International Survey of Practice Patterns of Speech-Language Pathologists Working With Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate and treat swallowing and communication impairments in individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Standardized clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation and management of bulbar dysfunction in ALS have not yet been established. This study aimed to describe current international practice patterns of SLPs evaluating and treating bulbar dysfunction in ALS. HYPOTHESIS: Significant variability in practice patterns will exist across SLPs working in different clinical settings with varied resources. METHOD: A 26-item Qualtrics

Exploring Dysphagia Assessment and Management in Canadian Primary Care: A Clinical Practice Survey.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD), or dysphagia, is associated with malnutrition, pneumonia, and hospital admissions, and affects up to 35% of older adults in the community. This study aimed to understand dysphagia assessment and management practices among registered dietitians (RDs), speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and occupational therapists (OTs) working with adults in Canadian primary care and to help identify gaps and opportunities to optimize dysphagia patient care.A 22-question online practice survey was administered to RDs, SLPs, and OTs recruited through professional associations and

Speech and language pathologists' perceptions and practises of communication partner training to support children's communication with high-tech speech generating devices.

Purpose: This study examined speech and language pathologists' (SLPs') perceptions and practices of communication partner training with high-tech speech generating devices (SGDs). Method: Fifteen SLPs were recruited throughout Sweden. The SLPs answered a study-specific questionnaire on communication partner training in relation to communication partners to children with severe cerebral palsy and intellectual disability. The results were analysed with descriptive statistics (closed-ended questions, responses on Likert scales) and content analysis (open-ended question) using ICF-CY. Results: Twe

Deficiency of WARS2, encoding mitochondrial tryptophanyl tRNA synthetase, causes severe infantile onset leukoencephalopathy.

Pathogenic variants in the mitochondrial aminoacyl tRNA synthetases lead to deficiencies in mitochondrial protein synthesis and are associated with a broad range of clinical presentations usually with early onset and inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Of the 19 mitochondrial aminoacyl tRNA synthetases, WARS2, encoding mitochondrial tryptophanyl tRNA synthetase, was as of late the only one that had not been associated with disease in humans. A case of a family with pathogenic variants in WARS2 that caused mainly intellectual disability, speech impairment, aggressiveness, and athetosis

Velocardiofacial syndrome: learning difficulties and intervention.

Velocardiofacial syndrome, delineated in 1978 by Shprintzen, is a multiple genetic disorder, characterised primarily by cleft palate, cardiovascular anomalies, typical facies, and learning disorders. This syndrome with its recurrent pattern of anomalies has significant implications for education as it is linked to a variety of educationally relevant problems including learning difficulties, behaviour disorders, and speech and language deficits. While clinical research advances and new findings in cytogenetics enable early diagnosis and genetic counselling, ramifications of the syndrome in the

Exploring multidisciplinary team members' experiences of supporting eating and drinking with acknowledged risk in healthcare and aged care settings.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia is a swallowing condition which has significant health and quality of life implications. Speech-language pathologists provide assessment and support shared decision making to optimise swallowing safety. Many people elect to eat and drink with acknowledged risk. This study aimed to explore multidisciplinary team members' perceptions and experiences supporting eating and drinking at acknowledged risk decision-making and practice, and to determine resources needed to support teams in this area. METHOD: Semi-structured focus groups and one interview were facilitated with multid

Utilization of electromyographic biofeedback in speech therapy to attenuate the signs of facial aging: a case report.

Myotherapy intervention in facial aesthetics aims to attenuate wrinkles and signs of facial aging. The relationship between accentuated muscle contraction during chewing, swallowing and speaking and the appearance of facial wrinkles has been suggested by speech-language pathology literature. This study aimed to report the effect of electromyographic biofeedback associated with training of chewing, swallowing, and smiling patterns, during speech therapy intervention aimed at reducing the signs of facial wrinkles and furrows, in a 55-year-old woman. The therapy also included isotonic and isometr…

Nursing swallow screens: why is testing water only not enough?

UNLABELLED: The speech-language pathologist (SLP) standardized a Nursing Bedside Swallowing Screen (NBSS) tool for all patients admitted to the hospital. The adults engaged in the NBSS before oral intake (i.e., medication included) as part of the Brain Attack Pathway for patients with neurological symptoms. If the patient failed the NBSS in the emergency department (ED), then the screen was repeated again after the patient had been admitted before the SLP dysphagia evaluation. Fifty-three male and female patients ranging from 34 to 96 years old with an initial diagnosis of stroke or transient

Assessment practices of Irish speech and language therapists in the evaluation of voice disorders.

It is commonly accepted that the evaluation of voice disorders ought to include extensive perceptual, psychometric, and instrumental measurements. This serves to encapsulate the wide-reaching effects of such a disorder, from the physical impairment in voice production to the psycho-social impact of having a dysphonic voice. In spite of this, no international gold standard exists by which voice disorders should be evaluated, and so speech and language therapists (SLTs) are often tasked with developing an assessment battery for use in their own clinics. The purpose of this study is to determine
