PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of vibrational angioplasty in chronic infrapopliteal arterial occlusions.
METHODS: Twelve patients (9 men, aged 54 to 90 years) with 13 below-knee arterial chronic total occlusions were treated percutaneously using vibrational angioplasty. The occlusions were located in the anterior tibial artery (n=5), the tibioperoneal trunk (n=4), the peroneal artery (n=1), the posterior tibial artery (n=1), and in both the tibioperoneal trunk and peroneal artery (n=2). Coherent two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy is performed using doubly vibrationally enhanced four-wave mixing in dilute solutions of carbon disulfide using an ultrafast (< or = 1 ps) laser pulse system. The nonresonant electronic background and singly resonant coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering contributions are suppressed by delaying the excitation pulses. With this suppression, we measured detection limits of 8 x 10(-5) M CS2 in bromochloromethane.

The paper presents data on the impact of vibration (32 Hz) on spontaneous mutagenesis in mammals. Higher counts of micronuclei were found in the bone marrow polychromophilic red blood cells in rats on day 5 of exposure to vibration, there was a reduction in their counts by day 20 and their recovery by day 30, and their steady-state decrease within 30 days after vibration discontinuation. The involvement of emotional stress in the mechanism of antimutagenic action of vibration is considered.

Workers with symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were evaluated by vibrometry to measure decreased digital vibratory perception and by questionnaire with comparison to a control group. Those workers with CTS confirmed by electromyography or surgery had significantly lower levels on vibrometry testing (P less than .001), and those with symptoms only also showed significantly lower vibrometry values (P less than .01 to .001). This study was designed to compare information on laryngeal vibrations obtained by high-speed filming, photoglottography (PGG), and electroglottography (ECG). Simultaneous glottographic signals and high-speed films were obtained from two subjects producing steady phonation.
