Injuries to tobacco farmers in Kentucky.

Like all types of farming, raising tobacco has many hazards that may lead to injury, disability, or death. Burley tobacco farming is a multistep process that is not highly mechanized. An 8-year emergency department surveillance system in Kentucky identified 674 injury cases related to the production of burley tobacco. Most of the injuries were a result of a fall, cutting and piercing instruments, or sprains and strains. More than 90% of the injured patients were treated as outpatients, and the average charge for emergency room services was $402 (range, $0 to $14,729). One quarter of the patien…

Lessons from atypical groin pain: presentation and treatment of a schwannoma.

A 16-year-old boy presented with pain in the right knee, groin, and hip after a touch football game. He was initially diagnosed as having a medial collateral ligament sprain of the right knee and an adductor muscle strain. Despite standard conservative therapy, he had persistent hip pain and migratory pain to the right lower abdomen and flank. A bone scan and abdominal CT scan were negative, but MRI revealed a mass in the cauda equina at L3-4, confirmed with myelography. A benign schwannoma was surgically excised without neurologic sequelae. The patient resumed daily activities 5 weeks after s

A preliminary investigation of injury prevention strategies in Netball: are players heeding the advice?

All netball players who sought treatment for injury during the three-day 1995 New South Wales State Netball Championships were surveyed. Of 940 participants, 131 incurred injuries (139.4 injuries per 1,000 players; 23.8 injuries per 1,000 playing hours). Ankle and knee injuries were most frequent, with ligament sprains, bruising/contusions, and muscle strains presenting as the most common injury types. The most frequent causes of injury were incorrect landings, collisions with players, being struck by the ball, or repetitive movements. Although most players heeded advice pertaining to warm-up,

Effect of orthotics on postural sway following inversion ankle sprain.

Orthotic devices have been shown to successfully modify selected aspects of lower extremity mechanics and enhance foot stability during the support phase of running. It was hypothesized that orthotic intervention would relieve excessive strain on the ankle ligaments and reduce postural sway, especially in subjects with acute ankle sprains. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if orthotics would reduce postural sway in injured and uninjured subjects. Thirteen subjects with acute inversion ankle sprain and 12 uninjured subjects were assessed for postural sway on the Balance System

Surveillance of work-related musculoskeletal injuries among union carpenters.

Combined data sources, including union administrative records and workers' compensation claims, were used to construct event histories for a dynamic cohort of union carpenters from Washington State during the period 1989-1992. Person-time at risk and the events of interest were stratified by age, sex, time in the union, and predominant type of carpentry work. Poisson regression techniques were used to identify subgroups at greatest risk of filing claims for a variety of musculoskeletal disorders defined by ANSI codes for body part injured and injury nature. Distinguishing different kinds of mu

Injuries in Junior A ice hockey. A three-year prospective study.

This 3-year prospective cohort observational analysis of elite amateur hockey players ranging in age from 17 to 20 years on a United States Hockey League team describes ice hockey injuries using a strict definition of injury, standardized reporting strategies, and diagnosis by a team physician. One hundred forty-two injuries were recorded for an on-ice injury rate of 9.4 per 1000 player hours. A player was 25 times more likely to be injured in a game (96.1 per 1000 player-game hours) than in practice (3.9 per 1000 player-practice hours). Game-related injuries were more frequent in the third pe

An overview of common soccer injuries. Management and prevention.

The most common injuries in soccer involve the ankle and knee joints, and the muscles and ligaments of the thigh and calf. Rehabilitation to restore strength and endurance after healing is extremely important to prevent a recurrence of the injury, which is much more severe and disabling than the initial injury. Sprains and strains of the hamstring and quadriceps, and injuries to the external and internal structures of the knee joints are frequent and relatively more disabling. Recent progress in the technical aspect of investigative medicine, such as magnetic resonance (MRI) imaging/quantitati…

'Hip' pain.

'Hip' pain is usually located in the groin, upper thigh or buttock and is a common complaint. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis, avascular femoral head necrosis and apophyseal avulsion are the most common diagnoses in childhood and adolescents. Strains and fractures are common in sport-active adults. Osteoarthritis occurs in middle-aged and older adults. Trauma may result in femoral head fracture or typical muscle and tendon sprains and bursitis. Septic or inflammatory arthritis can occur at every age. Septic arthritis, fractures and acute epiphyseal slipping are real emergency cases. Congenit

Vascular Problems in Elite Throwing Athletes.

There are approximately 880 and 3,600 major league baseball and minor league baseball players who currently are active in their respective leagues, with thousands of players in the collegiate, high school, and little league ranks. Although relatively uncommon, vascular injuries, such as thoracic outlet syndrome, axillary artery compression, quadrilateral space syndrome, and direct vascular trauma, can afflict these players. These career- and limb-threatening injuries can mimic often seen muscular sprains and strains in their early stages with nonspecific symptoms, such as exertional fatigue, w…

Imaging of acute sports injuries of the shoulder girdle.

Acute injuries of the shoulder girdle commonly result from sports activities and lead to imaging studies. Radiologists who interpret these studies should be familiar with traumatic mechanisms and the imaging manifestations of glenohumeral dislocation, acromioclavicular sprain, rotator cuff tear, labral tear, osseous contusion or fracture, and myotendinous strain. Imaging findings are crucial for making accurate diagnoses, grading the severity of injuries, guiding treatment plans, and managing the athletes' expectations for rehabilitation and return to sport. In this review article, we address
