic treatment of 29 patients was preceded by pharmacopsychotherapy. Sixty three patients had lessons with a logopedist and 66 practiced self-tuition based on the specially developed test. Thirty patients were examined for the quality of speech without preliminary preparation. Speech quality was assessed by auditory and spectral analysis. The main forms of impaired speech quality in the patients with maxillary defects were marked rhinophonia and impaired articulation. The proposed analytical tests were based on

Enhancing stimulability: a treatment program.

Recent research on stimulability and generalization suggests that treatment of nonstimulable sounds results in maximum treatment gains (Powell, Elbert, & Dinnsen, 1991). It has also been suggested, however, that nonstimulable sounds are more difficult to teach, especially to young children with very small phonetic inventories. In this article, we describe a treatment program designed to increase the size of the phonetic inventory by "teaching" stimulability. Application of the treatment approach is demonstrated in a case study.

Individual Differences in Distributional Learning for Speech: What's Ideal for Ideal Observers?

Purpose Speech perception is facilitated by listeners' ability to dynamically modify the mapping to speech sounds given systematic variation in speech input. For example, the degree to which listeners show categorical perception of speech input changes as a function of distributional variability in the input, with perception becoming less categorical as the input, becomes more variable. Here, we test the hypothesis that higher level receptive language ability is linked to the ability to adapt to low-level distributional cues in speech input. Method Listeners (n = 58) completed a distributional

How Do We Allocate Our Resources When Listening and Memorizing Speech in Noise? A Pupillometry Study.

OBJECTIVES: Actively following a conversation can be demanding and limited cognitive resources must be allocated to the processing of speech, retaining and encoding the perceived content, and preparing an answer. The aim of the present study was to disentangle the allocation of effort into the effort required for listening (listening effort) and the effort required for retention (memory effort) by means of pupil dilation. DESIGN: Twenty-five normal-hearing German speaking participants underwent a sentence final word identification and recall test, while pupillometry was conducted. The partici

Speech Outcomes After Primary Palatoplasty and Presurgical Cleft Characteristics: Is There a Predictive Association?

Speech disorders related to cleft lip and palate exhibit different degrees of involvement and can occur even after primary palate repair. Hypernasality can be present as a result of velopharyngeal insufficiency, as well as nasal emission, weak pressure, articulatory errors and facial grimace, affecting speech intelligibility. Palatoplasty outcomes can be variable, and among the influencing factors are the surgical technique, the surgeon's experience, the postoperative care, and the patient/cleft characteristics. The aim of this study was to correlate speech results after primary palate repair …
