Voice quality after endoscopic laser surgery and radiotherapy for early glottic cancer: objective measurements emphasizing the Voice Handicap Index.

We analyzed the functional outcome and self-evaluation of the voice of patients with T1 glottic carcinoma treated with endoscopic laser surgery and radiotherapy. We performed an objective voice evaluation, as well as a physical, emotional and functional well being assessment of 19 patients treated with laser surgery and 18 patients treated with radiotherapy. Voice quality is affected both by surgery and radiotherapy. Voice parameters only show differences in the maximum phonation time between both treatments. Results in the Voice Handicap Index show that radiotherapy has less effect on patient

A longitudinal study of cognitive skills and communication behaviours in children with Rett syndrome.

Changes in the cognitive, communicative and interactive development of a group of six girls with Rett syndrome (three younger and three older) were documented over a 3-year period. All six maintained a profound level of intellectual performance and a preintentional level of communication in which caregivers assigned meaning to the girls' limited behaviours. However, marked individual variation was noted in both cognitive and social interaction skills. The study supported the notion of an increased perception of social interactiveness by the caregivers over time. The development of means-end be

Vision in stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity after retinal reattachment by open-sky vitrectomy.

Performing vitrectomy in stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity is controversial, partially due to limited anatomical and poor reported visual results. Fifty-five eyes of 50 patients whose retinas were reattached by open-sky vitrectomy in stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity and who were followed up for more than 12 months were analyzed retrospectively to ascertain clinical factors that may influence visual outcome. Vision was evaluated by preferential looking. Visual ability to discriminate stationary objects was obtained in 32 (58.2%) eyes, 18 (32.7%) had motion perception, and five (9.1%) had lig

The effect of specific compression settings on phoneme identification in hearing-impaired subjects.

In this study, some aspects of single-channel compression have been investigated in 15 hearing-impaired subjects and 4 normal-hearing listeners. Phoneme perception as a function of the compression-threshold level was measured for two hearing aids with input-dependent compression, differing in compression ratio and compression recovery time. Phoneme-identification scores, obtained by different hearing aids under similar conditions, did not differ significantly. However, there was a small but significant increase in identification scores for the lowest setting of the compression threshold. Some

The neural dynamics of speech perception: Dissociable networks for processing linguistic content and monitoring speaker turn-taking.

The neural circuitry for speech perception is well-characterized, yet the temporal dynamics therein are largely unknown. This timing information is critical in that spoken language almost always occurs in the context of joint speech (i.e., conversations) where effective communication requires the precise timing of speaker turn-taking-a core aspect of prosody. Here, we used event-related potentials to characterize neural activity elicited by conversation stimuli within a large, unselected adult sample (N=115). We focused on two stages of speech perception: inter-speaker gaps and speaker respons

Evaluating the long-term outcomes from cochlear implant surgery for children with single and multiple additional needs.

UNLABELLED: Cochlear implant surgery is a cornerstone in the treatment of severe to profound hearing impairment. Despite comprising a significant proportion of the deaf population, children with additional needs have only been included for cochlear implant candidacy in recent years. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term progress of children with additional needs post-implantation compared to children without additional and assess how this trend changes over time. METHODS: This is a longitudinal cohort study comparing the outcomes between children with no additional needs, children with a

Perceptions of donors and recipients regarding blood donation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the perceptions of blood donors and recipients regarding the act of donating blood. METHOD: This descriptive study with a survey design focuses on subjective and cultural aspects. Twenty donors and 20 recipients in the blood bank at the time of data collection participated in the study. Interviews were analyzed according to deductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Two themes emerged - perceptions of donors and perceptions of recipients. Both groups saw the act of donating blood as something positive, though donors associated their reports with th

Emerging adulthood and the perception of parental depression.

Few studies have examined children's perceptions of parental depression. This study was a qualitative analysis of the changes in the perception of parental depression between the ages of 17 and 19 years. Archived interview narratives of 16 respondents from a longitudinal, preventive intervention study of depression in families were analyzed. The respondents were purposefully selected to represent both genders as well as higher and lower levels of family adversity. The perceptions of parental depression were found to fall into three categories: self-oriented perspectives (resistance and negativ

When Does Safety Climate Help? A Multilevel Study of COVID-19 Risky Decision Making and Safety Performance in the Context of Business Reopening.

Businesses are gradually reopening as lockdown measures for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic are being relieved in many places across the globe. It is challenging but imperative for businesses to manage the risk of infection in the workplace and reopen safely. Drawing on risky decision-making theory and the job demands-resource model of workplace safety, we examined the influences of employees' COVID-19 risk perception on their safety performance at work. On the one hand, COVID-19 risk perception motivates employees to perform safely; on the other hand, COVID-19 risk perception

Psychological Distress and Illness Perceptions in Thyroid Cancer Survivors: Does Age Matter?

Purpose: To examine the role of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients' age in illness perceptions and psychological distress, and the potential moderating role of age in the relationship between illness perceptions and psychological distress. Methods: We used the Netherlands Cancer Registry to select all patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer between 1990 and 2008 (n = 568). Patients filled out the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. Levels of psychological distress and illness perceptions were compared between the different DTC survi

Attachment insecurity, biased perceptions of romantic partners' negative emotions, and hostile relationship behavior.

In the current research, we tested the extent to which attachment insecurity produces inaccurate and biased perceptions of intimate partners' emotions and whether more negative perceptions of partners' emotions elicit the damaging behavior often associated with attachment insecurity. Perceptions of partners' emotions as well as partners' actual emotions were assessed multiple times in couples' conflict discussions (Study 1) and daily during a 3-week period in 2 independent samples (Study 2). Using partners' reports of their own emotional experiences as the accuracy benchmark, we simultaneously

Neural substrates of perceptual integration during bistable object perception.

The way we perceive an object depends both on feedforward, bottom-up processing of its physical stimulus properties and on top-down factors such as attention, context, expectation, and task relevance. Here we compared neural activity elicited by varying perceptions of the same physical image--a bistable moving image in which perception spontaneously alternates between dissociated fragments and a single, unified object. A time-frequency analysis of EEG changes associated with the perceptual switch from object to fragment and vice versa revealed a greater decrease in alpha (8-12 Hz) accompanying

Controllability and hippocampal activation during pain expectation in fibromyalgia syndrome.

To examine the role of perceived control in pain perception, fibromyalgia patients and healthy controls participated in a reaction time experiment under different conditions of pain controllability. No significant differences between groups were found in pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings. However, during the expectation of uncontrollable pain, patients compared to controls showed higher hippocampal activation. In addition, hippocampal activity during the pain expectation period predicted activation of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), precuneus and hippocampus during pain stimulati

Parental Concerns on Short Stature: A 15-Year Follow-Up.

OBJECTIVES: To compare parental attitudes about short stature over time and determine possible factors that predict changes in attitudes. STUDY DESIGN: At baseline (1993-1994), we surveyed parents about their attitudes regarding their children's height. We compared parents of children (aged 4-15 years) referred to endocrinologists (referred, 154) with those of children with heights <10th percentile seen by pediatricians during regular visits (control, 240). At follow-up (2008-2009), 103 control and 98 referred parents completed a similar survey. We then made a logistic regression analysis to

TAS2R38 Predisposition to Bitter Taste Associated with Differential Changes in Vegetable Intake in Response to a Community-Based Dietary Intervention.

Although vegetable consumption associates with decreased risk for a variety of diseases, few Americans meet dietary recommendations for vegetable intake. TAS2R38 encodes a taste receptor that confers bitter taste sensing from chemicals found in some vegetables. Common polymorphisms in TAS2R38 lead to coding substitutions that alter receptor function and result in the loss of bitter taste perception. Our study examined whether bitter taste perception TAS2R38 diplotypes associated with vegetable consumption in participants enrolled in either an enhanced or a minimal nutrition counseling interven
