Pupillary dilation in response to sound stimuli is well established and generally represents a startle reflex to sound. We previously reported that auditory-pupillary responses (APRs) persist with bilateral deafness, and that the pathways mediating APRs involve not only the cochlea but also otolith organs, especially the saccule. Here, we evaluated the vestibulo-autonomic responses in vestibular neuritis (VN) by assessing APRs. Twelve young healthy volunteers without a history of hearing and equilibrium problems and 10 VN patients participated. To clarify the relationship between APRs and vest

OBJECTIVE: Despite complaints of dizziness, some patients with unilateral compensated vestibular weakness show normal results on Sensory Organization Test (SOT), which is being widely used for the evaluation of vestibular function compensation. The head shake-sensory organization test (HS-SOT) has been suggested to increase the sensitivity of SOT. In HS-SOT, the patient is required to shake head under Conditions 2 and 5 of traditional SOT. However, the sensitivity of HS-SOT remains unelucidated in patients with vestibular neuritis. The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity of HS-S

The subjective visual vertical (SVV) is a useful tool to evaluate clinical manifestations of vestibular loss, but there have been normal variations of the SVV within 1 degrees -3 degrees , and over time, the absolute deviated degrees of SVV tilts decreases. We investigated SVV values in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) during eccentric rotation, the method used to assess utricular function during stimulation of one labyrinth. And we performed SVV in the resting state and during eccentric rotation to the lesion side and the healthy side of 15 patients with VN and 20 normal subjects. No di

The effects of administration of an extract of Ginkgo biloba (EGb 761) on vestibular compensation was studied in unilateral vestibular neurectomized cats. This experimental model of CNS plasticity was investigated by using behavioral tests (postural disorders compensation, locomotor balance recovery), electrophysiological (spontaneous and evoked neck muscle activity) and neurophysiological (spontaneous firing rate recovery of deafferented vestibular cells) recordings, and immunocytochemical methods (synaptic loss and synaptic reoccupation within the deafferented vestibular nuclei). NMDA receptors play key roles in synaptic plasticity and neuronal development, and may be involved in learning, memory, and compensation following injury. A polyclonal antibody that recognizes four of seven splice variants of NMDAR1 was made using a C-terminus peptide (30 amino acid residues). NMDAR1 is the major NMDA receptor subunit, found in most or all NMDA receptor complexes. On immunoblots, this antibody labeled a single major band migrating at M(r) = 120,000. The antibody did not cross-react with extracts from transfected cells expressing other glutamate receptor subunits, nor did it la

Electrical stimulation in the midbrain central gray in urethane-anesthetized female rats increased responses of the deep back muscles lateral longissimus and medial longissimus to stimulation of the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN). During central gray stimulation, LVN stimuli led to larger muscle responses, recruitment of new motor units, and decreased latency of muscle response. Effective central gray sites are hypothesized to act through axons descending to medullary reticular formation. Results are consistent with participation of these neuronal groups in the activation of lordosis behavio

Multiple genes encoding v-ATPase subunits are associated with various forms of syndromic hearing loss. Their functions in hair cells, the key sensory cells required for hearing and balance, remain unclear. In this study, linkage analysis and exome sequencing of a large autosomal dominant family with non-syndromic deafness identify a pathogenic p.R281P variant in ATP6V1C1 that encodes the C1 subunit of the v-ATPase. Conditional knock-out (CKO) of Atp6v1c1 in mouse hair cells results in early-onset sensorineural hearing loss and vestibular malfunction. The CKO mice show synaptic defects in inner

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are benign tumors that arise from the Schwann cells (SCs) lining the vestibular nerve. VS cells survive and proliferate far from neurons and axonally derived growth factors. We have previously shown that VSs produce the glial growth factor, neuregulin-1 (NRG1), and its receptors, ErbB2 and ErbB3. In the present work, we explore the contribution of constitutive NRG1:ErbB signaling to human VS cell proliferation. We confirm that human VSs, which express markers of immature and denervated SCs, also express endogenous NRG1 and activated ErbB2. We find that a blocking a

The afferent and efferent components of the facial nerve were traced within the brain stem of Rana catesbeiana, using three different neuroanatomical techniques. Primary afferent fibers could be traced to the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve and to fasciculus solitarius as far caudally as the first or second spinal segment, using silver degeneration methods. Cobalt filling of of the entire nerve showed the same distribution of afferent fibers, as well as the filling of the cells within the mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal, indicating the origin of a proprioceptive component of the facial ne

Perception of the spatial vertical is important for maintaining and stabilizing vertical posture during body motion. The velocity storage pathway of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), which integrates vestibular, optokinetic, and proprioception in the vestibular nuclei vestibular-only (VO) neurons, has spatio-temporal properties that are defined by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of its system matrix. The yaw, pitch and roll eigenvectors are normally aligned with the spatial vertical and corresponding head axes. Misalignment of the roll eigenvector with the head axes was hypothesized to be an importa

Mucopolysaccharidosis type VII (MPS VII, Sly syndrome) is caused by dysfunction of the acid hydrolase beta-D-glucuronidase. The defect results in the accumulation of incompletely degraded glycosaminoglycans within lysosomes of a wide array of cell types. MPS VII is associated with mixed (conductive and sensorineural) hearing loss, vision defects, shortened stature, mental retardation and decreased lifespan. Whether the sensorineural component of hearing loss in MPS VII involves degeneration of cochlear sensory cells is not yet clear. The MPS VII mouse resembles its human counterpart in all maj

Global growth and development failure, premature, accelerated, pathologic aging, and neurodegeneration characterize Cockayne syndrome (CS) and the cerebro-oculo-facial-skeletal and xeroderma pigmentosum/CS syndromes which overlap CS partially in their genetic, somatic, and neuropathologic features. Mutations of CSA or CSB genes jeopardize transcription-coupled repair of damaged nuclear and mitochondrial DNA and resumption of replication and transcription. Resultant defective proteins or gene silencing eventuate in profound dwarfism and micrencephaly, cachexia, vasculopathy, and neurodegenerati

Brainstem neurons which project to the lumbar spinal level were identified in both reeler mutant mice and normal controls (Balb/c mice) by the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. In normal controls after HRP injection into the lumbar cord, retrogradely labelled neurons were observed in (1) the lateral vestibular nucleus, (2) the pontine and medullary reticular formations including the nucleus centralis caudalis pontis, nucleus gigantocellularis, nucleus paragigantocellularis, nucleus raphe magnus et pallidus, and nucleus centralis medullae oblongatae pars ventralis et dorsalis,

The mammalian visual cortex massively innervates the brainstem, a phylogenetically older structure, via cortico-fugal axonal projections. Many cortico-fugal projections target brainstem nuclei that mediate innate motor behaviours, but the function of these projections remains poorly understood. A prime example of such behaviours is the optokinetic reflex (OKR), an innate eye movement mediated by the brainstem accessory optic system, that stabilizes images on the retina as the animal moves through the environment and is thus crucial for vision. The OKR is plastic, allowing the amplitude of this

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the immediate effects of acute exposure to intense sound on spontaneous and stimulus-driven activity in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). We examined the levels of multi- and single-unit spontaneous activity before and immediately following brief exposure (2 min) to tones at levels of either 109 or 85 dB SPL. Exposure frequency was selected to either correspond to the units' best frequency (BF) or fall within the borders of its inhibitory side band. The results demonstrate that these exposure conditions caused significant alterations in spon

OBJECTIVE: Efficient and high-quality history taking is central to vestibular diagnosis, but it is often constrained by limited consultation time and variable patient understanding of questionnaires. Large language models (LLMs) can help structure interviews and support diagnosis by proposing differential diagnoses; however, evidence of their use in neurotology remains scarce. Here, we developed and evaluated an LLM-based system that automatically conducts pre-consultation interviews for dizziness symptoms.
METHODS: We developed a prototype interview application with text input and speech out
