The impact of differential patterns of physical violence and stalking on mental health and help-seeking among women with protective orders.

This study examined the severity of partner violence on women's mental health and help-seeking as well as perceptions of safety and protective-order effectiveness. Three groups based on partner violence victimization in the past year were compared: (a) women who reported experiencing moderate physical violence but no history of severe violence or stalking (n = 102), (b) women who experienced severe violence but no history of stalking (n = 142), and (c) women who experienced severe violence and stalking (n = 145). Results suggest that stalking has a unique impact on victims' mental health and p

[Consequences of violence--a public health issue. Strong connection between violence/threat and illness in both women and men].

Earlier studies have indicated that patients with chronic pain often have experienced physical abuse, but only a small number of population studies have demonstrated an association between abuse and chronic pain. During 1997 a population study was made in northern Sweden. Close to 15,000 people from 18-85 years of age answered a questionnaire about public health issues, including four questions about physical abuse and threats. In the present study the association between answers to these four questions and the other health questions were analyzed for men and women from 18-44 years. Almost 8%

Lifetime and current abuse, pregnancy risks, and outcomes among Native American women.

This study examines the effects of current abuse, battering during pregnancy, and lifetime physical and sexual abuse on pregnancy risks and outcomes among 30 urban Native American women. One-third of the women in this study were battered during the index pregnancy, and nearly two-thirds had been abused by their current partner. All but 3 women had experienced physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime, and nearly three-fourths had been multiply abused. Significant relationships were found between current partner abuse, decreased birth weight, and inadequate prenatal care. The variable, increas

Psychosocial factors associated with types of child maltreatment.

This explanatory, descriptive study examines whether a relationship exists between certain psychosocial factors or clusters of factors and parents' or caregivers' behaviors regarding the type of maltreatment inflicted on a child. This study examines physical abuse, neglect, and both physical abuse and neglect cases. Results show that physical abuse and neglect seem to be associated with very different stressors. These findings have implications for interventions and treatment plans for child maltreatment cases.

Childhood abuse and neglect, attachment states of mind, and non-suicidal self-injury.

This investigation examined preoccupied attachment states of mind as both a risk factor for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and as a mechanism by which prospectively assessed childhood experiences of abuse and neglect predicted the frequency/severity of NSSI behavior up to age 26 years in 164 individuals (83 females) who were followed from birth in the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk and Adaptation. Preoccupied (but not dismissing) states of mind regarding both childhood caregivers and adult romantic partners were correlated with more frequent/severe NSSI. Furthermore, preoccupied states

Association of collective attitudes and contraceptive practice in nine sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that gender norms affect contraceptive practice; however, data are mostly qualitative with limited geographical scope. We investigated that association quantitatively using collective community-level attitudes towards premarital sex and wife-beating as proxies for gender norms. METHODS: Data came from nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (2005-2009) for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in nine sub-Saharan African countries. Using multilevel logistic models, controlling for individual covariates and community-level indicators of wo

Pregnancy Coercion as a Risk Factor for HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Young African American Women.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy coercion (PC), defined as a restriction of women's reproductive autonomy, may be associated with increased HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk. However, there are few empirical studies defining the association between PC and HIV risk, particularly among vulnerable African American women. SETTING AND METHODS: African American women (N = 560), ages 17-24, completed an audio computer-assisted self-interview assessing PC prevalence and its association with HIV/STI risk. Women were screened for prevalent STIs using polymerase chain reaction assays. Multivariate

How Do We Get Partners to Test for HIV?: Predictors of Uptake of Partner HIV Testing Following Individual Outpatient Provider Initiated HIV Testing in Rural Uganda.

In a sample of outpatients (152 females, 152 males) receiving individual provider-initiated HIV testing and counselling (PITC) we aimed to identify factors associated with subsequent uptake of partner HIV testing. Purposively sampled outpatients receiving PITC at a Ugandan hospital completed a questionnaire immediately prior to testing for HIV, and then at 3 and 6 months post-test. By 6-month follow-up 96% of participants reported disclosing their HIV test results to their partner and 96.4% reported asking their partner to test. 38.8% of women and 78.9% of men reported that their partner teste

Caregiver parenting and gender attitudes: Associations with violence against adolescent girls in South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Violence against adolescent girls occurs at alarmingly high rates in conflict-affected settings, in part due to their increased vulnerability from their age and gender. However, humanitarian programming efforts have historically focused either on child abuse prevention or intimate partner violence prevention and have not fully addressed the specific needs of adolescent girls, including engagement of caregivers to reduce risk of violence against adolescent girls. Thus, the objectives of this analysis are to examine the whether gendered and parental attitudes of caregivers in South Kivu, Democra
