Lymphoid follicles are a common feature of Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis. Recently, by using gastric mapping, we demonstrated lymphoid follicles in all of 62 patients with H pylori infection. This study was designed to address (1) the prevalence of lymphoid follicles in routine gastric biopsy specimens, (2) their correlation with chronic active gastritis, and (3) their predictive value with respect to H pylori infection. A total of 230 randomly collected formalin-fixed fecal samples (submitted to the Severance Hospital, Yonsei University) were selected for tests for human cryptosporidiosis. The stool specimens were examined for Cryptosporidium oocysts by acid-fast (AF) stain, auramin-rhodamine (AR) stain, and monoclonal antibody (mAb) OW3 fluorescence method specific for oocyst wall. The immunohistochemical distribution of the alpha 1, alpha 2 and alpha 3 subunit of the gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABAA) receptor was investigated in the rat brain using affinity-purified antibodies against unique parts of the amino acid sequence of the respective subunits. The distribution of the 3 subunits differed markedly from each other indicating heterogeneity of the GABAA-receptor composition in different brain regions and at various receptive compartments (dendrites or somata) of neuronal cells.

Simple methods which can be used in any modest laboratory for the diagnosis of Cryptosporidiosis in human and animal faeces are described. These methods may be applied to duodenal and lung aspirations. The Ziehl-Nelseen and Köster modified methods were found to be suitable in the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium due to their specificity and simplicity as compared to other staining methods. Köster modified method is more specific in demonstrating the sporozoïtes.

The aim of the study was to compare culture with microscopic examination of haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sections in the identification of Helicobacter pylori in gastric antral mucosa. Duplicate gastric antral biopsies from 89 patients were cultured and examined histologically for H pylori. H pylori was cultured in 46 cases (51%) and identified histologically in 63 (71%). Multiple foci of micronodular or tubulopapillary structures were noted in the rete testis of 13 cases of undescended testes. These structures were lined by low columnar to cuboidal epithelium, showed back-to-back crowding, and were supported by a thin lamina propria. These changes, referred to as adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis, appear to be a frequent finding in the undescended testis. An age-matched control group did not show any of these features.

The distribution and synthesis of type I and type III collagens in the mouse molar tooth root have been investigated by correlating light and electron immunohistochemical data. The heat response of five human tumor biopsies has been examined using the fluorescent probe dansyl lysine and multiparameter flow cytometry. Dansyl lysine has previously been shown to possess specificity for heat killed mammalian cells. The human tumors tested included a cervical squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, colon adenocarcinoma, ovarian carcinoma, and a mesothelioma. We report two cases of acquired toxoplasmic lymphadenitis, one with toxoplasmic cysts and the organisms of Toxoplasma gondii and the other with the organisms only. These cysts and organisms were observed in paraffin-embedded sections, touch smears and ultrathin sections for electron microscopy. Previous studies in cat, rat, and swine have implicated fiber type as influencing the halothane and caffeine contracture test used to diagnose malignant hyperthermia (MH). Three common blue nevi from skin of the trunk and upper extremities, and 5 from oral mucosae were studied using an immunoperoxidase stain for S-100 protein. The skin lesions were uniformly negative whereas all of the oral mucosal lesions contained numerous positively stained dendritic cells. Biopsies from patients with Jorge Lobo's disease (keloid blastomycosis) and paracoccidioidomycosis (South American blastomycosis), caused respectively by Paracoccidioides loboi a non-cultivated fungus and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, were stained with six different dyes having the property of forming complexes with some polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. The cell-walls of both fungi showed similar staining characteristics, suggesting a similar chemical structure. The role of the fungal cell-walls in evasion mechanisms is discussed.

Microfibrils are the insoluble, 10- to 12-nm components of the extracellular matrix that are involved in elastogenesis. Using histochemical methods for mucins, we have studied duodeno-jejunal biopsies obtained from infants with proved coeliac disease (19 subjects with subtotal villous atrophy and 11 subjects with partial villous atrophy) and from controls with histologically normal mucosa.
