This study aimed at examining the epidemiological features of rabies in humans in Zimbabwe. The data were taken from internal reports of the department of veterinary technical services at Harare covering the period 1st January 1992-31st December 2003 inclusive. Positive cases were examined in relation to age and sex of the victim, animal vector involved, season, and land-use categories. The majority of the confirmed positive human cases (85.7%) were recorded in communal areas. The 5-19 year age group and males constituted a highly vulnerable group. Over 90% of the cases were due to dog bites w

Advances in transplantation biology have enhanced the possibility of xenotransplantation as a therapeutic option for end-stage organ failure. The potential spread of animal-derived pathogens to the recipient and to the general population, termed "xenosis," is a potential complication of interspecies transplantation. Recognition of such infections will be complicated by the presence of new pathogens, new clinical syndromes, and altered behavior of these organisms in the immunocompromised xenograft recipient. Particular concern exists over the activation of latent viruses, including retroviruses

Strongylus vulgaris populations in the cranial mesenteric arteries, caecum and colon were studied in 14 donkeys obtained from a communal area of the Zimbabwean highveld during July and November, 1986, and January and April 1987. Adult parasites were present in all animals and larvae in the cranial mesenteric arteries of 12 animals. Aged animals had high worm burdens. The number of adult parasites varied from 63 to 1255 (mean 382) and of larvae in the arteries from 0 to 181 (mean 69). The mean adult worm burdens were highest in July (400) and November (488), and lowest in April (107). The mean

Prenatal methylmercury poisoning of C57BL/6J mice was followed by the development of communicating hydrocephalus in 15% to 25% of surviving offspring. Although examination of the serially sectioned cerebral aqueduct in hydrocephalic animals revealed the presence of stenosis, complete occlusion of the lumen was not observed. The ependymal epithelium of the cerebral aqueduct was preserved, and there was no evidence of periaqueductal inflammation or reactive gliosis. Edema and vacuolar change were, however, observed subependymally. The cerebral white matter, which bore the brunt of the degenerati

Nonhuman animals use nonverbal cues to communicate their mental state about positive and negative events, including pain. Pain is a multidimensional process that elicits behavioral changes aimed at preventing further damage and promoting healing. These changes include restrictions on movement and/or activity, as well as adopting body postures to relieve pain. Additionally, changes in the ear and tail position have been associated with pain perception and are considered a sign of pain in several domestic species. Thus, this review aims to critically analyze and discuss the behavioral modificati

Experimental models are important tools for understanding the etiological phenomena involved in various pathophysiological events. In this context, different animal models are used to study the elements triggering the pathophysiology of primary graft dysfunction after transplantation to evaluate potential treatments. Currently, we can divide experimental donation models into two large groups: donation after brain death and donation after circulatory arrest. In addition, the deleterious effects associated with hemorrhagic shock should be considered when considering animal models of organ donati

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne zoonotic disease. Over the past decade, CCHF cases in humans have emerged in Turkey and reemerged in the Balkan countries, Ukraine and Tajikistan. Occupational contact with infected livestock has been recognized as a common cause of the disease. A cross-sectional seroprevalence study in livestock was conducted in farming communities of an endemic area in Bulgaria, southeastern Europe. Overall, 72% of the tested animals were positive for IgG antibodies to CCHF virus. By the time the animals were one-year old almost 50% had serologic eviden

Clinical infections attributed to carbapenemase-producing bacteria are a pressing public health concern owing to limited therapeutic options and linked antimicrobial resistance. In recent years, studies have reported the emergence and spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae and their public health impact. This has been closely followed by the global dissemination of highly resistant and virulent zooanthroponotic extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) ST131 clones. It has also been hypothesized that companion animals may act as a reservoir for Gram-negative multidrug-r

BACKGROUND: Translating research evidence into practice has become a priority for academics, funders and public institutions worldwide. However, many research projects still lack strategies and funds for policy-related research translation, innovation, dissemination and uptake activities. This study focuses on research evidence on rabies produced by Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d'Ivoire under GAVI's project. It aims to (i) identify the mechanism used by researchers to share evidence with practitioners, policy makers and local communities and to (ii) identify what facilitat

Sheep scab causes economic losses and animal welfare problems and has proven difficult to control in the UK. Research has highlighted the importance of developing place-based approaches to understanding and controlling sheep scab. This paper builds on this literature through introducing the concept of marginality in the case study of managing sheep scab on the island of Lewis and Harris in the Scottish Western Isles. The paper also proposes steps for developing a place-based understanding of biosecurity. The research draws on interviews and workshops with crofters analysed using thematic analy

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The skin harbors a dynamic community of microorganisms, where contact with humans, other animals and the environment can alter microbial communities. Most research on the human skin microbiome features Western populations living in hygienic conditions, yet these populations have vastly different patterns of environmental contact than the majority of people on Earth, including those living in developing countries.
METHODOLOGY: We studied skin microbial communities of humans and cattle (zebu) in rural Madagascar to investigate how zebu ownership affects microbial comp

A common strategy of pathogenic bacteria is to form close associations with parasitic insects that feed on animals and to use these insects as vectors for their own transmission. Pathogens interact closely with other coexisting bacteria within the insect, and interactions between co-occurring bacteria may influence the vector competency of the parasite. Interactions between particular lineages can be explored through measures of alpha-diversity. Furthermore, general patterns of bacterial community assembly can be explored through measures of beta-diversity. Here, we use pyrosequencing (n=115,9

Heterogeneity of internal parasite communities amongst host animals is shaped by processes at multiple scales, including landscape distribution of parasites, individual host suitability, and parasite interactions within a host. As a result, pathogen co-occurrence patterns vary across space and time and among host populations. Often the challenges of wildlife sampling limit understanding of the drivers of pathogen community heterogeneity in host animals. In this study, we explore patterns and drivers of parasite community heterogeneity amongst wild bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) hosts over tim

Leptospirosis, a neglected bacterial zoonosis, is a global public health issue disproportionately affecting impoverished communities such as urban slums in the developing world. A variety of animal species, including peridomestic rodents and dogs, can be infected with different strains of leptospirosis. Humans contract leptospirosis via exposure to water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals. Due to the unavailability of safe and effective vaccines, preventive strategies mainly focus on minimizing human exposure to contaminated environment. In marginalized communities, this a

The importance of Bacillus as feed additives in animals' production is well recognized. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Bacillus pumilus are involved in promoting animal growth performance and immunological indicators. However, their precise roles in the modulation of microbiota and immune response in goat rumen and intestines have not been investigated. The aim of the current work was to evaluate the impacts of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens fsznc-06 and Bacillus pumilus fsznc-09 in the development of rumen and small intestinal and microbial communities in rumen and caecum of weanling Jintang blac

Predators often search for prey while moving through the environment, but there are important exceptions, including the way sedentary predators sometimes rely on signals for drawing prey to within striking distance1,2. Some spiders, for instance, leave the remnants of previously-captured prey in their webs where they function as static lures that effectively attract a diverse array of additional prey3456. However, important questions remain concerning how specific the targeted prey may be and how dynamic, instead of static, signalling might be. With these questions as our rationale, we initiat

In insect societies, worker policing controls genetic conflicts between individuals and increases colony efficiency. However, disentangling relatedness from colony-level effects is usually impossible. We studied policing in the parthenogenetic ant Cerapachys biroi, where genetic conflicts are absent due to clonality and reproduction is synchronized through stereotyped colony cycles. We show that larval cues regulate the cycles by suppressing ovarian activity and that individuals that fail to respond to these cues are policed and executed by their nestmates. These individuals are genetically id
