Arthroplasty of the proximal interphalangeal joint with the Tactys® modular prosthesis: Results in case of index finger and clinodactyly.

There are various surgical solutions for arthrosis of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint: arthrodesis or denervation. Clinodactyly that is major and the index fingers are traditional contraindications for PIP arthroplasty prostheses. The recurrence of clinodactyly with ligament imbalance and mechanical complications are known complications. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the objective and subjective clinical results and radiological complications of Tactys® prostheses on the PIP joint of the index fingers or with clinodactyly of more than 5° in the other fingers. Two surgeons h

Comparison of clinical outcomes between mobile- and fixed-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for medial compartment osteoarthritis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an established treatment for isolated medial compartment osteoarthritis (MCOA). The optimal choice between mobile-bearing (MB) and fixed-bearing (FB) designs remains debated, particularly in Asian populations where treatment costs and insurance policies influence surgical decisions. OBJECTIVE: To compare short-term clinical and radiographic outcomes between MB and FB UKA and to evaluate potential implications for healthcare resource allocation. METHODS: Sixty-four patients who underwent medial UKA between January 2022 and October 2024 w

Restoring Somatotopic Sensory Feedback in Lower Limb Amputees through Noninvasive Nerve Stimulation.

Patients with lower limb amputation experience ambulation disorders since they rely exclusively on visual information in addition to the tactile information they receive from stump-socket interface. The lack of sensory feedback in commercial lower limb prostheses is essential in their abandonment by patients with transtibial amputation (TTA) or transfemoral amputation (TFA). Recent studies have obtained promising results using invasive interfaces with peripheral nervous system presenting drawbacks related to surgery. This paper aims to (a) investigate the potential of transcutaneous electrical

Coexistence of Congenital Aniridia and Ptosis in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis Type I: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the NF1 gene on chromosome 17q11.2. The main ocular manifestations include Lisch nodules, optic pathway gliomas, and plexiform neurofibromas, all of which can potentially impair visual function. Despite the numerous documented ocular manifestations of NF1, congenital aniridia has never been previously reported. Aniridia is a rare congenital disorder primarily associated with mutations in the PAX6 gene, leading to iris hypoplasia, corneal pannus, cataracts, and glaucoma. PAX6-negative aniridia has been des

Long term follow-up of semi-constrained total elbow arthroplasty: a single centre retrospective analysis.

Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is an effective treatment for end-stage elbow arthritis and fractures, with semi- constrained designs demonstrating superior outcomes in stability and implant longevity. However, long-term survival and clinical performance data remain limited. This single-center retrospective study analyzed 122 patients who underwent semi-constrained TEA between 2003 and 2019. The cohort included 94 Coonrad-Morrey, 17 Nexel, and 11 Latitude prostheses. Clinical outcomes were assessed using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain and satisfaction, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder an

Comparative evaluation of three commercially available markerless depth sensors for close-range use in surgical simulation.

PURPOSE: Minimally invasive surgeries have restricted surgical ports, demanding a high skill level from the surgeon. Surgical simulation potentially reduces this steep learning curve and additionally provides quantitative feedback. Markerless depth sensors show great promise for quantification, but most such sensors are not designed for accurate reconstruction of complex anatomical forms in close-range. METHODS: This work compares three commercially available depth sensors, namely the Intel D405, D415, and the Stereolabs Zed-Mini in the range of 12-20 cm, for use in surgical simulation. Three

Microstimulation of visual cortex to restore vision.

This review argues that one reason why a functional visuo-cortical prosthetic device has not been developed to restore even minimal vision to blind individuals is because there is no animal model to guide the design and development of such a device. Over the past 8 years we have been conducting electrical microstimulation experiments on alert behaving monkeys with the aim of better understanding how electrical stimulation of the striate cortex (area V1) affects oculo- and skeleto-motor behaviors. Based on this work and upon review of the literature, we arrive at several conclusions: (1) As wit
