Neutrophil migration from skin window abrasions was studied in 10 patients with no history of periodontitis, 10 with localised juvenile or post-juvenile periodontitis, and 10 with chronic adult periodontitis. Filters contained either saline or chlorhexidine (0.002% or 0.02%). The leading front was measured in filters placed for 30 min after cell migration had been established for 2 h. Subjects in the juvenile/post juvenile group showed a reduced range of migration distances, but were still within the normal range when compared with the other 2 groups. Chlorhexidine at 0.002% tended to increase

Papillon-Lefevre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, showing oral and dermatological manifestations in the form of aggressive periodontitis, leading to the premature loss of both primary and permanent teeth at a very young age and palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis. It was first described by two French physicians, Papillon and Lefevre in 1924. Immunologic, genetic, or possible bacterial etiologies have been thought to account for etiopathogenesis of PLS. Severe gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction occurred after the eruption of primary teeth. This condition should wa…

BACKGROUND: Different gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-8 response patterns were studied among non-smoking and smoking patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) and generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) to test the utility of GCF MMP-8 levels predicting the site-level treatment outcome.
METHODS: Data from four independent longitudinal studies were combined. Altogether, the studies included 158 periodontal sites from 67 patients with CP and 32 patients with GAgP, and GCF samples were collected at baseline, after the treatment, and during the 6-month maintenanc…

Periodontal maintenance therapy is an integral aspect of any general dental or specialist practice. Numerous studies have indicated that periodontal therapy in the absence of a carefully designed maintenance program invariably results in the relapse of the disease condition. Accordingly, dental practices that provide periodontal care without a maintenance program deal with significant patient management and disease management issues. In this article, three cases are presented with varying levels of disease severity but all sharing the common trait of having being enrolled in a good maintenance

UNLABELLED: Tuberculosis (TB), the biggest cause of death from any known infectious disease, has been a problem for the world's health system for many years. The only approved vaccine is BCG and now a number of vaccines are undergoing clinical trials. The newly recognised mRNA vaccines can provide a good alternative to the traditional vaccine. Therefore, the goal of this work is to use computational techniques to build a multi-stage tuberculosis mRNA vaccine. Nine multistage-expressing Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins that have been linked to cell entry, pathogenesis, and dormancy reg

The presence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in the deep periodontal pockets of patients with localized juvenile periodontitis has been causally associated with active periodontal destruction. Thus, eradication of this microorganism has become the goal of treatment. It has been postulated that such eradication cannot be achieved without systemic antimicrobial treatment. The efficacy of a semisynthetic tetracycline (doxycycline) in a double-blind follow-up study of 14 patients with localized juvenile periodontitis was evaluated. For assessment of the periodontal status, probing depth an

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a rare nonodontogenic tumor of the periodontal membrane that arises from the mesodermal germ layer. Clinically, these lesions are usually asymptomatic, slowly growing, and well circumscribed. However, they have demonstrated an aggressive course of development in a very small number of cases, particularly in younger patients. Surgical management via wide local excision is necessary because COF is notorious for recurrence, particularly lesions in the paranasal sinuses. We describe a case of juvenile aggressive COF of the sinonasal tract in a 12-year-old boy. Th

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumors are initially described in the lung and various extrapulmonary sites such as the orbits, palatine tonsils, ears, gingiva, pterygomaxillary space, and periodontal tissues. These tumors rarely involve the larynx and predilection to the glottis occurs in an indolent manner.
CASE REPORT: This case describes a laryngeal myofibroblastic tumor in a 46-year-old woman who presented with an aggressive tumor that extended to the floor of the mouth and the base of the tongue. Extended supraglottic laryngectomy was undertaken for the patient. The dia

AIM: The aim of this case-series study is to evaluate the prevalence of mucositis, peri-implantitis, and survival and success rates of oxide-coated implants in subjects treated for periodontitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four subjects treated for generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP) and five treated for generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) were orally rehabilitated with a total of 130 dental implants. Subjects were examined 2 to 4 weeks prior to extraction of non-retainable teeth and at insertion of superstructure. Additional examinations were performed during a 3-month recall s…

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a syndromic connective tissue disorder caused by a heterozygous missense mutation in genes that encode transforming growth factor (TGF)-β receptor (TGFBR) 1 and 2. We encountered a patient with LDS, who had severe periodontal tissue destruction indicative of aggressive periodontitis. The patient had a missense mutation in the glycine and serine-rich domain of TGFBR1 exon 3. This G-to-T mutation at base 563 converted glycine to valine. We established an LDS model knock-in mouse that recapitulated the LDS phenotype. Homozygosity of the mutation caused embryonic leth…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of paraoxonase 1 (PON1) are known to be associated with the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and periodontitis. However, the effects of PON1 on the osteoblastic differentiation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells are unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of PON1 on the osteoblastic differentiation of PDL cells, and analysed the role of PON1 SNPs on the pathogenesis of aggressive periodontitis (AgP) in the Japanese population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Human PDL (HPDL) cells were exposed to the PON1 plasmid and PON1 inhibitor, …

The aim of the present study was to characterize the eventual presence and molecular forms of gelatinase/type IV collagenase activities in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva in different forms of periodontitis; patients with clinically healthy periodontium served as controls. Enzyme activities were monitored electrophoretically by zymography using gelatin and type IV collagen as substrates and analyzed visually and/or densitometrically. Both saliva and GCF collected from adult periodontitis, localized juvenile periodontitis and type II diabetes mellitus periodontitis patients contained

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to significant destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, compromising dental function and patient's health. Although the currently employed treatment approaches can limit the advance of the disease, the development of multifunctional and hierarchically structured materials is still in demand for achieving successful tissue regeneration. Here, we combine coaxial electrospinning and 3D printing techniques to prepare bilayered zein-based membranes as a potential dual drug delivery platform for periodontal tissue regeneration. A layer of
