We introduce a nanocalorimetric technique based on microsecond-pulsed heating (µs-PHnC) that enables high-sensitivity, quasi-isothermal heat capacity measurements on nanoscale samples. Such resolution is critical for exploring thermodynamic signatures in low-dimensional materials, where conventional techniques fall short. By confining thermal excitation to microsecond timescales, this approach minimizes lateral heat diffusion, reduces heat capacity addenda to below 10⁻⁹ J K-1, and achieves noise densities as low as 75 pJ K⁻¹ √Hz mm⁻², unlocking precise thermodynamic characterization of subnano

To meet the requirements of effectiveness and strength in actual engineering, based on the dynamic fracture characteristics, the dynamic propagation of orthogonal anisotropic interface cracks in piezoelectric bimaterials was analyzed. By performing Laplace transformation and Fourier transformation on the governing equations, the problem was transformed into a singular integral equation. Using the Chebyshev point method and Laplace inversion, the stress and electric displacement intensity factors at the crack tip of the orthogonal anisotropic interface were obtained. The results show that the c

In critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure, thoracic images are essential for evaluating the nature, extent and progression of the disease, and for clinical management decisions. For this purpose, computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard. However, transporting patients to the radiology suite and exposure to ionized radiation limit its use. Furthermore, a CT scan is a static diagnostic exam for the thorax, not allowing, for example, appreciation of "lung sliding". Its use is also unsuitable when it is necessary to adapt or decide to modify mechanical ventilation parameters a

The formation of aggregates and amyloids, a hallmark of many protein misfolding diseases, depends on many intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Many approaches (in vitro, in vivo, and in silico) have been attempted to inhibit the aggregation process so that the progression of these diseases can be controlled. We investigate the effect of a static electric field (EF; 120 V cm-1 and 200 V cm-1) on the conformational change of elastin protein using light scattering, spectroscopy, and microscopy techniques. Laser light scattering and photoluminescence spectroscopy show the formation of fibrils of unexp

The superior colliculus is a major brain stem structure for the production of saccadic eye movements. Electrical stimulation at any given point in the motor map generates saccades of defined amplitude and direction. It is unknown how this saccade map is affected by strabismus. Three macaques were raised with exotropia, an outwards ocular deviation, by detaching the medial rectus tendon in each eye at age 1 mo. The animals were able to make saccades to targets with either eye and appeared to alternate fixation freely. To probe the organization of the superior colliculus, microstimulation was ap

INTRODUCTION: The non-ionizing radiation (NIR) contains large range of wavelengths and frequencies from vacuum ultraviolet (UV) radiation to static electric and magnetic fields. Biological effects of electromagnetic (EM) radiation depend greatly on wavelength and other physical parameters.
OPTICAL RADIATION: The Sun is the most significant source of environmental UV exposure, so that outdoor workers are at risk of chronic over-exposure. Also exposure to short-wave visible light is associated with the aging and degeneration of the retina. Especially hazardous are laser beams focused to a small

The correlation between electric source asymmetry in the brain and potential amplitude asymmetry developed on the scalp was investigated using a computerized analytical prolate spheroid model of the head. The source was modeled by a single current dipole located in the occipital region of the brain. The potential created by the dipole was calculated using Laplace's equation with boundary conditions while allowing a quasi-static formulation and linear media. The dipole was located in the inner part of a four-compartment medium representing the scalp, the skull (with non-isotropic conduction), t

Experimental studies reveal that nanosecond-pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) trigger lipid peroxidation. However, how this oxidatively preconditioned state dynamically influences membrane breakdown during subsequent exposures remains a critical blind spot. To resolve this complex interplay, we first quantified how oxidized lipids reshape transmembrane energy landscapes to drive a pre-sensitized membrane state and then mapped spatial causality by colocalizing early pore nucleation sites with oxidized polar domains. Finally, we captured temporal dynamics by tracking non-equilibrium electroporatio

This study presents a comprehensive computational investigation of the adsorption and sensing potential of pristine and doped B12N12 nanocages B12N12, AlB11N12, and B12N11P toward cyanogen bromide (BrCN), a highly toxic gas. Equilibrium structures of the BrCN complexes are optimized at the ωB97XD/6-31 G (d, p) level, and adsorption energies, thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔG), and electronic descriptors are calculated. Interaction analyses are performed using atoms in molecules, reduced density gradient, molecular electrostatic potential, and electron localization function approaches. The effec

The subject of this article is the development of an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) for the removal of floating debris. A twin-hulled boat with four thrusters placed at the corners of the vessel is used for this purpose. The trash is collected in a storage space through a timing belt driven by an electric motor. The debris is accumulated in a funnel positioned at the front of the boat and subsequently raised through this belt into the garbage bin. The boat is equipped with a spherical camera, a long-range 2D LiDAR, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) for simultaneous localization and mappin

Pulsed-Field Ablation (PFA) is a non-thermal technique for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Predictive numerical models capable of reliably predicting lesion size and shape remain limited. We introduce a biophysics-grounded and inherently anisotropic model for cardiac PFA, derived by homogenization of a microscopic electroporation model. Unlike standard approaches relying on nonlinear tissue conductivities and macroscopic electric-field-based ablation criteria, our framework naturally incorporates cellular geometry and orientation through the local transmembrane voltage, which provides a

Assessing heart disease and evaluating drug-induced cardiotoxicity require a deep understanding of the contractile properties of cardiac tissue, particularly at the level of individual cardiomyocytes. Traditional methods for measuring cardiomyocyte contractility present several challenges, including limitations in real-time detection, complex and costly sensing platforms, and biocompatibility issues. To address these challenges, we introduce an innovative magnetic sensor that utilizes a flexible coil cantilever, pioneering the application of electromagnetic induction for detecting cardiomyocyt

The ionospheric conductance is the major quantity that determines the interaction of the magnetosphere with the ionosphere, where the magnetosphere is the large region of space affected by Earth's geomagnetic field, and the ionosphere is its electrically conducting inner boundary, lying right on the edge of the atmosphere. Storms and substorms in space dissipate their energy through ionospheric currents, which heat the atmosphere and disrupt satellite orbits. The ionospheric conductance has, heretofore, been estimated using the staticized physics known as electrostatic theory, which finds that

Janus Sb and Bi monolayers as a new class of 2D topological insulator materials, which could be fulfilled by asymmetrical functionalizations with methyl or hydroxyl, are demonstrated by first-principles spin-orbit coupling (SOC) electronic structure calculations to conflate nontrivial topology, Rashba splitting and valley-contrast circular dichroism. Cohesive energies and phonon frequency dispersion spectra indicate that all Janus Sb and Bi monolayers possess a structural stability in energetic statics but represent virtual acoustic phonon vibrations of the hydrogen atoms passivating on monola

Insufficient blood supply to the brain causes a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or a stroke. One of the causes to insufficient blood supply is cerebral artery stenosis. In this study, the feasibility of bioimpedance for monitoring such stenosis was analyzed. Simulations were conducted on a realistic numerical model of the head, focusing on the left middle cerebral artery (LMCA). Tissues were assumed to act as linear isotropic volume conductors, and the quasi-static approximation was applied. Electrical potentials were calculated by solving Poisson's equation, using the finite volume method (FV

Static wrist orthoses (SWOs) are used in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) with some drawbacks. As an alternate approach to SWOs, an active closed-loop wrist control strategy based on the principles of functional electrical stimulation was proposed to limit wrist movements. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the proposed 'neuro-orthosis' (NeO) system resulted in less restriction in the hand compared to clinically accepted custom-made SWOs while limiting the wrist movements. A case-control study was designed to determine the specific effects of the system on patients

Standing and walking are complex activities which require integral skeletal-muscular and central nervous systems. Body is usually, evenly distributed between both the lower limbs with 40% on the ball of the foot and 60% on the heel, therefore, the body's centre of gravity falls between the feet in correspondence to Chopart's articulation. Some diseases can influence standing and walking including cardiovascular diseases (chronic edema, claudication, cardiopathies etc.) neurosensorial ones (cataract, Menière's disease, Parkinson's disease etc.) and orthopedic ones (kyphosis, scoliosis, hallux v

The pineal gland, which in humans is located near the anatomical center of the brain, is normally responsive to visible electromagnetic fields (ie light) since the eyes are functionally connected to the pineal gland by a series of neurons. Normally, the pineal gland produces low amounts of melatonin during the day and high amounts at night; this rhythm is reflected in the blood melatonin concentrations which are higher at night than during the day. In both man and lower mammals, their exposure to light at night is followed by a drop in pineal melatonin production and blood melatonin levels. Li

Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation, are used in the treatment of neurological disorders. However, the mechanisms by which electric fields modulate cortical network activity are only partially understood. Our aim was to determine the modulation of spontaneous cortical activity by static electric fields and their underlying network mechanisms, which we investigated in vitro and in silico. Neocortical slices were exposed to constant fields of varying intensities and directions. We measured their effect on slow oscillations (SOs, <1 Hz), whic

Three-dimensional tumor-on-chip systems better reproduce the spatial organization of tumor cells within extracellular-matrix-based microenvironments than conventional two-dimensional cultures, yet their integration with quantitative, non-destructive monitoring tools remains limited. Electrical bioimpedance provides a label-free approach for real-time assessment of living 3D tissues, but its implementation in perfused millimeter-scale microfluidic environments requires rigorous electrical and geometrical validation. In this study, we designed and electromagnetically validated an integrated copl
