BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been studied largely among adults and in the context of intentional, collective experiences such as war and terrorism. Far less is known about PTSD among adolescents and resulting from massive industrial accidents. Such an accident in Toulouse, France, 10 days after the World Trade Center disaster, provided an opportunity to examine its effects among adolescents already sensitized by media coverage of the World Trade Center disaster.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the presence of symptoms consistent with PTSD (SCW-PTSD) among adolescents in Toul

Following deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan ("post-9/11"), a spectrum of respiratory conditions has been reported; however, there are few published reports of objective physiologic data or later experience of symptoms and function. To better understand the post-deployment clinical presentation, we conducted a retrospective review of pulmonary function testing in 143 veterans referred to our tertiary care clinic for post-deployment health concerns. More than 75% of our sample had normal lung volumes and spirometry on pulmonary function testing; however, an isolated reduction in lung diffusing

BACKGROUND: In 2022, gonorrhoea cases in EU/EEA countries returned to the pre-pandemic upward trend, reaching a new peak. During the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, in February 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to mass migration.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to summarize the epidemiological situation of gonorrhoea in Poland in 2022, a year characterized by dual crises.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Epidemiological surveillance case-based data on gonorrhoea for 2022, incidence rates from bulletins (years 2013-2022), and the number of patients treated in dermatology-venereology clinics from th

BACKGROUND: Public health research suggests that multiple factors contribute to the mental health sequalae of political violence, but the daily experiences and ongoing strategies of psychological survival during active warfare are not clearly understood. We analysed retrospective chronological diaries from Palestinian women in Gaza, occupied Palestinian territory, to explore their lives during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, when a series of aerial bombardments killed over 2000 Palestinians and left around 500 000 displaced from their homes.
METHODS: 20 Palestinian female teachers in Gaza

IMPORTANCE: The global refugee crisis disproportionately affects the Muslim world. Forced displacement often results in trauma-related mental health issues. Effective psychotherapy exists, but there are barriers to uptake by refugee groups as well as a lack of culturally appropriate interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the efficacy of a brief, lay-led, mosque-based intervention, Islamic Trauma Healing (ITH), adapting empirically supported cognitive behavioral principles to improve mental health and well-being.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a randomized clinical trial, 101 participant

BACKGROUND: Brief training can introduce clinicians to evidence-based psychotherapies, but ongoing supervision is often critical for successful implementation. This need is amplified in global mental health, where linguistic, cultural, and systemic barriers complicate the delivery of trauma-focused treatments such as Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Following the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine, we implemented a PE training and remote supervision initiative for Ukrainian psychiatrists and psychologists.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effec

BACKGROUND: Refugee populations, particularly Somali refugees, face disproportionately high rates of trauma-related common mental disorders (CMDs) due to prolonged exposure to war, forced displacement, and post-migration adversities. Traditional diagnostic models often conceptualize CMDs, including posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, as distinct disorders, overlooking the symptom-level interconnections that sustain psychological distress. This study employs network analysis to examine the structure of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, identifying cen

BACKGROUND: Sulfur mustard (SM) was extensively used during the Iraq-Iran War (1983-1988). The study assessed the prevalence of dermatoses in exposed survivors compared to the general population.
METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study, we visited and compared the prevalence of skin complaints and active dermatoses in 1538 SM-exposed survivors and 1425 unexposed controls. All participants underwent clinical evaluations by dermatologists across multiple centers.
RESULTS: The exposed group demonstrated a higher prevalence of chronic diseases (odds ratio [OR]: 4.57, 95% confidence interval

BACKGROUND: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a significant mental health concern in refugee populations exposed to trauma and displacement. Traditional treatments for PTSD often involve lengthy interventions. However, there's a growing interest in exploring more condensed, intensive treatments to improve outcomes and accessibility for refugees.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability, and preliminary effects of an intensive brief trauma-focused PTSD treatment (ITT) program delivered to refugees at the Swedish Red Cross Treatment Center for Persons Affected by War and

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental disorder after traumatic exposure that can have long-lasting physical and mental health consequences. In 2021, Ethiopia saw the highest number of internally displaced people (IDP) due to conflict and war with the scope of the internal displacement being very high in the study area and less attention has been given to mental health.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of PTSD among internally displaced people in camps at Debre Berhan, Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from Dec

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traumatic events in childhood is associated with the development and maintenance of various psychiatric disorders, but most frequently with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the types of traumatic events experienced and the presence and predictors of PTSD symptoms among adolescents from the general population from ten low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
METHODS: Data were simultaneously collected from 3370 trauma-exposed adolescents (mean age = 15.41 [SD = 1.65] years, range 12-18; 1465 (43.5%) males and 1905 (56.5%) fema

Vibrio spp. thrive in warm water and moderate salinity, and they are associated with aquatic invertebrates, notably crustaceans and zooplankton. At least 12 Vibrio spp. are known to cause infection in humans, and Vibrio cholerae is well documented as the etiological agent of pandemic cholera. Pathogenic non-cholera Vibrio spp., e.g., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus, cause gastroenteritis, septicemia, and other extra-intestinal infections. Incidence of vibriosis is rising globally, with evidence that anthropogenic factors, primarily emissions of carbon dioxide associated with atmo

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure therapy (PE) were widely disseminated to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). However, few Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans (Operation Enduring Freedom [OEF], Operation Iraqi Freedom [OIF], Operation New Dawn [OND]) diagnosed with PTSD have received CPT/PE and many initiate CPT/PE after substantial delay. Veterans who do not initiate CPT/PE or initiate CPT/PE after delay may have poorer treatment outcomes. This study aimed to identify predictors of CPT/PE initiation and timi

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of the conflict in Syria, many people, including children and adolescents, have fled their homes into neighboring countries. Little research exists on the psychosocial adjustment of refugee children and adolescents resettled in Lebanon and Jordan.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the prevalence and predictors of PTSD and emotion dysregulation in Syrian refugee children and adolescents who resettled in Lebanon and Jordan. It was hypothesized that a combination of pre-trauma variables (age and gender), trauma-specific variables (traumatic events and time spent i

BACKGROUND: Some countries have experienced and may continue to experience severe devastation due to wars, epidemics, earthquakes, and other natural catastrophes. When individuals are exposed to specific psychological or physical traumas, they can develop stress-related disorders, which can lead to irreversible changes in the autonomic nervous system and the development of cardiovascular disorders. When subjected to a new stress test, traumatized participants or those previously exposed to trauma may show more pronounced behavioral changes, intolerance, and greater fatigue responses than befor

BACKGROUND: The 'Boko Haram insurgency' is one of the most devastating armed conflicts that the Nigerian State has experienced in the post-civil war era. The quantum of destruction in terms of lives and property is beyond rational comprehension as it left in its trail both physical and psychological traumata. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the psychological sequelae of violent conflicts globally, with prevalence rates of up to 72% in sub-Saharan Africa.
OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence rate of PTSD as well as to examine its psychosoc

Relic munitions are a hazardous legacy of the two world wars present in coastal waters worldwide. The southwest Baltic Sea has an especially high prevalence of unexploded ordnance and dumped munition material, which represent a large potential source of toxic explosive chemicals (munition compounds, MC). In the current study, diverse biota (plankton, macroalgae, tunicate, sponge, mollusc, echinoderm, polychaete, anemone, crustacea, fish) were collected from the Kiel Bight and a munitions dumpsite at Kolberger Heide, Germany, to evaluate the potential bioaccumulation of explosives and their der

Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin disease, is frequently seen in patients with a personal or family history of asthma and allergic rhinitis. Population studies suggest an increasing prevalence of AD in children since World War II, with 10-15% of the population being affected by AD at some time during childhood. In patients with moderate to severe AD, involvement can be life-long, causing significant interference with school, work and social interactions. The term atopic dermatitis was introduced to reflect the close association between AD and respiratory allergy. During the p

BACKGROUND: The number of women in the armed forces has steadily increased across all branches, even as the overall size of the military remains stable. The population of women veterans is also expanding. The existing literature has extensively reported the impact of military environmental exposures (MEEs) on adverse physical and mental health outcomes in service members and veterans; however, most of these studies focus on the experiences of men. In response to the growing need to address women-specific health care concerns, particularly for women with MEEs, the Women's Operational Military E
