The pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid), located at the posterior of the nasopharynx is ideally positioned to sample antigens passing through the nasal cavity or oral cavity. Entering antigens will first contact tonsilar epithelium. To better understand the cellular organization of this important epithelial layer, pharyngeal tonsils were collected from six, 7-month-old calves and examined by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Morphometric analysis showed that the epithelium overlying lymphoid follicles (reticular epithelium) contained significantly more B-cells, CD4+, and

The rectal tonsil is a reactive proliferation of lymphoid tissue located in the rectum. The morphology of the lymphoid proliferation of the colon is usually polypoid or, less commonly, nodular. Only in exceptional cases does lymphoid proliferation of the colon present as a mass in the rectum (rectal tonsil), although this is the most common presentation in middle-aged patients. It is important to be familiar with the rectal tonsil because in cases of exuberant growth it can be difficult to distinguish it from other types of masses. We present the case of rectal tonsil in a four-year-old girl.

The structural and molecular properties of the human tonsil lymphatic microvascular system are important to understand as these features likely contribute to fluid balance, immunity, and tumor metastasis. The tonsil is a unique lymphoid organ in that it is in intimate contact with the contents of the upper aerodigestive tract and that there are no identifiable afferent lymphatics. Conventional immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated a remarkable degree of lymphatic vessel architecture within the tonsil; LYVE-1-positive lymphatic vessels were detected around each germinal center and in the m

The palatine tonsils play a key role in initiating immune responses against antigens entering the body through the mouth. They are also replication sites of some pathogens. There is no data available about the structure of the palatine tonsils of the Egyptian water buffalo. Therefore, palatine tonsils of 14 clinically healthy buffalo bulls (2-3 years old) were examined macroscopically and microscopically using light, and transmission electron microscopes. The tonsils had an elongated kidney shape with a central invagination (tonsillar fossa) containing a single macroscopic opening leading to a

The objective of the study was to ascertain the uptake of the Monospot test in St. James's hospital in Dublin over the five years 2002-2006 and to determine the percentage of Monospot tests which had a positive result. Using the HIPE, Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and Patient Access System (PAS) databases in St. James's Hospital, a cohort of 593 patients with a diagnosis of tonsillitis or infectious mononucleosis was identified. Fourteen patients met the exclusion criteria as outlined below leaving a valid pool of 579 patients. It was ascertained whether each patient had a Monospot performed…

Pharyngeal tuberculosis is rare and usually occurs in association with primary pulmonary disease. Primary tuberculosis involving the palatine tonsils and the posterior oropharyngeal wall is still a rare clinical entity. We report one such case of primary tuberculosis involving both the palatine tonsils and the posterior oropharyngeal wall in a 22 year-old male. The patient responded to anti-tubercular treatment with complete disappearance of lesion and no sign of recurrence on one year follow-up. The final diagnosis was based upon histopathological report.

BACKGROUND: Dendritic cells (DC) play the key role in directing antigen-specific immune responses and manipulating their function may be a useful tool for immunotherapy. The balance between immune stimulation and tolerance is particularly important at mucosal interfaces, where discrimination between dangerous pathogens and innocuous antigens takes place. In humans, although much is known about the responses of monocyte derived DC, relatively little is known about effect of immuno-stimulatory adjuvants on DC found in tonsil.
RESULTS: To examine this, tonsil DC were isolated and cultured with p

Several connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and polymyositis are associated with cancer. In contrast, cancer is rarely reported in patients with Behçet disease. We report a case of lymphoma during the course of Behçet disease. Etiopathogenic factors are discussed. A 46-year-old man with a 14-year history of Behçet disease was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin malignant lymphoma of the right tonsil. He met international criteria for Behçet disease, which manifested as refractory oral ulcers requiring dapsone treatment. He achieved a complete remission of the lymphoma after three ch

OBJECTIVE: Enlargement of the lingual tonsils is being increasingly recognized as a not uncommon and treatable cause of obstructive sleep apnea, particularly in patients with Down syndrome who have undergone palatine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. We have recognized an increasing number of patients who are obese and have obstructive sleep apnea with enlarged lingual tonsils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency of enlarged lingual tonsils in obese children.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Seventy-one obese children (mean body mass index = 41.6 kg/m(2)) underwent sagittal fast spin-

We present a rare case of a benign tumor of the tonsil in a 49-year-old woman. The tumor was excised in its entirety, and the patient's postoperative course was uneventful. No evidence of recurrence was detected during follow-up. Although some sporadic cases of tonsillar schwannoma have been reported, to the best of our knowledge this is only the second case of a solitary neurofibroma of the palatine tonsil to be reported in the English-language literature.

The localization of the bovine lingual tonsil is described as a prerequisite for the removal of specified risk material from the tongue meat in order to restrict the risk arising from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to public health. The major part of this tonsil can be located macroscopically by the openings of its follicular crypts at the root of tongue. This part consists of organized aggregations of lymph nodules. Additional solitary primary lymph nodules and diffuse accumulations of lymphocytes are macroscopically invisible but are bilaterally present in the area extending 2 cm cau

This report describes the distribution and nature of lymphoid tissue in the nasopharyngeal mucosa of six puppies (mean age+/-SD, 0.3+/-0.25 years) and eight adult dogs (mean age+/-SD, 8.8+/-2.67 years) without respiratory disease. A non-encapsulated area of organized mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue was observed in the caudal part of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx, distal to the openings of the auditory tubes. This structure was consistent with the pharyngeal tonsil and was microscopically more extensive in puppies than in adult dogs. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were used t

The tubal tonsil of the horse surrounds the pharyngeal opening of the eustachian tube and is lined by pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium interspersed with areas of follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) heavily infiltrated by lymphocytes but devoid of goblet and ciliated cells. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed microvillous cells and cells with features characteristic of M cells such as reduced microvilli or depressed bare surface, more numerous mitochondria, small vesicles and lysosomes, as well as vimentin filaments and epitopes specific for GS 1-B4 as previousl

Chronic rhinosinusitis is a common condition in medical practice. It is defined as inflammation of the mucosa of nose and paranasal sinuses, the fluids within these cavities, and/or the underlying bone that has been present with or without treatment for at least 12 weeks duration. In 1997, a detailed definition of the syndrome was developed by the Rhinosinusitis Task Force of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, consisting of the major and minor diagnostic criterias. To study the role of conventional radiography, nasal endoscopy and computed tomography in the early dia

OBJECTIVE: Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) has been associated with the development of gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. Although H. pylori infects up to more than half of the world's population, to date the precise modes of transmission has not been fully understood yet. Therefore a study was planned to investigate whether the tonsils and the adenoid tissue were the reservoir or the gate for the entrance of H. pylori.
METHODS: The adenotonsillectomy specimens obtained from 50 children, between two and 10 years of age were examined for H. Pylori colonization by the CLO-test method.
