In vivo imaging in the oral cavity by endoscopic optical coherence tomography.

The common way to diagnose hard and soft tissue irregularities in the oral cavity is initially the visual inspection by an experienced dentist followed by further medical examinations, such as radiological imaging and/or histopathological investigation. For the diagnosis of oral hard and soft tissues, the detection of early transformations is mostly hampered by poor visual access, low specificity of the diagnosis techniques, and/or limited feasibility of frequent screenings. Therefore, optical noninvasive diagnosis of oral tissue is promising to improve the accuracy of oral screening. Consider

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of Combined Central Retinal Artery and Vein Occlusion.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new, noninvasive technology that enables detailed evaluation of flow in the retinal and choroidal vasculature. The authors believe this to be the first report to describe the optical coherence tomography angiography findings associated with combined central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO).

EN-FACE OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IMAGING IN A CASE OF CHOROIDAL RUPTURE.

PURPOSE: To report a case of choroidal rupture resulting due to blunt trauma using en-face optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 22-year-old man sustained a blunt trauma to his right eye. At the initial examination, four lesions with a subretinal hemorrhage were observed during a fundus examination of the macular area including the fovea, but the findings under the lesions were unclear. The authors observed the extent of the minute findings noninvasively by en-face OCT imaging from the initial examination. Six months after the trauma, the fine crescent-

Not all plaque ruptures are born equal: an optical coherence tomography study.

AIMS: Plaque rupture (PR) represents the most common substrate of coronary thrombosis, in at least 50% of cases. Chronic low grade inflammation is a common background for atherosclerosis development; however, increased plaque inflammation may predispose by itself to PR. In the last decade, studies performed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) have allowed to establish the severity of plaque inflammation by assessing macrophage infiltration (MØI). Our retrospective study aimed at assessing the role of plaque inflammation in PR among patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) using OCT. METH

Relation Between Superficial Calcifications and Plaque Rupture: An Optical Coherence Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND: There are several forms of calcium deposition, which play different roles in the stability of the coronary artery. It remains unknown whether certain calcification morphological characteristics determine rupture of lipid-rich lesions in the same plaque in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 550 patients with ACS between May 2008 and October 2014, who had undergone preintervention optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging examination. A total of 78 patients with 78 culprit lipid-rich lesions having superficial calcifications on OCT images were inclu

Optical Coherence Tomography-Based Scattering Properties of Retinal Vessels in Glaucoma Patients.

PURPOSE: Clinical trials have demonstrated that retinal blood flow deficiencies are present in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). We introduce a method for facilitating retinal vessel analysis: The intensity of the distal shadow of vessels in optical coherence tomography (OCT) caused by the scattered signal is analyzed, compared between healthy subjects and OAG patients and correlated with OCT angiography (OCT-A) flow density. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 80 patients with diagnosed OAG (mean age 63.4 ± 13.2 years) and 80 healthy age-matched control subjects for comparison, and 20

Optical Coherence Tomography in Patients with Chronic Migraine: Literature Review and Update.

Migraine is a chronic disease characterized by unilateral, pulsating, and often moderate-to-severe recurrent episodes of headache with nausea and vomiting. It affects approximately 15% of the general population, yet the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a safe and reproducible diagnostic technique that utilizes infrared wavelengths and has a sensitivity of 8-10 μm. It can be used to measure thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in some neurological disorders. Although ophthalmologists are often the first speciali

Optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of actinic keratosis-A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a real-time non-invasive imaging tool, introduced in dermatology in the late 1990s. OCT uses near-infrared light impulses to produce images which can be displayed in cross-sectional and en-face mode. The technique has been used to image skin diseases especially non-melanoma skin cancer including actinic keratosis (AK). Morphological characteristics of AK can be visualized in OCT images and can be used for diagnosis as well as disease monitoring. METHODS: A systematic review of original papers on AK and OCT was performed on 31.03.16 and 24.10.1

Familial Incomplete Punctal Canalization: Clinical and Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Features.

Incomplete punctal canalization is a form of punctal dysgenesis with membranous noncanalization and can be confused with punctal agenesis. The clinical and diagnostic features are known; however, familial incomplete punctal canalization has not been reported earlier. A family with 3 affected members is presented in this series with similar incomplete punctal canalization and nasolacrimal duct obstructions. After membranotomy and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy with bicanalicular intubation, all of them are free of epiphora at last visit.

Evaluation of Optical Coherence Tomography to Detect Elevated Intracranial Pressure in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Detecting elevated intracranial pressure in children with subacute conditions, such as craniosynostosis or tumor, may enable timely intervention and prevent neurocognitive impairment, but conventional techniques are invasive and often equivocal. Elevated intracranial pressure leads to structural changes in the peripapillary retina. Spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT) can noninvasively quantify retinal layers to a micron-level resolution. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether retinal measurements from OCT can serve as an effective surrogate for invasive intracranial pr

En face optical coherence tomography findings in a case of Alport syndrome.

Alport syndrome is a rare hereditary disease that is associated with retinal abnormalities such as dot-and-fleck retinopathy and temporal macular thinning. The main pathophysiological process of Alport syndrome is loss of the collagen network in the basement membrane. However, the alterations in each retinal layer have not been fully evaluated. In the case presented here, we evaluated the retina of a patient with Alport syndrome using en face optical coherence tomography (OCT). The findings suggested that the primary alterations occur in the internal limiting membrane and the retinal pigment e
