Traumatic rupture of the pericardium. Case report and literature review.

Rupture of the pericardium due to blunt thoracic trauma is a rare pathology with a range of mortality between 30 and 64% according to different authors. We review 40 cases which have been reported in the literature in the last decade and report a case of our own. We have found that 82% of the patients with traumatic rupture of the pericardium were men with a mean age of 45 years. In 80% of the cases the cause was a motor vehicle accident, 17% were due to falls and only 1 case was associated with a crush. The commonest location of the tear was the left pleuropericardium (62%) followed by the di

Investigating the Effectiveness of an Enhanced Coin-Shaped Lithium Battery With Titanium Coating in Reducing Esophageal Damage From Accidental Ingestion in Living Piglets.

Background Accidental ingestion of coin-shaped lithium batteries (CSLBs) poses a serious health risk, leading to severe esophageal injuries and fatal complications. Conventional CSLBs cause rapid tissue damage due to electrochemical reactions, necessitating the development of safer battery designs. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an improved CSLB with a titanium-clad design to reduce electrochemical reactions and delay esophageal tissue damage in cases of accidental ingestion. Methods This study aimed to develop an improved CSLB using a three-layer clad structure (nickel-titanium-stai

The Chestnut and the Imperfect Crime: A Case Report of Femicide and Staged Road Accident.

Introduction: Charred bodies represents a significant challenge for forensic pathologists due to the destructive effects of fire on human remains. Although most fire-related deaths are accidental, cases of suicide and homicide are not uncommon. Case Report: We report a peculiar case of a severely burned body discovered inside a torched vehicle. Under judicial investigation, a full autopsy was performed, including macroscopic and microscopic examination of key anatomical structures: the inspection of oral cavity revealed no soot deposits; a foreign object (a chestnut) was found anterior to the

Current practices in the management of corrosive ingestion in children: A questionnaire-based survey and recommendations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Corrosive ingestion causes significant morbidity in children with no standard guidelines regarding management. This survey aimed to understand practices adopted by gastroenterologists, identify lacunae in evaluation and management and suggest a practical algorithm. METHODS: Indian gastroenterologists participated in an online survey (65 questions) on managing corrosive ingestion. When ≥ 50% of respondents agreed on a management option, it was considered as 'agreement'. RESULTS: Ninety-eight gastroenterologists (72 pediatric) who had managed a total of ~ 2600 corrosive ing

Potential for head injuries in infants from low-height falls.

OBJECT: Falls are the most common accident scenario in young children as well as the most common history provided in child abuse cases. Understanding the biomechanics of falls provides clinicians with objective data to aid in their diagnosis of accidental or inflicted trauma. The objective of this study was to determine impact forces and angular accelerations associated with low-height falls in infants. METHODS: An instrumented anthropomorphic infant surrogate was created to measure the forces and 3D angular accelerations associated with falls from low heights (0.3-0.9 m) onto a mattress, car

Accidental transmission of HCV and treatment with interferon.

Accidental transmission of contagious pathogens, especially hepatitis C virus (HCV), by needlestick or other means as an occupational hazard for medical staff is of concern. We retrospectively analysed cases of work-related accidental injury with pathogens such as hepatitis B virus (HBV), HCV, syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reported to the centres for disease control at 15 hospitals (total 5776 beds) in the Gunma prefecture, Japan, from December 1990 to August 1993 (24.7 months). There were 416 such cases (16.8 cases/month), with an incidence of 0.2-3.5 accidents per month per

Intracranial haemorrhage and child abuse.

Intracranial haemorrhage is a major cause of severe morbidity and mortality in child abuse cases in developed countries. However, similar data are not available in most developing countries. This study therefore aimed to determine the incidence of intracranial haemorrhage amongst all cases of child physical abuse, the nature of the injuries incurred, and the morbidity and mortality resulting therefrom. Among 369 cases of physical abuse seen over a 4-year period, 41 (11.4%) had intracranial haemorrhage, of whom 37 (90%) were 2 years old or less. A history of trauma was present in only eight (20

Irradiated trauma victims: the impact of ionizing radiation on surgical considerations following a nuclear mishap.

The combination of conventional traumatic injuries and radiation exposure has synergistic consequences, the full extent of which may take days to weeks to become apparent. Our understanding of such is derived from a variety of laboratory and clinical scenarios involving both therapeutic and accidental exposures. When presented with such an individual one must discern whether the victim has been bodily contaminated versus exposed to a source or both. The former will necessitate decontamination procedures which may be as simple as declothing and showering the individual. Simply removing the vict

Toxicological aspects of increased use of surface and hand disinfectants in Croatia during the COVID-19 pandemic: a preliminary report.

All COVID-19 prevention strategies include regular use of surface disinfectants and hand sanitisers. As these measures took hold in Croatia, the Croatian Poison Control Centre started receiving phone calls from the general public and healthcare workers, which prompted us to investigate whether the risk of suspected/symptomatic poisonings with disinfectants and sanitisers really increased. To that end we compared their frequency and characteristics in the first half of 2019 and 2020. Cases of exposures to disinfectants doubled in the first half of 2020 (41 vs 21 cases in 2019), and exposure to

Cerebral abscess secondary to post-esophageal dilation bacteremia: A case report with a pathophysiological association to consider.

BACKGROUND: Accidental caustic ingestion is a pediatric emergency that may result in severe esophageal injury and long-term complications, including strictures requiring repeated dilation. Cerebral abscess is a rare but potentially fatal condition in children and has only sporadically been reported following esophageal dilation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 3-year-old girl who developed an esophageal stricture following accidental ingestion of sodium hydroxide. After multiple esophageal dilations, the patient presented with electrolyte abnormalities and neurological symptoms. Ne

Accidental fatal poisoning in a child due to ingestion of Nerium oleander leaf.

Nerium oleander is an ornamental plant that belongs to the family Apocynaceae. It contains a cardiac glycoside named oleandrin, which is present in all parts of the oleander plant. Suicidal and medication-related deaths due to Nerium oleander poisoning are not uncommon. However, accidental deaths due to oleander leaf ingestion are most commonly encountered. We are reporting a case of an accidental ingestion of Nerium oleander leaf in a child by mistaking it for a guava leaf. The child presented to the casualty with vomiting, poor sensorium, hypotension, and shock. The child developed hyperkale

The Eyes Have It: How Critical are Ophthalmic Findings to the Diagnosis of Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma?

Pediatric abusive head trauma (AHT), still colloquially known as shaken baby syndrome, is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among infants. Controversy has grown surrounding this diagnosis, and the specificity of the clinical findings-subdural hemorrhage, cerebral edema, and retinal hemorrhages-has been challenged. A literature search of peer reviewed publications on PubMed pertaining to the history, clinical, and pathologic features of AHT was conducted using the terms "shaken baby syndrome," "non-accidental trauma," "abusive head trauma," "inflicted traumatic brain injury," "shaken i
