Cognitive ability and dental fear and anxiety.

Dental fear and anxiety (DFA), as well as dental behavior management problems, are common in children and adolescents. Several psychological factors in the child, and parental DFA, have been studied and found to correlate to the child's DFA. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive ability and DFA in a population-based group of children with identified behavior and learning problems. In conjunction with a dental examination at 11 yr of age, 70 children were assessed with regard to DFA using the Children's Fear Survey Schedule Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS), and th

[Nursing Students' Learning and Issues in Gerontological Nursing in Online Practical Training].

The aim of this research is to clarify student learning and the issues they faced in the practice of gerontological nursing that our students completed online from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey was conducted involving 71 third-year students who completed practical training in October 2020, and their choice of answers regarding "students' online learning environment" and free text answers regarding "what they have learned through practical training" were investigated through e-Learning systems. A total of 68 valid responses were analyzed, and the following 5 categories regarding s

The effects of cigarette smoking on learning and memory performance among people living with HIV/AIDS.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of smoking (past and current) on multiple domains of cognitive functioning in a sample of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We hypothesized that among PLWHA, current smokers would demonstrate poorer cognitive functioning when compared to non-smokers, specifically in the cognitive domains of auditory-verbal learning and memory, visuospatial memory, overall cognitive efficiency, executive skills, processing speed, and working memory. Results suggest that in patients being treated for HIV infection, current smoking is negatively associated w…

Dyslexia and fluency: parafoveal and foveal influences on rapid automatized naming.

The ability to coordinate serial processing of multiple items is crucial for fluent reading but is known to be impaired in dyslexia. To investigate this impairment, we manipulated the orthographic and phonological similarity of adjacent letters online as dyslexic and nondyslexic readers named letters in a serial naming (RAN) task. Eye movements and voice onsets were recorded. Letter arrays contained target item pairs in which the second letter was orthographically or phonologically similar to the first letter when viewed either parafoveally (Experiment 1a) or foveally (Experiment 1b). Relative

Testing the double-deficit hypothesis in an adult sample.

The double-deficit hypothesis of dyslexia posits that reading deficits are more severe in individuals with weaknesses in phonological awareness and rapid naming than in individuals with deficits in only one of these reading composite skills. In this study, the hypothesis was tested in an adult sample as a model of reading achievement. Participants were parents of children referred for evaluation of reading difficulties. Approximately half of all participants reported difficulty learning to read in childhood and a small subset demonstrated ongoing weaknesses in reading. Structural equation mode

Early reading instruction for children with reading difficulties: meeting the needs of diverse learners.

Several multiple-probe-across-participants design studies were employed to evaluate the effectiveness of a supplemental tutoring intervention using Read Well (Sprick, Howard, & Fidanque, 1998-2000). In Year 1, we conducted two studies with 7 first-, second-, and third-grade children (1 girl and 6 boys), who were classified as having learning disabilities, having attention-deficit disorder, or being English language learners and were identified by their teachers as poor readers. The results of the two studies indicated that 3 of the 5 children who received Read Well instruction showed improveme

Proofreading performance by disabled adults.

The development of Optical Character Recognition and other data input technologies is providing disabled individuals access to occupations in electronic data processing. Many of these technologies require proofreading of previously captured data for prolonged periods of time. Research using other tasks requiring sustained attention has demonstrated steep performance decrements over time by many functionally impaired populations. Previous investigations have suggested that gains in proofreading performance may be achieved by increasing the error density in the material to be proofread. Thus, th

Minor whiplash head injury with major debilitation.

A group of patients suffering major debility after minor whiplash head trauma, seen in one office practice, has been retrospectively studied. Typically, acute neck and upper back aches and headache evolved into a multiple somatic, affective and cognitive dysfunction syndrome. Neuropsychological evaluations noted impairments on tests of cognitive flexibility, non-verbal reasoning, new learning/memory, psychomotor agility, and attention. However, in the subacute period, neurological examination, imaging and clinical electrophysiological studies were unable to localize, structurally or functional

Atypical brainstem representation of onset and formant structure of speech sounds in children with language-based learning problems.

This study investigated how the human auditory brainstem represents constituent elements of speech sounds differently in children with language-based learning problems (LP, n = 9) compared to normal children (NL, n = 11), especially under stress of rapid stimulation. Children were chosen for this study based on performance on measures of reading and spelling and measures of syllable discrimination. In response to the onset of the speech sound /da/, wave V-V(n) of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) had a significantly shallower slope in LP children, suggesting longer duration and/or smaller

[Follow-up of a sample of children with reading-spelling disorders in adulthood].

OBJECTIVE: Only a few studies--especially in Germany--deal with the long-term outcome for dyslexic children. The aim of our study was to assess a group of former students of a boarding school for dyslexic children (Chrisophorus School Oberurff). METHODS: 29 adults with spelling disorder were examined 20 years after they had left school. Their spelling ability was measured with the Mannheimer Spelling Test (MRT), psychiatric symptoms with the Symptom Checklist by Derogatis (SCL-90), occupational status with the Wegener "Magnitude-Prestigeskala" (Magnitude of Prestige Scale), and intelligence w

Reading, spelling, and vigilance in attention deficit and conduct disorder.

A group of 51 male children, average age 9.1 years, presenting at a child psychiatric clinic because of attention and conduct problems were investigated for reading and phonetic spelling ability, vigilance, and intellectual level. Each child was given a DSM-III diagnosis prior to being tested. The Boder Test of Reading and Spelling patterns was used to obtain scores for reading age, number of syllables read correctly in the word list at the child's reading level, and number of phonetically correct syllables spelled in the known and unknown word lists, at and just above the child's reading leve

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in a patient with a family history of huntington disease: genetic counseling challenges.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Huntington disease (HD) are generally considered to be distinct and easily differentiated neurologic conditions. However, there are case reports of the co-occurrence of ALS with HD. We present a 57-year-old male with a clinical diagnosis of sporadic ALS in the context of a family history of HD. This case adds to the limited literature regarding individuals with a family history of HD who present with features of ALS. There were several genetic counseling challenges in counseling this patient including the diagnostic consideration of two fatal conditions,

Anosmia in COVID-19 could be associated with long-term deficits in the consolidation of procedural and verbal declarative memories.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Long-COVID describes the long-term effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In long-COVID patients, neuropsychological alterations are frequently reported symptoms. Research points to medial temporal lobe dysfunction and its association with anosmia in long-COVID patients. This study aims to investigate the acquisition and consolidation of declarative and procedural memory in long-COVID patients and to explore whether anosmia is related to these dissociated memory functions. METHODS: Forty-two long-COVID participants and 30 controls (C) were recruited. The s

A systematic review of statistical learning in autism spectrum disorder.

Statistical learning, the ability to detect and extract statistical regularities from the environment, has been proposed as a key mechanism underlying language, social, and cognitive development. Numerous studies have examined statistical learning abilities in autistic individuals to test the hypothesis that differences contribute to the behavioral presentation of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Findings have been inconsistent, with variations in methodology, sensory modality, and participant characteristics complicating the interpretation of results. The current study presents a systematic re

Assessment of Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairments Across Anti-Cancer Therapies in a Predominantly Breast Cancer Cohort.

Cancer survivors frequently experience cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), but the contributions of different anti-cancer therapies remain unclear. Patients with breast or gynaecological cancer were recruited before any anti-cancer treatment. Cognitive function was assessed by objective and subjective measures pre-treatment (T0), post-treatment (T1), and 1 year after T1 (T2). Objective measures include Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), Trail Making Test (TMT), Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWA), and Mnemonic Similarity Task (MST). Subjective measures include Func…
