UNLABELLED: Root resorption is a pathological process that may occur after surgical, mechanical, chemical or thermal insult. Generally, it can be classified as internal and external root resorption. Depending on the diagnosis, an orthograde, surgical or a combined approach is used in management of these cases.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: General dental practitioners can face difficulties in diagnosis and treatment planning for cases with root resorption. An understanding of the aetiology and pathogenesis of root resorption is critical for diagnosis, effective management and improves outcome.

Absence of periapical healing after orthograde retreatment using an apical plug with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) can require surgical intervention. A patient with a root-filled maxillary central incisor with chronic apical periodontitis and sinus tract was referred for endodontic retreatment. Excessive apical enlargement was verified, indicating an MTA apical plug placement; however, an unintentional extrusion of MTA occurred during this step. The root canal was filled with gutta-percha and sealer, and periodic recalls were scheduled. The sinus tract was observed after six months and the

OBJECTIVES: Residual bacteria at the time of root canal obturation significantly influence endodontic treatment outcomes in teeth with apical periodontitis, and confirmation of bacterial elimination from the root canal prior to obturation may improve long-term prognosis. However, the contribution of root canal bacterial culture to treatment outcomes in teeth with infected root canals is debated. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate treatment outcomes in cases in which root canal obturation was performed after confirming negative bacteriological test results.
METHODS: The medical recor

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO) is a recognized complication of odontogenic infection, arising from the close anatomical relationship between the posterior maxillary dentition and the maxillary sinus floor. Failure to identify the odontogenic etiology of sinus pathology risks misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and unnecessary surgical intervention. This case report presents the diagnostic approach and clinical management of a maxillary second molar associated with sinus mucosal thickening, emphasizing the role of advanced imaging and conservative endodontic therapy in

This study examined the root and canal morphology of mandibular anterior teeth (MA) in the Turkish sub-population using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), comparing the findings based on Vertucci's and Ahmed et al. classification systems. The CBCT images were acquired using the 3D Accuitomo CBCT device. Images that were deemed suitable for visualizing the roots, canals, and the complete pulp chamber and apex were included in the study. Vertucci and Ahmed et al. classification systems were employed to determine the root canal morphology. 500 CBCT images and 3000 teeth were analyzed. Type I (

INTRODUCTION: Direct pulp capping treatment is intended to preserve pulp vitality, to avoid or retard root canal treatment, and, in cases with an open apex, to allow continued root development. Historically, calcium hydroxide (CH) was the gold standard material, but nowadays calcium silicate materials (CSMs) are displacing CH because of their high bioactivity, biocompatibility, sealing ability, and mechanical properties. However, more randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm the appropriateness of CSMs as replacement materials for CH in direct pulp capping procedures.

AIM: To report the multidisciplinary care of an unaesthetic geminated maxillary lateral incisor tooth, which allowed its preservation in the mouth.
SUMMARY: Preoperative examination of an unsightly geminated maxillary lateral incisor (tooth 22) demonstrated two pulp chambers and open apices, with normal pulp sensitivity responses. At surgery, a periodontal mucoperiosteal flap was reflected and the distal part of the geminated tooth was removed. The exposed root canal of the preserved tooth was sealed with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). The extraction socket and osseous defect was grafted w

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical debridement plays an important role in eliminating intracanal bacteria, such as biofilm on the canal walls and bacteria in the dentinal tubules. Mechanical debridement is not recommended for root canal disinfection in revascularization/revitalization therapy. Here we report a failed revascularization/revitalization case, which could be due to inadequate root canal disinfection without mechanical removal of biofilm and bacteria in dentinal tubules.
METHODS: A 6-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to tooth #9, which was avulsed and replanted within 40 minutes. The tooth

The osseodensification (OD) technique differs from conventional milling for dental implant installation in that it preserves the prepared bone and compacts it toward the apex and lateral walls of the socket, resulting in bone compaction. By enabling autografting, bone expansion, and high implant insertion torques, OD has become an increasingly popular option. The aim of this clinical case report is to demonstrate the predictability of combining OD with guided bone and tissue regeneration (GBR/GTR) techniques for bone expansion in the maxilla with reduced thickness, while avoiding other reconst

Accessory canals and apical deltas have been extensively studied in human dentistry. Their clinical role as a difficult to clean reservoir for bacteria during endodontic treatments has been well described. Many papers describe in detail the pulp anatomy of equine dentition but little attention has been given to their apical ramifications. The goal of this paper is to describe the presence and anatomy of these accessory canals and apical deltas in healthy equine cheek teeth and discuss their possible relevance in the light of equine endodontics. To accomplish this, 15 maxillary and 19 mandibula

INTRODUCTION: MTA Fillapex (Angelus Solucoes Odontologicas, Londrina PR, Brazil) was introduced as a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-based sealer used for endodontic obturation. There is a lack of research that evaluates the ability of different solvents to soften MTA-based sealers during retreatment. This study tested the ability of 4 commonly used endodontic solvents to soften gutta-percha and MTA Fillapex to allow for the re-establishment of apical patency.
METHODS: Eighty-six extracted maxillary anterior teeth were instrumented to the working length to a size 45 (.04 taper size). Teeth w

BACKGROUND: Composite restorations are prone to hybrid structure degradation and microleakage over time, which causes destruction and discoloration of the restoration's margins, caries recurrence, postrestoration sensitivity, and pulp irritation. New fiber-reinforced restorations may reduce some of the disadvantages of conventional composite restorations. This study aimed to compare microleakage of fiber-reinforced and conventional composite restorations.
MATERIALS AND ETHODS: In this in vitro experimental study, 40 healthy extracted permanent premolars were included. The teeth were randomly

Osteoporosis is a common systemic bone disorder in the elderly, characterized by low bone mineral density and deterioration of bone structure. Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory response to the microbial infection of root canals, typically characterized by apical bone destruction surrounding the tooth's apex. This systematic review aimed to determine if osteoporosis affects the prevalence of apical periodontitis in adults. PRISMA guidelines have been followed. It included randomized clinical trials, cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control studies, and excluded non-relevant investigation

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is often perceived as a modern human disease. However, their presence is documented in many early human groups, various nonhuman primates and, increasingly, our hominin ancestors and relatives. In this study, we describe an antemortem lesion on the root of a Paranthropus robustus third molar from Drimolen, South Africa, which likely represents another example of caries in fossil hominins.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The molar, DNH 40, is dated to 2.0-1.5 Ma and displays a lesion on the mesial root surface, extending from the cementoenamel junction 3 mm down toward the ape
