Optimizing Web Links Used in Digital Vaccination Invitations to Raise Trust and Booking Intention: 3 Online Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: People are encouraged to respond swiftly to digital health invitations, but they can be (rightly) skeptical about their legitimacy. OBJECTIVE: Drawing on digital communication theory and psychological science, we hypothesized that easy-to-read web links that facilitate participants' ability to identify the health organization as the website host would improve trust in and user engagement with digital communications. METHODS: In 3 double-blind, randomized online experiments, adult UK residents were recruited via the online platform Prolific (experiment 1: N1=569) or Qualtrics (exp

Interpersonal and noninterpersonal interactions, interpersonal motives, and the effect of frustrated motives.

A new circumplex model of interpersonal interaction emphasizes the motives that drive interpersonal behaviors and the negative affect (such as anger) that occurs when a strongly activated motive is frustrated. This study examined the model experimentally by varying conditions designed to activate and frustrate interpersonal motives. One hundred twenty-nine students engaged in text-based discussions using a computer. Three factors were varied: (a) activation of interpersonal motives--participants believed the interaction was interpersonal (with a human) or noninterpersonal (with a computer); (b

Digital vaccines for immunization equity: an approach to strengthen vaccine delivery and public trust in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Global immunization efforts still face major inequities and declining vaccine confidence, leaving millions of children in low- and middle-income countries unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to discuss "digital vaccines," including SMS reminders, mobile apps, electronic immunization registries, gamification, and virtual reality education, as practical complements to routine immunization services. RESULTS: Using an organizing framework focused on access, equity, and trust, we highlight how digital tools can reduce missed appointments, strengthen follow-

Antiretroviral Adherence Following Prison Release in a Randomized Trial of the imPACT Intervention to Maintain Suppression of HIV Viremia.

Many people living with HIV (PLWH) pass through correctional facilities each year, a large proportion of whom do not maintain viral suppression following release. We examined the effects of imPACT, an intervention designed to promote post-release viral suppression, on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. PLWH awaiting release from prisons in two southern states were randomized to imPACT (consisting of motivational interviewing, care linkage coordination, and text message medication reminders) versus standard care (SC). ART adherence, measured by unannounced monthly telephone pill counts, wa

Assessing the feasibility of mobile phones for follow-up of acutely unwell children presenting to village clinics in rural northern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Patient follow-up is a routine component of clinical practice and valuable for evaluating the effectiveness of interventions, but because of the broad dispersion of health facilities and lack of standardised medical reporting in Malawi, collecting patient outcome data can be challenging. Increasing accessibility and affordability of mobile technology in resource-poor settings may facilitate patient follow-up in the community. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential utility of mobile phones for collecting follow-up clinical data from parents or caregivers of acutel

Digital Health Intervention to Increase Health Knowledge Related to Diseases of High Public Health Concern in Iringa, Tanzania: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, health promotion and health education have been provided to communities in the global south in the form of leaflets or orally by health care workers. Digital health interventions (DHIs) such as digital health messages accessed by smartphones have the potential to reach more people at a lower cost and to contribute to strengthening of health care systems. The DHI in this study focuses on disseminating digital health education regarding 3 disease complexes of high public health concern: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and Taenia solium (neuro)cysticercosis or taeniasis, a para

Acceptability of and symptom findings from an online symptom check-in tool for COVID-19 outpatient follow-up among a predominantly healthcare worker population.

INTRODUCTION: Health systems worldwide have had to prepare for a surge in volume in both the outpatient and inpatient settings since the emergence of COVID-19. Early international healthcare experiences showed approximately 80% of patients with COVID-19 had mild disease and therfore could be managed as outpatients. However, SARS-CoV-2 can cause a biphasic illness with those affected experiencing a clinical deterioration usually seen after day 4 of illness. OBJECTIVE: We created an online tool with the primary objective of allowing for virtual disease triage among the increasing number of outp

What went wrong? A qualitative exploration of the determinants of poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and retention in care among pregnant and postpartum women in the Uganda WiseMama trial.

Pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV face several challenges to antiretroviral therapy adherence and retention in care. Our WiseMama trial in Uganda assessed the effectiveness of real-time wireless pill containers that delivered text message reminders when ART doses were missed and provided data-informed counselling for women with low levels of adherence. The trial found overall poor adherence and retention and no differences between intervention and control arms. To better understand these findings, we collected qualitative data at the conclusion of the trial. Twenty women participat

Optimisation of Baby, Me & NRT: a nicotine replacement therapy adherence intervention for pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is effective for quitting smoking, but pregnant women appear to benefit less than others. Likely reasons include poor adherence due to erroneous beliefs about NRT. We developed a theory-guided, blended interpersonal and digital NRT adherence intervention ('Baby, Me & NRT' [BMN]) for delivery alongside standard UK pregnancy smoking cessation care. Aims were to optimise BMN's acceptability and feasibility of delivery prior to efficacy evaluation. METHODS: Three sequential cohorts of pregnant daily smokers received standard care plus BMN from pre-qui

Using Cell Phones for Data Collection: Benefits, Outcomes, and Intervention Possibilities with Homeless Youth.

While many homeless youth use cell phones to stay socially connected, and maintaining positive social ties can contribute to pathways out of homelessness, little is known about how using cell phones for data collection can improve these young people's lives. We conducted baseline and follow-up interviews with 150 homeless youth as well as provided them with a cell phone for 30 days to gather daily data using short message service (SMS) surveying. This paper examines youths' opinions about study participation and how they used the cell phone. Results revealed that youth liked participating in t
