To align those teeth in the dental arch that cannot erupt or are displaced, they must be surgically exposed. After the traction device is attached, the tooth is again covered with the mucoperiosteal flap to protect the tissues involved. For this reason, the loss of this traction device must be absolutely avoided in order to prevent another surgical intervention. Here at the University of Ulm, we have developed and tested an optimized traction chain for that purpose. The chain is attached to the tooth with a laser-roughened pad applying the acid-etching technique. The chain links serve as fixat

BACKGROUND: The 2003 Children's Dental Health Survey is the fourth of the 10-yearly surveys of children's oral health.
AIM: To report the prevalence of three non-carious tooth conditions in children in the UK.
METHOD: A representative sample of children five, eight, 12 and 15 years of age were examined by calibrated examiners in schools across the UK. The dental examination included accidental damage to incisors, tooth surface loss (TSL) and enamel opacities (age 12 only). A postal questionnaire sought parental and child views on marks on teeth which could not be removed by brushing.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone loss can occur as a result of aggressive maneuvering due to iatrogenic trauma during teeth extraction or due to normal post-extraction socket healing. Tooth if used as a whole grafting material then successful osteoconductive remodeling can be expected because low-crystalline apatite is the main minerals in bone tissue. A study was conducted in the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery focused on the potential for osteoconduction, osteoinduction, and osteogenesis by growth factors in the tooth and related histogenesis between the tooth and bone. Radiographic ev

CONTEXT: Tooth extraction and periodontal disease are both common clinical situations associated with alveolar bone loss.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the reported results of in vivo studies investigating the effectiveness of statins to reduce alveolar bone resorption.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic electronic search of the MEDLINE-PubMed database.
RESULTS: A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. This review showed that the use of statins reduced significantly alveolar bone resorption observed during periodontal disease and after tooth extraction. Oral administration was effective using high s

Severe periapical cysts frequently result in tooth loss with concomitant severe alveolar bone destruction, precluding immediate implant placement. Autogenous tooth transplantation, which involves transplanting the patient's own tooth to the recipient site, offers a biological approach to reconstruct both the dentition and supporting bone structures. This report presents a 25-year-old female with a mobile, discolored maxillary right lateral incisor (#12) exhibiting grade 3 mobility due to a large periapical cyst (extending to #14 on cone-beam computed tomography) with root developmental arrest,…

When problems occur in multirooted teeth, such as persistent endodontic problems following endodontic treatment, problems involving fracture or furcation, extraction may be decided on. However, removal of the tooth will result in loss of occlusal units and the alveolar process. By removing the compromised root and preserving the healthy part, the tooth can remain functional, but only after restorative treatment. A correct indication or diagnosis, a properly performed endodontic, restorative and surgical treatment and proper follow-up are mandatory for a successful treatment outcome.

Of the six recognized types of tooth luxation injuries, intrusion generally carries the most guarded long-term prognosis due to the high risk of complications, including root resorption, ankylosis, marginal bone loss, and pulp canal obliteration or necrosis. The degree of traumatic intrusion and stage of root development affects the outcome and treatment planning. This report describes the clinical history, oral and radiographic examination findings, and rationale for surgical extraction in 2 dogs and 1 cat with traumatic intrusion of a maxillary canine tooth.

Soft and hard tissue recession following the removal of an anterior tooth presents a unique restorative challenge for the treatment team. The dental literature has examined postextraction tissue loss and proposed multiple solutions for this aesthetic complication. The majority of these techniques have focused on the prevention of buccolingual recession of the residual ridge, while the maintenance of the interdental papilla following extraction has received less attention. The purpose of this article is to present a clinical technique for maintaining papillary height and form following single a

Immediate implant is a placement of the implant immediately into fresh extraction socket site after tooth extraction and is considered to be a predictable and acceptable procedure. The present work is designed to evaluate the periodontal condition after immediate implant placement and the success rate of implant with autogenous versus synthetic guided bone regeneration. Twenty adult male patients with an endodontic failure, tooth fracture decayed tooth (hopeless tooth) were included in this study. Patients were divided into 2 groups: One group (I) received immediate implants augmented with aut

Complete root coverage is not always achievable, even in gingival recession with no loss of interproximal attachment and bone. The cemento-enamel junction is the most widely used referring parameter to evaluate root coverage results. The aim of the present study was to describe the most frequent diagnostic mistakes that may lead to incomplete root coverage in Miller Class I and II gingival recessions and to suggest a method to predetermine the level/line of root coverage in non-molar teeth. The line of root coverage (i.e., the level/line to which the soft tissue margin will be positioned after

BACKGROUND: Tooth enamel and dentin are the most highly mineralized tissues in the human body, and their structural stability depends on the balanced content of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and fluoride (F). Demineralization leads to the loss of these ions, weakening the tooth structure and increasing susceptibility to caries.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate elemental changes in Ca, P, and F in intact, demineralized, and remineralized teeth across the enamel, dentin-enamel junction and peripulpal dentin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 45 extracted human teeth were longitudinally sectioned t

BACKGROUND: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful disorder primarily affecting the incisor teeth of horses over 15 years of age. Clinical signs of the disease include prehension problems, halitosis and in severe cases weight loss. The disease predominately affects the reserve crown and presents as a loss of dental tissue and excessive build-up of cementum.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the radiographic scores of horses with EOTRH and age-matched controls and to increase understanding of EOTRH using microCT to compare teeth from horses with EOTRH and age-mat

This case report presents the successful management of a four-year-old male patient with pain in the lower right back tooth region. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed the necessity for extraction of tooth 85 due to persistent infection and bone resorption, necessitating space maintenance. A modified distal shoe space maintainer, incorporating horizontal loops for enhanced adjustability, was utilized postextraction. The appliance was fabricated, cemented, and monitored through follow-up visits. At the 24-month recall, the permanent mandibular first molar (tooth 46) was clinically v

A six-year-old male neutered Dachshund dog presented with generalized moderate gingivitis and calculus formation. A comprehensive oral examination performed under general anesthesia revealed infrabony pockets and horizontal bone loss associated with the left mandibular first and second molar teeth. The left mandibular second molar tooth was extracted, while the left mandibular first molar tooth was treated by staged periodontal therapy, including a modified distal wedge excision for open root planning and bone augmentation. Preoperative probing depths of 9-mm associated with the distal root of

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the orthodontic treatment outcome in patients with impacted maxillary central incisor in the mixed dentition.
METHODS: Nine patients, aged 8 to 11 years, with impacted maxillary central incisor were treated orthodontically. The cone-beam CT(CBCT) was taken before treatment, after treatment and one year out of retention to evaluate the root length, root canal wall thickness, width of the apical foramen, and degree of root bending, alveolar bone height and thickness. The crown-to-root ratio was calculated. The periodontal and endodontic conditions were evaluated. The para

A cemental tear is a pathologic condition in which a complete or incomplete separation of the cementum occurs along the root surface and is usually accompanied by a deep periodontal pocket. Past articles report that the incidence of cemental tears has usually been limited to 1 tooth per individual. We encountered a clinical case with cemental tears involving 14 teeth in 1 individual. Multiple cemental tears in 1 individual have not been previously described in the dental literature. We present the clinical and pathologic features of this rare case and suggest that the probable cause of multipl
