The use of a curved internal fixation device in adult pelvic Fractures: Short-Term clinical outcomes in high and low energy fractures.

BACKGROUND: Current methods of percutaneous fixation for pelvic and acetabular fractures are limited due to the curvature of the pelvic anatomy. The goals of fixation are to reduce pain, improve mobility and decrease length of stay. An implant specifically designed for use in the curved osseous fixation pathways of the pelvis may allow for more stable fixation. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to examine the results of a new method of fixation (CurvaFix®) for pelvic and acetabular fractures. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of CurvaFix was employed and evaluated for implant f

Ultrasound-guided release of carpal tunnel syndrome - Anterograde technique.

Compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel is a frequent pathology with severe functional impact. An ultrasound-guided technique was developed to preserve structures, diminish scar fibrosis and enable fast return to full activity. Its advantages are safety and low additional cost. Ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release is indicated in moderate and severe carpal tunnel syndrome persisting after conservative treatment. A preoperative ultrasound scan is recommended to evaluate anatomy. Recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome, secondary carpal tunnel syndrome and anatomic variants compromising

Pterional vs. lateral supraorbital approach in the management of middle cerebral artery aneurysms: insights from a phantom model study.

The pterional approach has traditionally been employed for managing middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms. With potential benefits like reduced surgical morbidity and improved postoperative recovery, the lateral supraorbital approach (LSO) should be considered individually based on aneurysm morphology, location and patient-specific variations of the MCA anatomy, which requires considerable technical expertise traditionally acquired through years of experience. The goal of this study was the development and evaluation of a novel phantom simulator in the context of clinical decision-making in t

Critical appraisal of clinical practice guidelines for otitis media in Asian and Western countries with consideration of updates: A narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Acute otitis media is a common disease in children under the age of 5 years due to their primitive ear anatomy. One of its consequences is otitis media with effusion (OME), which is a condition wherein serous secretion accumulates in the middle ear due to Eustachian tube dysfunction. OME results in conductive hearing loss, impacting children's learning and development. This review aimed to identify discrepancies in clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for managing OME in children across Asian and Western countries, focusing on updates to these guidelines. METHODS: A comparative r

Comparative digestive morphology and physiology of five species of Peromyscus under controlled environment and diet.

Digestive morphology and physiology differ across animal species, with many comparative studies uncovering relationships between animal ecology or diet, and the morphology and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. However, many of these studies compare wild-caught animals feeding on uncontrolled diets and compare broadly related taxa. Thus, few studies have disentangled the phenotypic consequences of genetics from those potentially caused by the environment, especially across closely related species that occupy similar ecological niches. Here, we examined differences in digestive morpholog

An anatomical study of the skull, the dorsal and ventral nasal conchal bullae and paranasal sinuses in normal Noma horses: Computed tomographic anatomical and morphometric findings.

Noma horses have the smallest body size among native Japanese horses and are classified as pony breeds by their size. Additionally, the Japanese horse breeds are classified into a single lineage, which includes Mongolian horses. Great intraspecific differences reportedly exist in the head shapes of domesticated horses, which have been investigated in various horse breeds. The present study aimed to evaluate the size of the nasal conchal bullae, and the paranasal sinuses of Noma horses in relation to the skull dimensions using computed tomography. Reconstructed images of the heads of five adult

Sight Unseen: Diagnostic Yield and Safety Outcomes of a Novel Multimodality Navigation Bronchoscopy Platform with Real-Time Target Acquisition.

BACKGROUND: Several advanced bronchoscopy platforms are currently available, but the clinical data supporting their use vary. Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) remains the dominant technology; it is limited by its reliance on preoperative computed tomography, which only approximates patient anatomy during the procedure. Recently, ENB was enhanced with the (1) addition of digital tomosynthesis-based navigation correction, (2) improvements in planning algorithms, and (3) continuous real-time guidance (Illumisite™; Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA). There are currently no clinical data

Mechanical performance of thoracolumbosacral pedicle screw systems: An analysis of data submitted to the Food and Drug Administration.

Thoracolumbosacral pedicle screw systems (TPSSs) are spinal implants commonly utilized to stabilize the spine as an adjunct to fusion for a variety of spinal pathologies. These systems consist of components including pedicle screws, rods, hooks, and various connectors that allow the surgeon to create constructs that can be affixed to a wide range of spinal anatomy. During the development and regulatory clearance process, TPSSs are subjected to mechanical testing such as static and dynamic compression bending per ASTM F1717, axial and torsional grip testing per ASTM F1798, and foam block pullou

Conserved characteristics of ocular refractive development - Did the eye evolve once?

It has been speculated that the unitary eyes of vertebrates and molluscs, and the compound eyes of insects and crustaceans, evolved separately. On the other hand, the common use of rhodopsin as a photoreceptor molecule, and the conservation of Pax6 as a master control gene for eye development, suggest instead that the eye evolved once. Yet, recently the molecular genetics that had seemed to suggest a definitive answer to this evolutionary point has once again become cloudy. Here we propose an alternative approach to addressing the question of eye evolution through comparative analyses of physi

The African clawed frog Xenopus laevis: A model organism to study regeneration of the central nervous system.

While an injury to the central nervous system (CNS) in humans and mammals is irreversible, amphibians and teleost fish have the capacity to fully regenerate after severe injury to the CNS. Xenopus laevis has a high potential to regenerate the brain and spinal cord during larval stages (47-54), and loses this capacity during metamorphosis. The optic nerve has the capacity to regenerate throughout the frog's lifespan. Here, we review CNS regeneration in frogs, with a focus in X. laevis, but also provide some information about X. tropicalis and other frogs. We start with an overview of the anatom
