Methimazole alleviates hepatic encephalopathy in bile-duct ligated cirrhotic rats.

BACKGROUND: Acute or chronic liver damage may lead to hepatic encephalopathy. Previous studies have indicated the hemodynamic and hormonal mimicry between portal hypertension and hyperthyroidism. Furthermore, medically or surgically induced hypothyroidism has been found to be beneficial in ameliorating hyperdynamic circulation in the portal hypertensive state and in alleviating acute or chronic liver injury in rats. However, the effect of chronic thyroid hormone inhibition on chronic hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhosis remains unknown. METHODS: Liver cirrhosis was induced by bile-duct ligatio

Mucosal function of the perfused ileum in patients with and without diarrhoea and dumping after vagotomy and pyloroplasty.

Perfusion studies of the terminal ileum were performed in patients who had previously had vagotomy and pyloroplasty performed for peptic ulcer disease and who at follow-up study had either diarrhoea or dumping, or no symptoms (the control group). The aim was to elucidate possible pathophysiological factors contributing to the sequelae. Net movements of water, electrolytes, and sugars, unidirectional fluxes of sodium and chloride, and the transmural electrical potential difference (PD) were measured simultaneously with and without the influence of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDC), 1.0 mmol/l, in the

Mammalian aquaglyceroporin function in metabolism.

Aquaglyceroporins are integral membrane proteins that are permeable to glycerol as well as water. The movement of glycerol from a tissue/organ to the plasma and vice versa requires the presence of different aquaglyceroporins that can regulate the entrance or the exit of glycerol across the plasma membrane. Actually, different aquaglyceroporins have been discovered in the adipose tissue, small intestine, liver, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle, endocrine pancreas and capillary endothelium, and their differential expression could be related to obesity and the type 2 diabetes. Here we describe the

Movement ecology of diploid and triploid grass carp in a large reservoir and upstream tributaries.

Grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, is an herbivorous fish originally brought to North America from Asia in 1963 to control nuisance aquatic vegetation. Since their arrival, detrimental alterations to aquatic ecosystems have sometimes occurred in waterways where they were initially stocked and into which they have escaped. The movements of grass carp from lentic systems into tributaries required for spawning is poorly understood, and understanding environmental conditions associated with upstream migrations may aid in management of the species. We stocked 43 fertile diploid and 43 sterile trip

Altering salivary protein profile can decrease aversive oromotor responding to quinine in rats.

Bitter taste is often associated with toxins, but accepting some bitter foods, such as green vegetables, can be an important part of maintaining a healthy diet. It has previously been shown that animals exposed to quinine upregulate a set of salivary proteins (SPs), and those with upregulated SPs have increased rates of feeding on a quinine diet as well as increased brief-access licking to and higher detection thresholds for quinine. These studies suggest that SPs alter orosensory feedback; however, they rely on SPs upregulated by diet exposure and cannot control for the role of learning. Here

Topography of vibration frequency responses on the bony tympano-periotic complex of the pilot whale Globicephala macrorhynchus.

In modern Cetacea, the ear bone complex comprises the tympanic and periotic bones forming the tympano-periotic complex (TPC), differing from temporal bone complexes of other mammals in form, construction, position, and possibly function. To elucidate its functioning in sound transmission, we studied the vibration response of 32 pairs of formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-fixed TPCs of Globicephala macrorhynchus, the short-finned pilot whale (legally obtained in Taiji, Japan). A piezoelectric-crystal-based vibrator was surgically attached to a location on the cochlea near the exit of the acoustic nerv

Brain Imaging Phenotypes Associated with Polygenic Risk for Essential Tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder with a strong genetic basis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI) and T1 MRI, have been used to identify brain abnormalities of ET patients. However, the mechanisms by which genetic risk affects the brain to render individuals vulnerable to ET remain unknown. We aimed to understand how ET manifests by identifying presymptomatic brain vulnerabilities driven by ET genetic risk. We probed the vulnerability of healthy people towards ET by investigating the association of morphometry, and white and grey matt

Structural Response of the Water Dimer to an Electric Field.

In this paper, we report simulations of the water dimer under a uniform external electric field carried out within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). By gradually increasing the field intensity, we identify a structural transition characterized by an abrupt change in the orientation of the molecular dipole moments relative to the applied field. Below a critical field strength, the system remains in a conventional water dimer configuration. Above this limit, the dimer undergoes a reorientation, leading to a cis-like arrangement associated with a unilateral movement of the donor h

The three-dimensional microanatomy of the pancreatic duct system in the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata, with special reference to fine proximal passages of a high species-specificity.

We have previously shown the duct system in the rat pancreas to consist of two parts: a fine proximal (intercalated) duct and thicker distal (intralobular and interlobular) duct, with the latter part displaying morphological signs indicative of a bicarbonate-rich fluid secretion. In this study the pancreatic duct system in the Japanese monkey Macaca fuscata was observed by scanning electron microscopy after the hydrolytic exposure of cell surfaces as well as by transmission electron microscopy of ultrathin sections. Cellular expression of the water channel aquaporin 1 (AQP1) was also examined

Biology of AQP4 and anti-AQP4 antibody: therapeutic implications for NMO.

The water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is the target of the immunoglobulin G autoantibody (AQP4-IgG) in neuromyelitis optica (NMO). AQP4 is expressed in foot processes of astrocytes throughout the central nervous system, as well as in skeletal muscle and epithelial cells in kidney, lung and gastrointestinal organs. Phenotype analysis of AQP4 knockout mice indicates the involvement of AQP4 in water movement into and out of the brain, astrocyte migration, glial scar formation and neuroexcitatory phenomena. AQP4 monomers form tetramers in membranes, which further aggregate to form supramolecular as

Hydrocephalus: is impaired cerebrospinal fluid circulation only one problem involved?

Hydrocephalus is a complex disease of the brain as a whole, and imbalance between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) formation and absorption is not the sole mechanism involved in its pathophysiology. In the absence of a lymphatic system in the central nervous system, open communication between CSF and interstitial fluid (ISF) of the brain may contribute to maintaining homeostasis of the brain, keeping the microchemical environment in good balance. Membranes or cell layers separating CSF from ISF of the brain do not provide impermeability, so the CSF communicates with ISF across the ependymal layer and

Crucial role of Aquaporin-4 extended isoform in brain water Homeostasis and Amyloid-β clearance: implications for Edema and neurodegenerative diseases.

The water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is crucial for water balance in the mammalian brain. AQP4 has two main canonical isoforms, M23, which forms supramolecular structures called Orthogonal Arrays of Particles (OAP) and M1, which does not, along with two extended isoforms (M23ex and M1ex). This study examines these isoforms' roles, particularly AQP4ex, which influences water channel activity and localization at the blood-brain barrier. Using mice lacking both AQP4ex isoforms (AQP4ex-KO) and lacking both AQP4M23 isoforms (OAP-null) mice, we explored brain water dynamics under osmotic stress indu

Conditioned Lick Suppression: Assessing Contextual, Cued, and Context-cue Compound Fear Responses Independently of Locomotor Activity in Mice.

Pavlovian fear conditioning is a widely used procedure to assess learning and memory processes that has also been extensively used as a model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Freezing, the absence of movement except for respiratory-related movements, is commonly used as a measure of fear response in non-human animals. However, this measure of fear responses can be affected by a different baseline of locomotor activity between groups and/or conditions. Moreover, fear conditioning procedures are usually restricted to a single conditioned stimulus (e.g., a tone cue, the context, etc.) an

Development of Arrayed Colonic Organoids for Screening of Secretagogues Associated with Enterotoxins.

Enterotoxins increase intestinal fluid secretion through modulation of ion channels as well as activation of the enteric nervous and immune systems. Colonic organoids, also known as colonoids, are functionally and phenotypically similar to in vivo colonic epithelium and have been used to study intestinal ion transport and subsequent water flux in physiology and disease models. In conventional cultures, organoids exist as spheroids embedded within a hydrogel patty of extracellular matrix, and they form at multiple depths, impairing efficient imaging necessary to capture data from statistically

Morphological models of radiate accretive growth and the influence of hydrodynamics.

In many marine sessile organisms (for example sponges and stony corals) the skeleton is formed by an accretive growth process, where layers of material are secreted on top of each other in a surface normal deposition process. In many of these organisms the growth process exhibits a strong morphological plasticity due to differences in exposure to water movement. In general, many of these organisms tend to form thin-branching growth forms under sheltered conditions, while the growth form gradually transforms into a more compact shape when the exposure of water movement increases. In this paper,

Experimental investigation and numerical simulation of in-situ colloid mobilization, transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated soil.

Groundwater contamination has gained attention due to its association with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in agricultural regions of Sri Lanka. Beyond dissolved transport, colloid-facilitated transport (CFT) can significantly enhance the mobility of strongly sorbing heavy metals in soils and groundwater. However, few studies have systematically integrated experimental investigation and numerical modelling to evaluate in-situ colloid mobilization and CFT under environmentally relevant hydro-chemical conditions. This study investigated the transport of Cd and Pb in saturated s
