The frequency component of shift in the centre of gravity while standing upright was investigated in 14 normal subjects and 30 patients with peripheral vestibular disease. Relative changes in the square root value of the power in each small frequency band of 0.1 and 0.2 Hz in frequencies of less than 2 Hz were evaluated statistically for four groups, viz. a group of normal subjects, and patients with Ménière's disease, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and vestibular neuritis. The influence of visual control in each group and the difference between each pathological group and the normal su

Hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo have long been associated with Paget's disease of the bone. We reviewed the records of 463 patients with Paget's disease who were seen in the otolaryngology department. Hearing loss was common. It was our observation that mixed hearing losses were part of the disease process. Sensorineural hearing loss was the most frequent loss, but it usually was not part of the disease process. Tinnitus, vertigo, or both were seen in about 20% of these patients.

HYPOTHESIS: Afferents innervating the superior semicircular canal are rendered especially sensitive to acoustic stimulation when there is a dehiscence of the superior canal. Other vestibular end organs are also more sensitive to acoustic stimulation.
BACKGROUND: Dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal is associated with vertigo and nystagmus caused by loud sounds (Tullio phenomenon) or changes in middle ear or intracranial pressures. The mechanisms by which acoustic stimuli act on the vestibular end organs are unclear. The nystagmus caused by acoustic stimuli generally aligns with the a

Over the past two decades, there has been increasing interest in the diagnosis and management of schwannomas of the inner ear including hearing rehabilitation with cochlear implants. However, tumor nomenclature and classification within the literature have been variable and oftentimes cumbersome. The term "intralabyrinthine schwannoma" is in common use when describing these tumors but is a potential source of confusion given that people often use the term "labyrinth" or "labyrinthine" to refer to the vestibular component of the inner ear only (i.e., labyrinthectomy or the translabyrinthine app

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis affecting the small- and medium-sized arteries that may present with hearing impairment. In rare cases, PAN may be associated with progressive labyrinthitis ossificans (LO), an otologic emergency requiring early cochlear implantation (CI) to restore hearing before the complete, irreversible cochlear ossification. We report the first case in the literature of a patient affected by PAN with bilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss and rapid LO who underwent "emergency" bilateral simultaneous CI. This case report emphasizes the importance of

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is characterized by vestibulocochlear dysfunction in addition to facial paralysis and auricular vesicles. The present study investigated the lesion site of vestibular dysfunction in a group of 10 RHS patients. Caloric testing, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials by click sound (cVEMP) and by galvanic stimulation (gVEMP) were used to assess the function of the lateral semicircular canal, saccule, and their afferents. The results of caloric testing (all 10 cases showed canal paresis) mean the existence of lesion sites in lateral semicircular canal and/or superior ves

A functional audio-vestibular investigation based on impedance metric techniques and electronystagmography was carried out in a group of patients with "classical" rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and with treated or untreated "definite" RA in various stages. Data obtained from these patients were compared with those obtained from a control group. Significant hypoacusis of the transmissive type was found in initial stages of RA while sensorineural or mixed type hypoacusis was found in later stages of RA. Significant vestibular alterations of the central type suggesting supratentorial involvement were

The dramatic symptomatology of sudden loss of vestibular function alarms the patient and the physician who is consulted in an emergency situation. The continuous vertigo is often accompanied by marked autonomic symptomatology, so that heart and cerebral diseases as well as acute intoxication are often primarily diagnosed. The differential diagnosis, clinical features, course of the disease and treatment are presented in this study of 54 patients treated in our department between 1980 and 1985. Aetiology and pathogenesis are discussed on the basis of the literature.

Optokinetic nystagmus was recorded and measured in 101 subjects comprising six diagnostic categories: 1) normal, screened for otologic disease, 2) chronic unilateral labyrinthectomy, 3) unilateral Menière's disease, 4) neurologically confirmed focal brainstem lesion, 5) brainstem-cerebellar syndrome, and 6) focal unilateral supratentorial lesion. For the OKN test, each subject looked at a translucent screen onto which a field of parallel black and white bars was back-projected. The array of bars could be projected vertically or horizontally to allow for study of nystagmus beating right and lef

In guinea pigs that had been treated with very large doses of the aminoglycoside amikacin (14 x 450 mg/kg/day, i.m.) clear, short-latency responses to various click stimuli could be recorded at the round window. When the same cochleas were examined histologically, no outer or inner hair cells could be found along the entire length of the basilar membrane, save for a very few outer hair cells remaining at the apex. The response patterns resembled that of the compound action potential, and various characteristics suggest that they were of neural origin. Vestibular function, investigated by elect

PURPOSE: Military personnel and veterans exposed to blast overpressure waves frequently report vestibular symptoms, including dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. Although blast exposure is known to disrupt vestibular function, how vestibular deficits develop over time, particularly at the level of vestibular afferent signaling, remains unclear.
METHODS: In this study, we used an ear-blast model to investigate the early injury responses and progression of vestibular deficits following a single, moderate-intensity blast exposure (20 PSI) in male and female Long-Evans rats. Vestibular function wa

The integration of vestibular and visual signals is essential for spatial orientation, self-motion perception, and postural stability. However, sensory conflicts and environmental changes demand adaptive neural mechanisms to maintain perceptual reliability. Cross-modal plasticity provides a key mechanism for this adaptation by dynamically recalibrating sensory representations in response to discordant or altered inputs. In this review, we summarize the cortical pathways underlying vestibular and visual processing, discuss how multisensory integration and segregation are implemented through dis

The motion of objects and ourselves along the vertical is affected by gravitational acceleration. However, the visual system is poorly sensitive to accelerations, and the otolith organs do not disassociate gravitational and inertial accelerations. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the brain estimates the duration of vertical visual motion and self-motion by means of an internal model of gravity predicting that downward motions are accelerated and upward motions are decelerated by gravity. In visual sessions, a target moved up or down while participants remained stationary. In vestibular sess

Mastoid vibration (MV) is a non-invasive way to induce vestibular illusions. However, the influence of MV on gait kinetics during different visual conditions has not been well-established. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of different types of MV (bilateral vs unilateral) on vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during walking under both vision-available (VA) and vision-deprived (VD) conditions. Twenty healthy adults walked at their preferred speed on a pressure-sensor treadmill and vGRF characteristics (peak forces, impulses, loading/unloading rates, and variability) wer

Peripheral vestibular activation results in multi-level responses, from brainstem-mediated reflexes (e.g. vestibular ocular reflex - VOR) to perception of self-motion. While VOR responses indicate preserved vestibular peripheral and brainstem functioning, there are no automated measures of vestibular perception of self-motion - important since some patients with brain disconnection syndromes manifest a vestibular agnosia (intact VOR but impaired self-motion perception). Electroencephalography ('EEG') - may provide a surrogate marker of vestibular perception of self-motion. A related objective
