"Cell Lines" and "Syphilitics": A Critical Investigation into Medical Racism, Rhetorical Dehumanization, and Health Genres.

This essay investigates rhetorical dehumanization in the US related to systemic racism, sexism, and classism. While I revisit well-known cases of medical exploitation in the stories of Henrietta Lacks and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, I examine them through a new lens by undertaking a rhetorical analysis of medical journal articles written on them, demonstrating how the genre of scientific writing, with its emphasis on objectivity and neutrality, mitigated concerns about the suffering and mortality of Black Americans and overlooked exploitation in the name of scientific advancement. I conclude …

The incidence and nature of letter orientation errors in reading disability.

Letter orientation confusions (reversals) in the reading and writing of 10-year-old children with and without reading disability were investigated to determine whether reading disability is associated with letter orientation errors and to identify the nature of the errors. In a variety of tasks measuring letter orientation confusions in reception (reversal detection and recognition) and production (controlled writing, copying), individuals with reading disability made more orientation confusions than average readers. Orientation errors were more frequent for reversible than for nonreversible i…

[A moralist as balneologist. Felix Hemmerlis, 'Tractus de balneis naturalibus' (about 1420) and his reception in Germany].

It was about 1450 that the absence of balneological professional literature in Germany led the Swiss theologian and lawyer Felix Hemmerli to write a Latin treatise about the German hot springs. Hemmerli claimed that because of their greediness the medical experts did not write down their knowledge. In most of its parts Hemmerli's treatise is structured according to the empirical method of the Italian 14th century literature concerning baths, but the balneological text itself is embedded within a moralizing discourse. The reception of Hemmerli's treatise in Germany rejected its hostility toward

Directing self-compassion toward maladaptive self-beliefs in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inducing self-compassion has shown benefits for social anxiety. Typically, individuals focus on a past or upcoming stressful social situation generally with self-compassion writing prompts. The present research evaluated the possible benefits of focusing self-compassionate writing on maladaptive self-beliefs. METHODS: Across both Study 1 (N = 442 students) and Study 2 (N = 229 students pre-selected for high social anxiety), during a single online session (30 minutes), participants reported their endorsement of maladaptive self-beliefs and then were randomly assigned to …

Dysgraphia and Memory: Insights into the Cognitive Mechanisms, Neural Correlates, and Intervention Strategies.

Studies regarding dysgraphia, an impairment in writing, have been receiving more attention in recent research. Most studies have broadly discussed the multiple cognitive mechanisms involved in writing and its disruption leading to dysgraphia. However, little attention has been paid to the involvement of different memory systems integral to writing and its disruption in individuals with dysgraphia. Orthographic long-term memory and orthographic working memory are the two memory systems predominantly involved in the production of written expressions, and the subsequent interruption of these memo…

Sequential Prediction of Literacy Achievement for Specific Learning Disabilities Contrasting in Impaired Levels of Language in Grades 4 to 9.

Sequential regression was used to evaluate whether language-related working memory components uniquely predict reading and writing achievement beyond cognitive-linguistic translation for students in Grades 4 through 9 ( N = 103) with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in subword handwriting (dysgraphia, n = 25), word reading and spelling (dyslexia, n = 60), or oral and written language (oral and written language learning disabilities, n = 18). That is, SLDs are defined on the basis of cascading level of language impairment (subword, word, and syntax/text). A five-block regression model sequ…

[Language and behavioral difficulties at age 3 and half and reading delay in grade 2].

BACKGROUND: Early detection of specific language impairment and dyslexia in children is an important public health problem. Longitudinal studies are needed for the distinction of real impairments from simple transitory delays. METHODS: Teachers filled a 29-item questionnaire on language and behavior for 695 children aged 3.5 years. Four years later (at second grade of primary school) the same children were evaluated for reading and writing. Statistical analysis focused on the relationships between teacher's early observations and reading delay 4 years later. Associated factors were age, sex, …

The handwriting brain in middle childhood.

While the brain network supporting handwriting has previously been defined in adults, its organization in children has never been investigated. We compared the handwriting network of 23 adults and 42 children (8- to 11-year-old). Participants were instructed to write the alphabet, the days of the week, and to draw loops while being scanned. The handwriting network previously described in adults (five key regions: left dorsal premotor cortex, superior parietal lobule (SPL), fusiform and inferior frontal gyri, and right cerebellum) was also strongly activated in children. The right precentral gy…

[The turn of the screw: complex visual hallucinations in the Henry James' novel].

The turn of the screw is one of the most celebrated stories by Henry James. It is also a top writing within the so-called fantastic literature, whose narrative strength comes from the intermittent visions suffered by the main character. The vividness and dramatic content that represent the firstly unidentified human figures, that moreover recur as brief, stereotyped and fragmentary images, are constitutive of complex visual hallucinations. These characteristics, alongside acute premonitory symptoms such as emotional changes (fear, anxiety) or altered thinking (forced, "dejà vu", "jamais vu"), …

Stress-related thinking predicts the cortisol awakening response and somatic symptoms in healthy adults.

OBJECTIVE: Perseverative cognition (i.e., worry, stress-related thinking) may prolong stress-related physiological activation. However, its role within the context of the written emotional disclosure paradigm has not been examined. This study explored: (1) the effects of stress-related thinking on the cortisol awakening response and upper respiratory infection symptoms and; (2) the efficacy of two expressive writing interventions on these health outcomes. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to write about their most stressful life experience (using the Guided Disclosure Protocol; n=3…

Developmental dyslexia and creativity: A meta-analysis.

Despite difficulties in reading and writing, some research suggests that dyslexia may be related to higher levels of creativity. However, this pattern is not consistently observed. The current research sought to ascertain whether individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia exhibit higher creativity than controls through a meta-analysis. Fourteen studies that assessed the creativity of 397 individuals with clinically diagnosed dyslexia and 453 controls were reviewed. Random-effects meta-analysis revealed an overall non-significant difference in creativity scores between those with dyslexia a…

Suicide note written on the forearm using a sharp pointed object.

Suicide notes are generally written on readily available materials, such as paper, notebook, wall or mirror by means of pen, pencil, marker or chalk. They can also be communicated by telephone, text messages, internet and digital media. A case has been reported where a note was written with henna. Suicide notes written on one's body are uncommon, and notes engraved on the body with a sharp metallic object are extremely rare. We present two cases where a sharp pointed metallic object was used to write suicide notes on the body.
