Two different short fiber-reinforced resin composites for extensive MOD cavities in premolars and molars.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the influence of (1) incorporating micro- and millimeter-scale short fiber-reinforced composite (SFC) on the fracture behavior of large direct restorations made in premolars (P) and molars (M); (2) tooth size on the fracture resistance and their correlation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wide MOD cavities with missing lingual walls were prepared in premolars and molars. Four groups were designed (n = 15/group). Teeth in PFC group were restored with particulate filler resin composite (Gaenial Universal Injectable) without fiber reinforcement. Teeth in bilayered group were made o

Incidental observation of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption after seven years.

Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PIER) can be described by the presence of coronal radiolucency in a unerupted tooth. Upon eruption, the resorbed dentine might leave the occlusal layer of enamel unsupported and susceptible to fracture, potentially exposing the pulp chamber and root canals to the oral flora. With current case studies showing unfavourable endodontic and restorative consequences of PIER lesions when left untreated, this case report presents an unchanged lesion, 7 years following initial identification.

Clinical case report: treatment of permanent tooth avulsion following trauma from a dog bite.

This article reviews the treatment of a pediatric patient following head and neck trauma from a dog bite. The patient had an avulsed mandibular incisor, a fractured maxillary lateral incisor, and various facial lacerations. The avulsed tooth was replanted and secured for two weeks by using a physiologic splint. Both traumatized teeth received endodontic therapy and were returned to normal function. Trauma patients require a thorough evaluation and a multidisciplinary approach for the formation of a proper treatment plan.

Innovative Conservative Management of a Mid-root Fracture in a Maxillary Lateral Incisor: A Case Report.

A 22-year-old male patient presented with trauma-induced injury to the maxillary anterior teeth following a road traffic accident. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a middle-third horizontal root fracture with pulpal necrosis in the maxillary lateral incisor and a complicated crown fracture with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis in the maxillary central incisor. As the patient declined surgical intervention, a conservative multidisciplinary treatment approach was planned. The fractured root was repositioned and stabilized using a semi-rigid splint followed by non-surgical endodont

A case of successful treatment of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw with conservative treatment for pathological mandibular fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical therapy is effective for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. However, appropriate conservative treatment options are still important for cases in which surgery is contraindicated. We report a case of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw successfully treated conservatively for a pathological mandibular fracture. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 84-year-old female patient presented to our department with a chief complaint of inadequate healing of an extraction tooth socket. She had been taking minodronic acid hydrate for approximately five years for osteoporosis.

Three-dimensional analysis of posttreatment tooth movements despite bonded retainers: part I-upper jaw.

PURPOSE: Adverse side effects of fixed retainers in terms of unwanted tooth movements have been described for both the upper and lower jaw, but data about the extent and movement patterns for the maxilla are scarce. The purpose of the present retrospective case-control study was to analyze the amount and direction of unwanted tooth movements despite upper bonded retainers as well as to analyze possible predisposing pretreatment- and treatment-related factors. METHODS: Plaster casts of 1026 patients who completed orthodontic treatment and a subsequent retention phase of 2 years were screened f

Comparative evaluation of adaptation and fracture resistance of CAD-CAM fabricated zirconia posts in endodontically treated teeth.

Post plays a crucial role in reinforcing final restoration in endodontically treated teeth (ETT). The appropriate selection of the post system is crucial for enhancing the clinical success of the restored tooth. This study aims to evaluate the adaptation, fracture resistance, and fracture patterns of ETT restored with different post systems, specifically zirconia posts, cast metal posts (CMP), and anatomically customised fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) posts. Twenty-four human premolars were randomly allocated into four groups. The teeth were root canal treated and prepared to receive zirconi

Management of fractures through the angle of the mandible.

Fracture through the angle of the mandible is one of the most common maxillofacial injuries sustained in modern societies. Among issues related to the treatment of maxillofacial injuries, those concerning angle fractures are the most hotly debated, with the exception perhaps of those concerning the condylar process of the mandible. There are several reasons for this controversy about treatment of angle fractures, a controversy too often made up of arguments founded on emotion rather than on scientific information. This article discusses some of the controversies in the management of such fract

Epidural hematoma after minor oral trauma.

A case report was presented in which a 15-year-old boy was beaten about the head with a baseball bat. Intraoral trauma and facial lacerations were repaired. Since results of the neurological examination were within normal limits, the patient was discharged. The next day, the patient became lethargic; however, the patient's mother did not bring the patient back to the hospital until the routine postoperative visit. At that time, the patient had right hemiparesis, was unable to speak, and was clearly obtunded. A carotid angiogram disclosed a left venous epidural hematoma in the parietal area. A

Characterization of a Relatively Malignant Form of Osteopetrosis Caused by a Novel Mutation in the PLEKHM1 Gene.

Osteopetrosis (OMIM: 611497), literally "stone bone," is a group of inherited bone disorders characterized by increased skeletal mass due to defective osteoclast function. A patient who reported a history of frequent fractures, weakness and fatigue was admitted to our hospital in 2011. The patient presented with the typical features of osteopetrosis: fractures after minor trauma, early tooth loss, anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, and a generalized increase in bone mineral density (BMD). Aside from his father's complaint of excessive tooth loss, his mother, two sisters, son, and daughter were health

Update on the management of dentoalveolar trauma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dentoalveolar injuries are the most common type of facial injury and are often associated with concomitant facial fractures. These injuries may initially be seen by surgeons who do not have formal dental training. This article reviews the assessment and management of dentoalveolar fractures. RECENT FINDINGS: Semi-flexible splinting of traumatized teeth for shorter periods of time than previously suggested is associated with better long-term outcomes. The use of dental implants to replace teeth lost to trauma is a predictable restorative option. SUMMARY: Surgeons need to be

Complications with intermaxillary fixation screws in the management of fractured mandibles.

A dedicated bicortical bone screw for temporary intraoperative intermaxillary fixation (IMF) during open reduction and fixation of mandibular fractures offers many benefits to surgeons and patients. We have used this system for 2 years and confirm the benefits over traditional methods of intermaxillary fixation. However, complications can arise. One hundred and twenty-two patients with mandibular fractures had IMF screws of which five (4%) developed complications intraoperatively and postoperatively. Complications included fracture of the screws on insertion, iatrogenic damage to teeth causing

Direct anterior fixation of odontoid fractures with a hollow spreading screw system.

Direct fixation of odontoid fractures has the advantage of preserving rotation in the atlanto-axial motion segment. Early mobilisation of patients and minor intra-operative trauma increase the value of this technique. The original screw method of Nakanishi, Magerl, and Böhler, was improved by Knöringer who designed a double-threaded screw for direct fixation of dens axis fractures. He stated that double screwing is absolutely necessary in order to prevent rotation of fragments against each other. The purpose of the present study was to describe a new single screw for direct fixation of odontoi
