Learning Transversus Abdominis Activation in Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain Using an Ultrasound-Based Wearable: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is prevalent among older adults and leads to significant functional limitations and reduced quality of life. Segmental stabilization exercises (SSEs) are commonly used to treat CLBP, but the selective activation of deep abdominal muscles during these exercises can be challenging for patients. To support muscle activation, physiotherapists use biofeedback methods such as palpation and ultrasound imaging. This randomized controlled pilot study aimed to compare the effectiveness of these two biofeedback techniques in older adults with CLBP. Meth…

Colonic motility abnormality in patients with irritable bowel syndrome exhibiting abdominal pain and diarrhea.

OBJECTIVES: Although colon dysmotility is recognized as a pathophysiological factor in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), it has not been characterized. We have investigated motility patterns in IBS patients with abdominal pain and frequent defecation or diarrhea and in healthy volunteers. METHODS: A recording catheter that had six polyvinyl tubes with infusion ports was placed in the transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon under fluoroscopy. After 2-h basal recordings, motility responses to cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) and a meal were studied for 3 h. The motility index (MI) and number

Free Innervated Gracilis Muscular Flap for Functional Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Following Desmoid Tumor Resection: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare, benign, locally aggressive myofibroblastic neoplasms. Complete resection with negative margins remains the standard treatment despite their lack of metastatic potential. As DT commonly involve the anterior abdominal wall, their excision may result in complex defects requiring advanced reconstruction. We herein present the first functional single-stage reconstruction of an abdominal wall defect with the use of a free innervated gracilis muscle flap transfer. A 29-year-old woman, presented with a palpable tumor on the left-side of her abdominal wall. She underwent

Multilocular cystic leiomyoma of the anterolateral abdominal wall: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Leiomyomas arising from the anterolateral abdominal wall are uncommon, and their pathogenesis remains unknown. We present the 15th case of such a tumor, having this unique tumor morphology, followed by a detailed discussion on disease pathogenesis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old, asymptomatic perimenopausal, multiparous Japanese woman presented with a left-sided pelvic mass. She had no history of previous surgeries or uterine leiomyomas. Although a transabdominal ultrasonogram raised suspicions of an ovarian tumor, a transvaginal ultrasonogram confirmed normal ovaries. Radiologica

Comparison between a weight compression and a magnet compression for experimental pressure ulcers in the rat. Histological studies and effects of anesthesia.

To develop an experimental model and evaluate the effects of the magnitude and duration of pressure, the rat abdominal wall (25x20 mm) was subjected to compression either by a weight or by two magnets. In the weight compression tests, a steel plate was inserted under anesthesia into the rat peritoneal cavity, and the abdominal wall was compressed in situ between the underlying steel plate and a weight placed on the abdominal wall. This method resulted in moderate changes in the subcutaneous connective tissue and muscle at 100 mmHg (13.3 kPa) for 4 h, while some muscle damage was observed at 50

Prune belly syndrome in the female subject.

The prune belly syndrome of marked abdominal muscle deficiency and associated genitourinary anomalies has been found almost exclusively in male subjects. Of the few reported cases of female patients with this entity most are questionable or incomplete forms. The light microscopic histology and electron microscopic ureteral abnormalities in male subjects have been reported previously. A female newborn with marked abdominal muscle deficiency and severe bilateral ureteropyelocaliectasis is described. Chromosomal studies showed 46 XX karyotype. Histologic examination of the ureter by light microsc

Optimization of an unpowered energy-stored exoskeleton for patients with spinal cord injury.

The paper describes a novel unpowered energy-stored exoskeleton (ES-EXO) for spinal cord injured patients in consideration of patients' char … e. With optimized energy-stored elements, the hip flexion moment decreased by 37.2%, activations in abdominal muscles decreased and low back muscles slightly increased. The results suggest that ES-EXO could provide specific walking assistance for SCI patients through adjusting energy-stored elements according to patients' characteristics.

Surgical resection of a mature teratoma on the head of a young cat.

A 4-month-old kitten was presented with a large mass over the temporal area involving the base of the left ear. Cytological evaluation of a fine-needle aspirate was not diagnostic. Computed tomography was used to determine tumor extent. Surgical resection was performed, which included parts of the orbital rim, masticatory muscles, the complete ear canal, and the pinna. Reconstruction of the ocular muscles was performed, and the skin defect was reconstructed using a single pedicle advancement flap. Despite unilateral facial paralysis, postoperative clinical function was excellent and aesthetics

The effects of biofeedback assisted breathing retraining on lung functions in patients with cystic fibrosis.

This study examines the effects of respiratory muscle feedback and breathing retraining (BRT) on lung function in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Twenty-six patients with CF were matched for age and severity of disease. Standard respiratory spirometry was performed on all subjects before and after biofeedback training. Thirteen experimental subjects underwent eight sessions of pneumographic or strain-gauge feedback from the abdominal muscles and electromyogram feedback from accessory respiratory muscles to assist in learning diaphragmatic and pursed-lips breathing maneuvers. Control subjec…

Primary Urachal Hydatid Cyst in a Child: A Case Report.

The hydatid cyst (HC) is an endemic parasitic disease worldwide. Although the HC can locate in every part of a body, it rarely occurs over the abdominal wall. A 12-year-old female patient was brought to Department of Pediatric Surgery, Firat University School of Medicine, Elazig, Turkey in 2017. She had been suffering from abdominal pain for one week. A lump was determined underneath her skin in the suprapubic region. It was swollen, tense and movable. A cystic mass filling the midline was found in the radiological bladder superior. It was an anechoic cyst causing ondulation on the muscles of

[The comparative effect of classic massage of different intensities on patients with chronic salpingo-oophoritis].

Massotherapy in different regimens has been used in 30 patients in remission of chronic salpingo-oophoritis (CSO). The massage produced positive changes in blood coagulation, immune status, regional hemodynamics of the small pelvis, bioelectric activity of the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall and lumbosacral region. A strong anesthetic and antiinflammatory effect of intensive massage in 78%, recovered reproductive function in 33% of the patients allow to recommend intensive massage as possible monotherapy of patients in remission of CSO.

[Thoraco-abdominal manifestation of diabetic neuropathy].

The differential diagnostic importance of the thoraco-abdominal manifestation of diabetic neuropathy, with special reference to the neurophysiological findings is underlined. The cases of six patients are described who suffered from severe, burning pain of varying location (area of the lower thoracic aperture, lower abdomen, scapulae, back). In all six patients pathological spontaneous activity of different location and intensity could be found bilaterally in the paravertebral muscles. Their segmental location correlated with the individual experience of pain.

[Abdominal wall skin nodules revealing xanthogranulomatous pylonephritis].

INTRODUCTION: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a chronic pyelonephritis characterized by an inflammatory granulomatous reaction that destroys the renal parenchyma. It is an uncommon entity. Diffuse inflammation has the potential to spread to nearby organs, especially the skin. OBSERVATION: A 73-year-old patient presented with a three-year history of painful and fistulized nodules on the abdominal wall. The results of abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis with extension to the skin, colon, and psoas muscle. The skin lesion

[Prune belly syndrome. Study of the effects of abdominal distension on the parietal myogenesis].

The abdominal wall of five fetuses suffering from the Prune-Belly syndrome and four others that had abdominal distension without enlargement of the bladder were studied histologically. This showed that there was no specific character to the abdominal wall defect classically described in the Prune-Belly syndrome. All the same, the results emphasize the importance of the teratogenic action of distension on the muscle growth in the abdominal wall as time goes on. This abdominal distension, if it starts early enough, lasts long and is severe can lead to changes that can progress as far as aplasia,
