[Threefold intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring of vestibular neurectomy].

A threefold intraoperative monitoring of facial nerve, auditory nerve and vestibular nerve function was performed in 14 cases of retrosigmoidal neurectomy. The facial nerve was monitoring with a pressure transducer placed against the cheek (Opalarm system). The auditory nerve was monitored with acoustically (click) evoked early potentials and the vestibular nerve was monitored with electrically evoked vestibular potentials obtained by direct stimulation (biphasic current pulses of 0.75-mA p-p, 100 us, 20/s) of the exposed vestibular nerve in the cerebellopontine angle before, during and after

Active Middle Ear Implant Evoked Auditory Brainstem Response Intensity-Latency Characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze intensity-latency functions of intraoperative auditory evoked brainstem responses (ABRs) to stimulation by the Vibrant … stimulation. CONCLUSIONS: VSB evoked ABR wave-V intensity-latency function slopes were similar to acoustic stimulation at high stimulation levels with a shift toward longer latencies caused by audio processor signal delay. Saturation of latencies occurred for higher stimulation levels due to saturation of audio processor gain. Thus, the analysis of VSB evoked intens …

Age-related changes in auditory temporal processing in the rat.

Presbycusis, as the deterioration of hearing ability occurring with aging, can be manifested not only in a shift of hearing thresholds, but also in a deterioration of the temporal processing of acoustical signals, which may in elderly people result in degraded speech comprehension. In this study we assessed the age-related changes in the temporal processing of acoustical signals in the auditory system of pigmented rats (Long Evans strain). The temporal resolution was investigated in young adult (3-4 months) and old (30-34 months) rats by behavioral and electrophysiological methods: the rats' a

Spread of activation and interaction between channels with multi-channel optogenetic stimulation in the mouse cochlea.

For individuals with severe to profound hearing loss resulting from irreversibly damaged hair cells, cochlear implants can be used to restor … no significant difference between optical stimulation in opsin-modified deafened mice and pure tone acoustic stimulation in normal-hearing mice. During simultaneous micro-LED stimulation, there were minimal channel interactions for all micro-LED spacings tested. For neighbouring micro-LEDs/electrodes, the relative influence on threshold was 13-fold less for optical st …

Acetylcholine, theta-rhythm and activity of hippocampal neurons in the rabbit--IV. Sensory stimulation.

Modifications of responses of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli at the background of increased endogenous acetylcholine level (injection of physostigmine) and during blocking by scopolamine were analysed in the chronic alert rabbit. A significant decrease of reactivity (about 40%) of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli occurred after physostigmine injection, inducing stable theta modulation. Suppression and decrease of inhibitory responses (including initial reset phase) and of some excitatory reactions (including on-effects) were observed. However, a limited group of excitatory respon

Tympanic Pre-Operative Electrically Evoked Auditory Late Response (TympEALR) as an Alternative to Trans-Tympanic Tests Using Anesthesia in Cochlear Implant Candidacy.

Background/Objectives: Before a cochlear implant is considered, patients undergo various audiological tests to assess their suitability. One key test measures the auditory brainstem response (ABR) to acoustic stimuli. However, in some cases, even with maximum sound stimulation, no response is detected. Methods: The promontory test involves electrical stimulation near the auditory nerve, allowing patients to associate the sensation. Ideally, the electrode is placed in the middle ear after opening the eardrum. This method, along with trans-tympanic electrically evoked ABR in local anesthesia (LA

Eye gaze in live-electronic music performance: visual information and looking-listening interplay.

Gaze tracking in music performance research often pertains to acoustic instrument performance. The differences between live-electronic music performance and acoustic instrument performance warrant an investigation of how performers use gaze in live-electronic music performance. We examine the combined use of gaze tracking recordings of 18 live-electronic performances with post-performance stimulated recall interviews with the goal of gathering qualitative information about gaze and the live-electronics setup. We identify two primary functional categories of gaze: visual information and looking

On the tympanic membrane impedance of the katydid Copiphora gorgonensis (Insecta: Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae).

Katydids (bush-crickets) are endowed with tympanal ears located in their forelegs' tibiae. The tympana are backed by an air-filled tube, the acoustic trachea, which transfers the sound stimulus from a spiracular opening on the thorax to the internal side of the tympanic membranes (TM). In katydids the sound stimulus reaches both the external and internal side of the membranes, and the tympanal vibrations are then transferred to the hearing organ crista acustica (CA) that contains the fluid-immersed mechanoreceptors. Hence the tympana are principally involved in transmitting and converting airb

The neuroethology of acoustic startle and escape in flying insects.

The acoustic startle/escape response is a phylogenetically widespread behavioral act, provoked by an intense, unexpected sound. At least six orders of insects have evolved tympanate ears that serve acoustic behavior that ranges from sexual communication to predator detection. Insects that fly at night are vulnerable to predation by insectivorous bats that detect and locate their prey by using biosonar signals. Of the six orders of insects that possess tympanate hearing organs, four contain species that fly at night and, in these, hearing is sensitive to a range of ultrasonic frequencies found

Deep brain stimulation of the inferior colliculus in the rodent suppresses tinnitus.

In animal models of tinnitus pathological neuronal activity has been demonstrated. Deep brain stimulation disrupts pathological neuronal activity and might therefore be a potential treatment for patients who suffer severely from tinnitus. In this study, the effect of DBS in the inferior colliculi is investigated in an animal model of tinnitus. The external cortex of the inferior colliculus was targeted because of the key position of the inferior colliculus within the auditory network and the relation of the external cortex with the limbic system. In this study we show the effect of DBS in the

Time-course of posterior parietal and occipital cortex contribution to sound localization.

It has been suggested that both the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the extrastriate occipital cortex (OC) participate in the spatial processing of sounds. However, the precise time-course of their contribution remains unknown, which is of particular interest, considering that it could give new insights into the mechanisms underlying auditory space perception. To address this issue, we have used event-related transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to induce virtual lesions of either the right PPC or right OC at different delays in subjects performing a sound lateralization task. Our resul

Nasal airway measurements in children treated by rapid maxillary expansion.

BACKGROUND: Rapid maxillary expansion is an orthodontic procedure that is commonly used to widen the maxilla. It is generally admitted that this technique is effective to correct palate narrowing, whereas there has not been agreement on the effect of this procedure in nasal parameters. The availability of a reliable and objective technique to assess the geometry of nasal cavities, such as acoustic rhinometry, stimulated the present investigation. METHODS: Twenty-seven children, undergoing rapid maxillary expansion, were evaluated by rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry. Postero-anterior rad

Are cochlear implant patients suffering from perceptual dissonance?

Cochlear implants provide functional hearing to the majority of recipients and have gained widespread acceptance clinically, but the range of performance remains great and largely unexplained. Designs for implanted electrodes and electronics have converged, whereas novel speech processing strategies have proliferated. For each patient, the fitting audiologist must sort empirically through options that produce large but idiosyncratic differences in both objective performance and subjective preference. This review and analysis suggests that the place-pitch and rate-pitch theories on which cochle

Sound-evoked efferent effects on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat.

The influence of the crossed medial efferent system on cochlear mechanics of the mustached bat was tested by measuring delayed evoked otoacoustic emissions (DEOAEs), cochlear microphonics, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions. Contralaterally delivered sinusoids, broadband noise and bat echolocation calls were used for acoustic stimulation of the efferent system. With all four measures we found a level-dependent suppression under stimulation with both broadband noise and echolocation calls. In addition, the sharply tuned cochlear resona…

Moving time window analysis of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions.

We have developed a technique for off-line analysis of transient otoacoustic emissions. The correlation of two curves was calculated in a moving time-window of 1 ms time sections. By this method it is possible to recognize high-correlation parts, time sections with low correlation, and thus the duration of the emission can be determined. The mean absolute duration of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions in 36 normal ears was 15.1 +/- 0.69 ms (mean +/- SE). The duration was significantly shorter (9.34 +/- 0.43) in 75 ears with different grades of sensorineural hearing loss. The breakdown of

Noninvasive neurostimulation of left temporal lobe disrupts rapid talker adaptation in speech processing.

Talker adaptation improves speech processing efficiency by reducing possible mappings between talkers' speech acoustics and listeners' phonemic representations. We investigated the functional neuroanatomy of talker adaptation by applying noninvasive neurostimulation (high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation; HD-tDCS) to left superior temporal lobe while participants performed an auditory word identification task. We factorially manipulated talker variability (single vs. mixed talkers) and speech context (isolated words vs. connected speech), measuring listeners' speech processin

An incus-body driving type piezoelectric middle ear implant design and evaluation in 3D computational model and temporal bone.

A new incus-body driving type transducer relying on piezoelectric stack, with broad frequency bandwidth, is proposed for use in a middle ear … apes displacement stimulated by the transducer excitation at 10.5 V RMS was equivalent to that from acoustic stimulation at 100 dB SPL, which is an adequate stimulation to the ossicular chain. The corresponding power consumption is 0.31 mW per volt of excitation at 1 kHz, which is low enough for the transducer to be used in a middle ear implant. Besides, this transduc …

Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation for Disorders of Consciousness: A Narrative Review of Potential Mechanisms, Clinical Evidence, and Future Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of consciousness (DoC), including the vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) and the minimally conscious state (MCS), present a major clinical challenge due to limited therapeutic options. Trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) has recently emerged as a promising neuromodulatory intervention. MECHANISMS AND CURRENT EVIDENCE: The trigeminal nuclei send efferent fibers to the thalamus and the ascending reticular system, which then broadly innervate multiple brain areas via the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) through both direct and indirect pa
