[Protracted hypochondriacal states of cerebral-organic genesis].

On the basis of clinico-follow up studies of 67 patients with brain disorders the author distinguishes 4 types of the development of the process: long-termed sluggish, remittent, subacute-progressive without remissions and regressive. The author stresses the age significance, additional exogenic factor when sluggish and remittent types of development are replaced by continuous types with moderate progressiveness. The remote stage in the illness development is characterized by expressed mnestic-intellectual deterioration, mental and physical insufferability, chronic and periodic mood disturbanc

[What are the characteristics of patients with bipolar disorder type I who attempt suicide?].

Suicide is a public health problem affecting majority of patients with psychiatric diseases, including bipolar disorder (BD). The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of suicide attempts (SAs) and to identify different factors associated with it in a population of patients with bipolar disorder type I (BD I). We conducted a cross-sectional and descriptive study of 150 patients. We used a fact sheet, questionnaires assessing affective temperaments, alcohol addiction and drug addiction. A comparison between suicidal (23,3%, n = 35) and non-suicidal (76,7%, n = 115) subjects enabl

What does potential for hostility measure? Gender differences in the expression of hostility.

We examined the construct validity of Potential for Hostility (PH) for healthy undergraduate males and females. In Study 1, 45 males and 76 females were rated for PH. Subjects then completed the Cook Medley Hostility Scale (Ho) and a trait negative affectivity (NA) scale. For males, PH correlated with Cynicism, a subscale of the Ho, but was unrelated to NA. However, for females, PH was unrelated to self-reported hostility and minimally related to NA. In Study 2, 52 males and 91 females again were rated for PH in addition to state NA; subjects also provided self-reported state NA and PH measure

Borderline personality disorder and comorbid addiction: epidemiology and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects 2.7% of adults. About 78% of adults with BPD also develop a substance-related disorder or addiction at some time in their lives. These persons are more impulsive and clinically less stable than BPD patients without substance dependency. They display suicidal behavior to a greater extent, drop out of treatment more often, and have shorter abstinence phases. The combination of borderline personality disorder with addiction requires a special therapeutic approach. METHOD: This review is based on a selective literature search about the tre

Antisocial Personality Disorder in Bipolar Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric disorder that worsens quality of life and functional impairment. Personality disorders (PDs), in particular Cluster B personality, have a high incidence among BD patients and is considered a poor prognostic factor. The study of this co-morbidity represents an important clinical and diagnostic challenge in psychiatry. Particularly, clinical overlap has been shown between antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and BD that could worsen the course of both disorders. We aimed to detect the frequency of ASPD in bipolar patients

"It Was Like They'd Lit a Fuse": A Mixed-Methods Investigation Into Rage.

Impulsive acts of violence are perpetrated by a small proportion of society, which anecdotal evidence suggests often occurs in a rage state. Rage has generally been conceptualized as extreme anger, but it may be qualitatively different from extreme anger. Is rage best considered as part of the anger continuum or is it a different phenomenon altogether? The present research addressed this question in a large sample of university students (N = 545) who completed qualitative and quantitative measures of rage attacks, anger, emotional dysregulation, trait aggression and displaced aggression, angry

Prodromal symptoms of a first manic episode: a qualitative study to the perspectives of patients with bipolar disorder and their caregivers'.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing bipolar disorder (BD) is challenging, and adequate treatment is of major importance to minimalize the consequences of the illness. Early recognition is one way to address this. Although in clinical research the prodromal phase of BD is gaining interest, the perspective of patients with BD and their caregivers on prodromal symptoms is still lacking. The aim of this study is to gain insights in prodromal symptoms of patients with BD and their caregivers before the onset of a first manic episode. METHODS: A qualitative research method was used to investigate prodromal symp

Pathological Parasocial Attachment Associated With Suicidal Behavior in a Patient With Schizoaffective Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Case Report.

Parasocial attachments are one-sided emotional relationships with public figures that are generally benign and may provide emotional comfort, social connection, and identity development. In vulnerable individuals, however, these attachments may become maladaptive when associated with significant emotional distress, functional impairment, or suicidal behavior. Limited literature exists regarding the role of parasocial attachments in individuals with borderline personality pathology and severe mental illness. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman with schizoaffective disorder, depressive ty

An Appraisal of Narcissistic Rage Through Path Modeling.

Pathological narcissism and borderline traits have been consistently associated with interpersonal aggression. Shame has been identified as an important trigger of aggressive behaviors in individuals with pathological personality traits, especially for narcissistic vulnerability and borderline traits. This is in line with Kohut's theory on narcissistic rage, that is, aggression, anger, and destruction that act as a protection for a grandiose self. The present study aims to investigate the interrelations between pathological narcissism, borderline traits, shame, and trait aggression, concepts t

John Hunter: early association of Type A behavior with cardiac mortality.

Free-floating (easily aroused) hostility is a cardinal symptom of the type A behavior pattern, the first psychosocial factor scientifically linked to coronary artery disease (CAD). Anger and hostility are associated with the onset and outcome of CAD, triggering of myocardial infarction, and lowering the threshold to ventricular arrhythmia, all increasing the risk of sudden cardiac death. The life of the legendary eighteenth century English surgeon John Hunter is illustrative of the type A behavior pattern. His demise and that of a contemporary surgeon provide important lessons for the manageme

"Don't worry, be happy"--may be a first line therapy in cardiovascular diseases?

Cardiovascular diseases represent the most frequent type of pathology nowadays. One can consider that their high prevalence is generated by an unhealthy living style, by the increasing prevalence of all kind of metabolic abnormalities, by smoking and other bad habits, but we must not forget the role of stress. The present paper highlights the fact that a pathophysiological link between stress, adverse affect and poor quality of sleep and cardiovascular diseases is represented by the sympathetic overdrive. As opposite, positive affect can offer a significant protection against pro-atherogenic e

Serum lipids and their relationships with hostility and angry affect and behaviors in men.

Research into the relationship between the Type A behavior pattern and coronary heart disease suggests that the anger-hostility-aggression (AHA!) syndrome is directly related to total serum cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins. The present study involved an investigation of the specific components of the AHA! syndrome related to blood lipid levels in 98 healthy men. The disposition to experience and express anger when frustrated, criticized, or treated unfairly (angry reaction, a component of trait anger) was related to total serum cholesterol and to low-density lipoprotein levels. Age and

Sad, glad, or mad hearts? Epidemiological evidence for a causal relationship between mood disorders and coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the epidemiological evidence to determine if there is sufficient support for the hypothesis that mood disorders convey a risk factor in the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). METHOD: Based on a review of the related research on Type A behavioral pattern (TABP) and other variables such as anger and hostility and their relationship to coronary artery disease (CAD), the findings were analyzed to ascertain any clinical patterns or similarities between behaviors of Type A and those in mood disorders. Using the given epidemiological criteria for a causal relationsh

Role of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease.

Psychosomatic elements, behavior, and sympathetic overactivity are presumed to underlie many cardiovascular diseases; the most investigated conditions are borderline hypertension and type A/B behavior. Many patients with borderline hypertension show signs of hyperkinetic circulation, that is, elevated heart rate and cardiac index. This elevation is neurogenic, since it can be abolished with a combination of beta-adrenergic and parasympathetic blockade. Response to such stepwise blockade shows a larger beta-adrenergic and a lower parasympathetic change in cardiac tone, characteristic of the fun

The Nithsdale Schizophrenia Surveys. XIII. Parental rearing patterns, current symptomatology and relatives' expressed emotion.

BACKGROUND: A population of adult schizophrenic patients was assessed to discover how the patients viewed their childhood, whether their view differed from non-schizophrenic adults, and to determine any association between parental rearing practices as perceived by the patient, childhood personality as perceived by the mother, and current symptoms. Type and level of expressed emotion shown by parents towards patients was also examined. METHOD: Parental attitudes, as perceived by 50 schizophrenic patients, were assessed by the EMBU scale. Patients' premorbid personality and social adjustment w

Predicting the Intensity of Psychedelic-Induced Mystical and Challenging Experience in a Healthy Population: An Exploratory Post-Hoc Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In psychedelic therapy, mystical as well as challenging experience may influence therapeutic outcome. However, predictors of such experience have not been sufficiently established. Determining predictors of their intensity is, therefore, potentially beneficial in targeting psilocybin therapy for depression. METHODS: In a post hoc data analysis of a Phase 1, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, between-groups clinical trial, dosage, personality traits, affect, and individual data were analysed as possible clinical predictors. Eighty-nine healthy volunteers were randomise

Classification of Low and High Schizotypy Levels via Evaluation of Brain Connectivity.

Schizotypy is a latent cluster of personality traits that denote a vulnerability for schizophrenia or a type of spectrum disorder. The aim of the study is to investigate parametric effective brain connectivity features for classifying high versus low schizotypy (LS) status. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are recorded from 13 high schizotypy (HS) and 11 LS participants during an emotional auditory odd-ball task. The brain connectivity signals for machine learning are taken after the settlement of event-related potentials. A multivariate autoregressive (MVAR)-based connectivity measure is

Influence of Betrayal Trauma on Schizotypal Personality Pathology.

Schizotypal personality pathology (SZP) is a persistent and debilitating problem for a substantial number of people. Research on SZP has typically emphasized its biological and more specifically genetic origins. However, recent research has highlighted the potential influence of trauma on SZP. This research is promising, although it has thus far focused primarily on type of trauma (e.g., different types of abuse vs. neglect in childhood) rather than who perpetrated the trauma. Previous studies on both personality pathology in general and psychotic-spectrum experiences characteristic of SZP in

Exploring psychological distress among lung cancer patients through the stress system model.

Lung cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally, often leads to anxiety, fear and other psychological distress due to its poor prognosis, treatment challenges, and financial burden. Prolonged distress may progress to depression or other mental health disorders, adversely affecting patients' quality of life and treatment outcomes. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of psychological distress in lung cancer patients, offering a theoretical basis for timely clinical interventions. This cross-sectional study applied the stress system model to analyze 435 convenien

Patterns of admission in forensic units during the COVID-19 pandemic: a process analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on forensic service practice remains matter of debate. Increased rates of anxiety, depression, and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms were reported in the early phases of the pandemic among detained persons. However, longitudinal analyses in medium-security hospitals taking into account the whole pandemic period led to mitigated results. METHODS: This report examines the evolution of the type (voluntary versus involuntary) and reason of admissions, length of stay, history of outpatient care, short-term seclusion hours for aggressive behaviors, and
