Group B streptococcal meningitis in a diabetic adult.

A rare case of adult group B streptococcal meningitis is presented. The association with diabetes mellitus is emphasized and attention is drawn to microscopic and serological confusion that may arise in differentiating it from pneumococcal meningitis.

Colonization and infection of mothers and neonates with group B streptococci in three Italian hospitals.

In the absence of previous published studies from Italy on the epidemiology of group B streptococci we investigated 1516 mothers at delivery and 1294 neonates in three hospitals. Of mothers in labour, 7.5% were colonized with group B streptococci and 4.9% of their babies. Of the neonates born to a positive mother 45.1% were colonized, whilst only 2.2% of babies born to a negative mother were colonized. For the mothers, the vagina was colonized more often (7.3% of all women) than the cervix (6.0%), the urethral meatus (3.9%) or the rectum (2.9%). For the neonates, the rates of colonization of t

Group G streptococcal colonization and sepsis in neonates.

Group G streptococci were isolated from the blood of seven neonates over a five-year period at the New York Hospital. All but two were born near term. All presented clinically with signs and symptoms of neonatal sepsis. Only one case was associated with a major complication--epidermolysis bullosa; this patient died. Two presented as late-onset sepsis at 11 and 12 days of age. Six of the seven responded promptly to antibiotic therapy. A one-year survey was carried out of colonization with groups B and G streptococci at the time of discharge (day 3). Colonization with group G streptococci varied

Streptococcus group B: an old bug with new dangers.

Infection of the newborn infant with Group B hemolytic streptococcus is increasing in importance as other pathogens decline. Such infection may appear within the first 48 hours of life and resemble respiratory distress syndrome, or around the tenth day, when signs of meningeal irritation may be present. Early onset disease may be due to any of the five serotypes of the Group B streptococcus and is fatal in a high percentage of cases. Late onset infection usually is due to serotype III. The epidemiologic aspects of early and late infection appear to differ, and a nosocomial source may be involv

[Microflora and its antibiotic sensitivity in chronic pharyngitis treated by cryotherapy].

Antibiotic sensitivity of the pharynx mucosa microflora in patients with chronic pharyngitis subjected to cryotherapy was studied. Examination of 36 patients showed that cryotherapy at a temperature of -1950 markedly decreased the number of the grown colonies, their qualitative characteristics being changed. In 10 days both the quantitative and the qualitative characteristics of the flora completely reduced. The cryotherapy did not change the virulence of the flora and its sensitivity to antibiotics.

Clinical and Molecular Characteristics of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis Bacteremia in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) is an emerging cause of invasive infection, particularly in aging populations. We investigated the clinical and genomic characteristics of SDSE bacteremia at a Japanese medical center serving a large older-adult population. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed 73 consecutive episodes of SDSE bacteremia, including 63 initial and 10 recurrent episodes, from April 2020 through September 2024. Clinical features were compared with those of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) bacteremia. Whole-genome sequenc…

Whole genome sequence based capsular typing and antimicrobial resistance prediction of Group B streptococcal isolates from colonized pregnant women in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is one of the major bacterial pathogens responsible for neonatal sepsis. Whole genome sequencing has, in recent years, emerged as a reliable tool for capsular typing and antimicrobial resistance prediction. This study characterized vaginal and rectal isolates of Group B Streptococcus obtained from pregnant women in Port Harcourt, Nigeria using a whole-genome sequence-based approach. RESULTS: Capsular types Ia, Ib, II, III, IV and V were detected among the 43 isolates sequenced. Twelve sequence types (STs) were identified, with …

Mycobacterium leprae is identified in the oral mucosa from paucibacillary and multibacillary leprosy patients.

All isolated bacteria were sensitive to the probabilist treatment and outcome was favorable. PCR has significantly improved the performance and the delay of IOA diagnosis in children, for which K. kingae turned out to be the first causative ag …

Delayed Infective Endocarditis with Mycotic Aneurysm Rupture below the Mechanical Valved Conduit after the Bentall Procedure.

UNLABELLED: The Bentall procedure is the gold standard for treating aortic dissection complicated with valvular and ascending aorta disease. Recent results for this procedure have been excellent; nearly 100% of patients remain free of infective endocarditis in long-term follow-up. We report a case of delayed Streptococcus agalactiae infective endocarditis complicated by mycotic aneurysm in a man who had undergone the Bentall procedure with a mechanical valve conduit 15 years previously. The mycotic aneurysm was located in the remnant aortic root, below the mechanical valve conduit, and later r…

[Acute multifocal osteomyelitis caused by haemolytic group B streptococci].

Invasive infections due to group B streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae) usually occur in the peri- and neonatal setting or in adults with chronic underlying diseases. In the presented case a severe infection of haematogenous osteomyelitis caused by group B streptococci in a previously healthy 68-year-old woman is reported. Group B streptococci were isolated in three of three blood culture bottles drawn from the patient at the time of admission to hospital due to fever of unknown cause and pain in the upper and lower extremities as well as the back. A technetium scan showed involvement of th…

In vitro Activity of Lefamulin Against the Common Respiratory Pathogens Isolated From Mainland China During 2017-2019.

PURPOSE: Lefamulin is a novel antibiotic approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2019 for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). In this study we evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of lefamulin in order to better understand its antibiogram. METHODS: The test strains were isolated from patients across China during the period from 2017 to 2019, including 634 strains of respiratory pathogens. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of lefamulin and comparators were determined by broth microdilution method. RESULTS: Lefamulin showed potent ac
