Buspirone for the treatment of dementia with behavioral disturbance.

Behavioral disturbances are common but serious symptoms in patients with dementia. Currently, there are no FDA approved drugs for this purpose. There have been case reports and small case series of the use of buspirone. In this retrospective study, we review 179 patients prescribed buspirone for treatment of behavioral disturbance in dementia to better characterize the efficacy and potential side effects. All patients prescribed buspirone for behavioral disturbance due to dementia from a geropsychiatric outreach program were reviewed. Data was collected and analyzed using SPSS. One hundred-sev

Using organizational collaboration and community partnerships to transition families from homelessness to home ownership: the HomeBuy5 program.

For more than a decade, the HomeBuy5 Program has successfully helped families who were homeless find an apartment, while working with them to develop a plan to move from homelessness to homeownership. This article provides an historical overview of how the program developed and evolved, a detailed discussion of the program's process and structure, the role of organizational collaboration and community partners, and demographic information on the families that have been served. It is argued that this program can be a prototype for other communities as they increase their efforts to eliminate ho

Predictors of involvement in the juvenile justice system among psychiatric hospitalized adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Several risk factors for juvenile justice involvement have been identified in previous research among delinquents and include mental illness, substance use, trauma and abuse, family dysfunction, poor parenting, school problems, and aggressive behavior. However, most of these predictors resulted from studies among adolescents incarcerated in the juvenile justice system. We were interested in finding out the prevalence rates of juvenile justice involvement among psychiatric inpatient adolescents and determining predictors of juvenile justice involvement in this high-risk group. The effect of an in-flight, emergency training program on crew confidence.

INTRODUCTION: Despite some progress, the air medical transport profession continues to experience widely publicized accidents that result in injuries and death to crew members and patients. An air medical crew member's experience, training and confidence may affect his or her ability to deal effectively with an in-flight emergency, and may also affect his or her behavior before and after the emergency. SETTING: A hospital-based, rural rotor- and fixed-wing program flying approximately 890 flights per year. Seventy-seven percent of these flights are interfacility. METHODS: A pretraining surve

Congenital cardiovascular malformations (CCVM) and structural chromosome abnormalities: a report of 9 cases and literature review.

Nine cases of congenital cardiovascular malformations (CCVM) with associated unbalanced structural chromosomal abnormalities were ascertained in a population-based study of heart defects, constituting 0.4% of the 2,103 cases of CCVM in the Baltimore-Washington Infant Study (BWIS). This represents a four-fold increase over the general population rate. In an effort to determine possible phenotype/karyotype correlations, the literature was searched for cases with similar karyotypic abnormalities. This comparison of 223 literature cases of karyotypic abnormalities with nine similar cases ascertain

A longitudinal study of the prevalence of voice disorders in children from a rural school division.

In a mass screening of children ages 6-10 in a rural school division, 203 children were identified as showing a voice deviation. One year later a retesting of 178 of these children showed that 39.9% still showed a voice disorder. Four years later 50 of these children were still available in the same school system; 38% of them still showed a voice disorder. Virtually none of these children were referred to the otolaryngologist for an ENT evaluation or to the speech-language pathologist for voice rehabilitation. Results indicate that, for many of these children, the voice disorders do not "clear

Tobacco product use and mental health status among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mental health conditions represent a priority population for tobacco control. This population smokes cigarettes at disproportionately higher rates than the general population, but less is known about the relationship between non-cigarette tobacco use and mental health status. METHOD: In 2013, 2370 young adults recruited from 11 colleges in North Carolina and Virginia completed an online survey on tobacco use. We compared past 6-month self-reported mental health diagnosis, past 30-day depression score, and past 7-day stress score to past 30-day cigarette, e-cigaret…

La Crosse Encephalitis: An Adult Case Series.

BACKGROUND: La Crosse viral encephalitis is well described in children, but to date, there are only 2 adult cases described in the literature. Despite the fact that pediatric infection can be life threatening and typically presents as a febrile meningoencephalitis often complicated by seizures and mental status changes, little is known about the presentation and course of adult infection. We report the largest case series of adult La Crosse encephalitis. METHODS: Inpatient data were reviewed between 2001 and 2012 to identify adults (≥18 years of age) with possible La Crosse encephalitis. Subs

Sex differences in the pathways to symptoms of alcohol use disorder: a study of opposite-sex twin pairs.

BACKGROUND: We sought to develop an empirical, broad-based developmental model for sex differences in risk for symptoms of alcohol use disorders, here called alcohol problems (APs). METHODS: We assessed 18 risk factors in 5 developmental tiers in both members of 1,377 opposite-sex dizygotic twin pairs from the Virginia population-based twin registry. Analyses were conducted by structural modeling, examining within-pair differences. RESULTS: The best-fitting model explained 73% of the variance in men and 71% in women for last year AP. Forty-nine percent of paths differed significantly across …

Acute scrotal pain in boys at a single paediatric centre with a questionnaire to assess patient awareness of the acute scrotum.

Paediatric surgeons commonly evaluate acute scrotal pain. Previous peer review articles have suggested that boys should be educated to ensure early medical assessment thereby avoiding potential testicular loss. In this study we sought to ascertain a contemporary view of educational awareness of testicular pain in boys presenting to our service. A prospective 11 month study of boys attending our unit with acute scrotal pain was undertaken. Additionally, 30 consecutive patients completed a standardised questionnaire to ascertain their educational awareness of testicular pain. A total of 84 boys

Bioterrorism-related inhalational anthrax: can extrapolated adult guidelines be applied to a pediatric population?

OBJECTIVE: Since the 2001 anthrax attacks, an extensive body of literature has evolved, but there has been a limited focus on the management of pediatric-specific issues. We looked at the symptom complexes of all pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department of our hospital during this period and examined whether their presentations would likely allow current guidelines to be used as potential screening criteria to identify children infected with anthrax. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed emergency department records of all adult and pediatric patients (up to the age of 21 year

Functional health literacy in adults in a rural community health center.

At a rural community health center, 183 adult patients were invited to participate in an unspecified study. In a closed-door session, interested invitees were told the study required taking the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (TOFHLA). After the purpose of the study was privately disclosed, 70 patients agreed to enroll (38.25 percent acceptance rate). Approximately 15 percent demonstrated literacy/numeracy deficits, scoring in the Inadequate and Marginal Functional Health Literacy ranges. Student's t-test comparison of mean scores suggested patients with literacy/numeracy deficits

Clinical illness in a wild turkey with Laminosioptes cysticola infestation of the viscera and peripheral nerves.

Laminosioptes cysticola, the fowl cyst mite, was found in peripheral nerves and thoracic and abdominal viscera of an emaciated eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) exhibiting severe torticollis, circling, loss of balance, and wing droop. Mites, sometimes accompanied by granulomatous inflammation, were abundant in brachial plexus and sciatic nerves. Mild lymphoplasmacytic perivascular cuffing was present in the cerebellum, but no direct evidence of mites or other infectious agents was found in the central nervous system. This is the first report of L. cysticola infestation in a wild turkey
