Four studies were conducted to examine the efficacy of a novel topical combination of fipronil, (S)-methoprene, eprinomectin, and praziquantel (BROADLINE(®), Merial) against Ancylostoma tubaeforme and Ancylostoma braziliense hookworms of cats. BACKGROUND: Hookworms infect millions of people worldwide and can cause severe clinical symptoms in their hosts. Prospective cohort studies in Brazil show high rates of hookworm reinfection in malnourished children compared to well-nourished children, despite previous treatment. Additionally, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections can worsen the nutritional status of affected populations. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the effects of host malnutrition during Ancylostoma ceylanicum infection and how this infection affects host physiological parameters using a hamster model.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum is a common hookworm of dogs, cats and humans in Asia. More recently, this hookworm was found to infect dogs in Australia. Blood-feeding pathogens digest hemoglobin (Hb) as a source of nutrition, but little is known about this process in multicellular parasites. An epidemic of eosinophilic enteritis (93 cases) has occurred in Townsville, northern Queensland, Australia. A hookworm was found attached to a resected, inflamed ileal segment from 1 patient but the species could not be identified. An adult hookworm of species Ancylostoma caninum was recovered at colonoscopy from the terminal ileum of a later patient. All of 38 patients interviewed in an epidemiological survey described behaviour which could have exposed them to infective larvae of this widespread dog parasite.

The alterations of serum enzymes induced in the host system of swiss albino mice by infection with Ancylostoma caninum larvae have been studied in multiple doses of infection. It was found that the level of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase and amylase increased significantly throughout the infection period when compared with controls. In infected animals, increase of enzymes was influenced by the host-parasite interactions caused due to the retained concentration of larval antigens.

The infectivity and migratory pattern of Ancylostoma ceylanicum infective larvae (L3) were investigated in hamsters infected by various routes. Following oral administration 40-70% of L3 attained maturity and there was no tissue migration.
