Androgens and bone mineral content in patients with subtotal thyroidectomy for benign nodular disease.

To investigate the influence of thyroid surgery on the skeleton and different hormones a well characterized patient group of 24 women was selected who had undergone subtotal thyroidectomy for euthyroid benign nodular disease and remained euthyroid after the operation. Bone mineral content was determined in lumbar vertebrae, femoral neck and radius by dual and single photon absorptiometry. The serum levels of calcitonin, dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate, androstenedione, total testosterone, cortisol and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured. A control group was created of 48

Increased in vitro bone resorption by monocytes in the hyper-immunoglobulin E syndrome.

Children with the hyper-immunoglobulinemia E syndrome are prone to bone fractures. We determined bone density in six patients with hyper-IgE syndrome using photon absorptiometry. All six patients had significantly reduced bone density compared with age- and sex-matched controls. The capacity of peripheral blood monocytes to degrade 45Ca-labeled bone in vitro was studied. The mean percent 45Ca release in four hyper-IgE patients (40.8 +/- 8.6) was significantly higher (p less than 0.01) than in ten age-matched healthy control subjects (7.1 +/- 2.6), seven age-matched patients with recurrent infe

Osteoporosis and normality: how to express the bone mineral content of lumbar vertebrae.

Bone mineral content of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lumbar vertebrae (lumbar BMC) was measured in 70 normal women (aged 19-88 years) and 72 post-menopausal women (aged 58-89 years) with primary osteoporosis using dual-photon (153Gd) absorptiometry. The inter-individual variation of lumbar BMC was 26.7% in normal women. This figure could be reduced to 13.9%, if lumbar BMC was normalized to age (or years after the menopause), body height, body weight, and vertebral size according to multiple regression analysis. The reduction thus obtained of the inter-individual variation in normal post-menopausal wo

Predicting MRI-derived total brain volume from DXA-derived head composition in middle-aged and older adults: WASEDA'S Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Total brain volume (TBV) derived from brain MRI is an important marker of brain structural health in middle-aged and older adults, but MRI is resource-intensive and not always feasible in largescale or repeated assessments. We examined whether dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived head composition measures can estimate MRI-derived TBV in middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: This study included 314 participants (≥ 40 years) who underwent whole-body DXA (head ROI manually defined using a sub-region tool) and 3T brain MRI within 1 year. MRI-derived TBV was defined as the s

DXA-Derived Visceral and Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue and Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Elevated abdominal adipose tissue at time of diagnosis is associated with breast cancer mortality. We sought to understand the association between abdominal adipose tissue (subcutaneous, SAT and visceral, VAT) assessed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and breast cancer mortality in the prevention setting. METHODS: Women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative study with baseline whole-body DXA scans were included in the study (n = 9767). Causes of death were adjudicated up to 27 years of follow-up. Competing risk models were used to examine independent associations bet

DXA-Measured Visceral Adipose Tissue and Accelerated Biological Aging in Middle-Aged Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity, particularly excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT), may accelerate biological aging; however, few studies have examined this in middle-aged adults. We investigated associations between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived VAT and two biomarkers of biological aging-phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) and leukocyte telomere length (LTL)-in 4799 participants (2614 females, aged 45-69 years) from the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study. METHODS: Whole-body DXA (GE Lunar) quantified VAT mass. Phenotypic age was estimated from chronological age and nine biomarkers. I

Body Composition Attenuates the Association Between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Bone Mineral Density in Early Postmenopausal Women.

Background/Objectives: Vitamin D plays a central role in calcium and bone homeostasis; however, evidence linking serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) to bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women remains inconsistent. Because body weight and lean mass strongly influence skeletal loading and may also affect circulating 25(OH)D, we aimed to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and bone outcomes in early postmenopausal women and to determine whether body composition attenuates this relationship. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 120 women within 10 years after natural menop

Bone phenotype of patients with telomere biology disorders.

Telomere biology disorders (TBD) are a group of diseases that interfere with normal maintenance of telomeres, the ends of chromosomes that protect them from DNA damage. The most common manifestations are bone marrow failure, pulmonary and liver fibrosis. Systematic data on bone health in patients with TBD are scarce. Our aim was to elucidate the bone phenotype of these patients. The cohort comprises 36 adult patients (20 women and 16 men), with genetically confirmed TBD. Demographic, clinical and genetic characteristics, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, spine X-rays and treatment

Prevalence and predictors of bone density loss in men with low testosterone.

BACKGROUND: Low testosterone (T) is associated with several sequelae, including a high prevalence of bone density loss (BDL). AIM: We aimed to identify predictors of BDL in men with low T. METHODS: The sample included (1) men ≥50 years old, (2) with low total T levels (<300 ng/dL using LCMS on 2 early morning blood draws), (3) who had dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) within 6 months of T measurement. Men with prior T therapy were excluded. On DEXA, osteopenia was defined as a T score between -1.0 and -2.5, and osteoporosis as a T score below -2.5. Additionally, demographics and comorb

Comprehensive profiling of gut microbiota in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Osteoporosis is a multifactorial skeletal disease that predominantly affects postmenopausal women and is characterized by reduced bone mass and an increased risk of fractures. Growing evidence suggests that the gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in bone metabolism through immunological, endocrine, and metabolic pathways, forming the basis of the so-called gut-bone axis. This study aimed to characterize gut microbiota composition in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis compared with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty postmenopausal women aged 55-65 years were cla

Radius Bone Mineral Density Measurement Is Essential During Initial PHPT Workup: Results of a Retrospective Study on 400 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, total hip, and distal 1/3 radius is recommended for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Osteoporosis at any site justifies surgery. The distal 1/3 radius is often neglected. This study evaluated the prevalence of distal 1/3 radius measurement, the proportion of osteoporosis at this site alone, and BMD changes 1 year post-parathyroidectomy in patients with PHPT. METHODS: A total of 548 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for PHPT between 2016 and 2024 in University Hospital Center of Nantes

Association of triglycerides with bone mineral density in children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Triglycerides (TGs) are the major lipids in the human body and have an impact on bone development. However, evidence on the relationship between TG and bone mineral density (BMD) in pediatric populations remains sparse. This study systematically addresses this epidemiologic knowledge gap through a rigorous analysis of nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHOD: The present study examined a total of 3818 participants from NHANES spanning the years 2011 to 2018. The independent variable examined in this study was TG leve

Trabecular Bone Score in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trabecular bone score (TBS) independently predicts diabetic bone disease. Many studies have compared TBS in those with and without diabetes, showing inconsistent results. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate TBS in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and clarify its role, considering gender and other confounders. METHODOLOGY: Relevant studies were systematically searched until October 2024 using related terms across multiple databases. RevMan Web and R software were employed to conduct statistical analyses. Meta-analyses utilized random-effects models and the

The effect of file type and DXA protocol on an image processing fracture risk prediction tool.

Osteoporosis, a common bone disease in older adults, is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and an increased risk of fractures. While fracture risk is often assessed using T-scores derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, these measures are not fully effective in identifying individuals at greatest risk. To address this, a Statistical Shape and Appearance Modeling (SSAM) tool was previously developed to analyze femur shape and BMD distribution and demonstrated superior fracture risk prediction compared to T-scores using hip DXA scans exported in JPG format. The pre

Assessing the effect of DXA scanner drift on misclassification of bone density change: The Manitoba BMD registry.

Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is widely used to assess osteoporosis and monitor BMD in untreated and treated individuals. Systematic sources of error can occur with DXA scanners, including calibration drift. Publications suggest a drift tolerance in the range 0.5 % to 1.5 %, but are not evidence- based. The current study was performed to directly determine how varying degrees of simulated DXA calibration drift would affect misclassification of BMD change in routine clinical practice. Using data from the Manitoba Bone Density Program, we acce

Barriers and solutions for global access to osteoporosis management: a Position Paper from the International Osteoporosis Foundation.

Our ability to optimally manage bone health across the lifecourse, and so minimise the risk of fractures, has advanced substantially in recent decades. Whilst fractures and osteoporosis in older age were historically viewed simply as inherent in normal ageing, they are now recognised as manifestations of age-related disease. Key to advancing the field was the development of conceptual (relating to impaired bone mass and microarchitecture with increased propensity to fracture), and subsequent World Health Organization densitometric definitions of osteoporosis, cementing the role of dual-energy

Treatment with the Bifidobacterium longum Strain DSM 32947 Increases Bone Mineral Density in Female Mice.

Previous studies have shown that the gut microbiota regulates bone mass and that certain strains of Bifidobacterium longum prevent bone loss in ovariectomized (ovx) mice. A novel strain of Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum subsp. longum DSM 32947; BL) with a broad carbohydrate degradation capacity and the ability to stimulate certain lactobacilli was recently identified. In the present study, we tested if BL improves bone health in gonadal intact and ovx female mice.Ten-week-old C57BL/6 J female mice were subjected to ovx or sham surgery. One week after surgery, mice were treated with arabinox
