Childhood blindness in India: a population based perspective.

AIM: To estimate the prevalence and causes of blindness in children in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. METHODS: These data were obtained as part of two population based studies in which 6935 children <or=15 years of age participated. Blindness was defined as presenting distance visual acuity <6/60 in the better eye. RESULTS: The prevalence of childhood blindness was 0.17% (95% confidence interval 0.09 to 0.30). Treatable refractive error caused 33.3% of the blindness, followed by 16.6% due to preventable causes (8.3% each due to vitamin A deficiency and amblyopia after cataract …

Unilateral congenital oculomotor nerve palsy, optic nerve hypoplasia and pituitary malformation: a preliminary report.

A newborn male presented with complete external third nerve palsy of his right eye immediately at birth. Pediatric examination and MRI of the skull revealed no abnormalities. At the age of six weeks, strabismus surgery was performed to facilitate amblyopia treatment. The muscles appeared small and fibrotic. At the age of ten weeks, a brow suspension of the upper lid and a second strabismus surgery were performed. The amblyopia treatment and patching, applied for half of the waking hours over a period of six weeks, were unsuccessful. At the age of six months, a relative pallor of the right opti…

Strabismus in ptosis.

Two hundred twenty-six consecutive surgical ptosis cases were carefully evaluated to establish the incidence of strabismus in ptosis. The ov … (3.5%), strabismus developed as a result of their ptosis. In one of these patients, strabismus and amblyopia developed while the patient was being observed prior to ptosis surgery. This study demonstrates the need for careful ocular motility evaluation in all patients with ptosis. Ocular motility evaluation and follow-up is especially important in congenit …

Intraocular lenses in children.

The intraocular lens offers an experimental alternative to be considered for the visual rehabilitation of children with traumatic or unilateral infantile cataracts. The disadvantages of aphakic spectacles or contact lenses and amblyopia have committed many of these eyes to the status of visual cripples. In this series of 41 patients with a maximum of 24 months follow-up, it has been concluded that an IOL may be successfully implanted. I wish to reemphasize that vitreous involvement does not preclude IOL implantation providing all the vitreous is removed from the anterior chamber by the conclus…

Noisy Spiking in Visual Area V2 of Amblyopic Monkeys.

UNLABELLED: Interocular decorrelation of input signals in developing visual cortex can cause impaired binocular vision and amblyopia. Although increased intrinsic noise is thought to be responsible for a range of perceptual deficits in amblyopic humans, the neural basis for the elevated perceptual noise in amblyopic primates is not known. Here, we tested the idea that perceptual noise is linked to the neuronal spiking noise (variability) resulting from developmental alterations in cortical circuitry. To assess spiking noise, we analyzed the contrast-dependent dynamics of spike counts and spiki…

Horizontal strabismus surgical outcomes in a teaching hospital.

Strabismus may result in impaired stereopsis, diplopia, undesirable appearance, amblyopia and negative psychological impact. This study provides epidemiological and surgical outcome information about patients attending University College Hospital Galway requiring strabismus surgery. We report a retrospective analysis of 75 consecutive patients, who underwent horizontal strabismus surgery. Sixty-one (81.3%) patients had clinically significant refractive errors, hyperopia being the most common. Thirty-four (45.3%) patients had amblyopia and nine (12%) required further treatment. A cosmetically a…

Excision of periorbital hemangiomas to correct visual abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether early surgical excision of complicated periorbital hemangiomas (CPHs) reversed refractive errors and prevented further visual complications; CPHs can cause visual complications including astigmatism, strabismus, and occlusion of the visual axis with resultant amblyopia. DESIGN: Retrospective review of patient series from a tertiary care pediatric referral center. Nine patients with CPHs were managed by otolaryngology and ophthalmology services with complete surgical excision. Preoperative eye examination findings were compared with postoperative findings. Risk factors and timing of ocular complications after screening for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a leading cause of childhood vision loss, often resulting in long-term complications such as strabismus, amblyopia, and glaucoma. Despite advances in screening, limited data exist on which infants are at highest risk and when these complications typically emerge-an important gap given the nationwide shortage of pediatric ophthalmologists. This study aimed to identify predictors of post-ROP ocular complications and determine the optimal timing and frequency of pediatric ophthalmology follow-up visits. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 223 in…

Modeling monocular form deprivation in rabbits using a simulated-cataract intraocular lens.

AIM: To establish an animal model of form deprivation amblyopia based on a simulated cataract intraocular lens (IOLs). METHODS: Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-SiO2 thin films (PSF) with different degrees of opacity as IOL materials were prepared. The light transmission of the PSF-IOL was measured, and its in vitro biosafety was determined by cell counting kit (CCK)-8 assay using the HLEC-B3 cell line and ARPE-19 cell line. Subsequently, the in vivo safety was determined by implanting the PSF-IOL with 10% wt SiO2 into the right eyes of New Zealand white rabbits (PSF-IOL group), and compared with two …
