Uropathogenic bacterial profile and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of isolates among gynecological cases admitted to Jimma Medical Center, South West Ethiopia.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial infections in women; about 50% of women get during their life time. Moreover, it is a common health problem in patients with gynecological pathologies, which increases the chance of acquiring infection. The aim of this study was to determine the bacterial profile that causes UTI and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern among admitted gynecological cases. A cross-sectional study was conducted in south west Ethiopia region. A total of 386 patients admitted with gynecological cases were recruited by sequential sampling technique

The Widely Used Antimicrobial Triclosan Induces High Levels of Antibiotic Tolerance In Vitro and Reduces Antibiotic Efficacy up to 100-Fold In Vivo.

The antimicrobial triclosan is used in a wide range of consumer products ranging from toothpaste, cleansers, socks, and baby toys. A bacteriostatic inhibitor of fatty acid synthesis, triclosan is extremely stable and accumulates in the environment. Approximately 75% of adults in the United States have detectable levels of the compound in their urine, with a sizeable fraction of individuals (>10%) having urine concentrations equal to or greater than the minimal inhibitory concentration for Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Previous work has identified conn

Similar Neutrophil-Driven Inflammatory and Antibacterial Responses in Elderly Patients with Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Bacteriuria.

Differential diagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infection (UTI) is based on the presence of diverse symptoms, including fever (≥38.5°C), rigors, malaise, lethargy, flank pain, hematuria, suprapubic discomfort, dysuria, and urgent or frequent urination. There is consensus in the medical community that ASB warrants antibiotic treatment only for patients undergoing urological procedures that lead to mucosal bleeding, catheterized individuals whose ASB persists for more than 48 h after catheter removal, and pregnant women. Pyuria is associated with UTI and implicates hos

[Comparative studies on activities of antimicrobial agents against causative organisms isolated from patients with urinary tract infections (2003). III. Secular changes in susceptibility].

The bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) isolated from 565 patients diagnosed as urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 14 institutions in Japan were collected between August 2003 and July 2004. The susceptibilities of these bacteria to various antimicrobial agents were examined. The bacteria were divided into 2 groups consisting of uncomplicated UTIs and complicated UTIs (with and without indwelling catheter) based on their isolation origins. The results were compared with those obtained between 1994 and 2002. The dr

Metabolically deficient dwarf-colony mutants of Escherichia coli: deficiency and resistance to antibiotics of strains isolated from urine culture.

Sixteen metabolically deficient dwarf-colony mutants of Escherichia coli were isolated from urine culture and represented about 2% of all E. coli isolated during the same period. In 14 cases, mutants were isolated from debilitated patients: elderly persons or patients in the terminal stages of a chronic disease. In 15 of these subjects, deficient dwarf-colony mutants appeared to be the true cause of urinary tract infection, since there was leukocyturia and important bacteriuria, and organisms were obtained in pure culture. Study of metabolic deficiencies on Davis synthetic medium and nutritive

Seminal vesicle abscess with orchitis and emphysematous cystitis following traumatic urethral injury from accidental urinary catheter dislodgement.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urinary catheters are widely used in hospitalized patients but can be inadvertently dislodged due to trauma, leading to complications such as catheter-associated urinary tract infections and urological injuries. CASE REPORT: An 87-year-old man developed a seminal vesicle abscess (SVA) caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa following urethral injury due to accidental urinary catheter dislodgement. The patient presented with hematuria and penile bleeding following dislodgement of the urinary catheter, and subsequently developed fever and a urinary tract infection. Computed tomo

The effectiveness of nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin and trimethoprim for the treatment of cystitis in relation to renal function.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effect of renal function on clinical failure rates of nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin and trimethoprim for the treatment of cystitis in primary care. METHODS: Data were retrospectively obtained from 78 Dutch general practitioner (GP) practices between 2013 and 2019. Eligible episodes in patients (>11 years) were those requiring 5 days of nitrofurantoin (NF5), single-dose fosfomycin-trometamol (FT1), 3 days of trimethoprim (TMP3) for uncomplicated cystitis, or 7 days of nitrofurantoin (NF7) or trimethoprim (TMP7) for complicated cystitis. Clinical failure was defined as

Daily antibiotic cost of nosocomial infections in a Turkish university hospital.

BACKGROUND: Many studies associated nosocomial infections with increased hospital costs due to extra days in hospital, staff time, extra investigations and drug treatment. The cost of antibiotic treatment for these infections represents a significant part of hospital expenditure. This prospective observational study was designed to determine the daily antibiotic cost of nosocomial infections per infected adult patient in Akdeniz University Hospital. METHODS: All adult patients admitted to the ICUs between January 1, 2000, and June 30, 2003 who had only one nosocomial infection during their st

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections and other infections in patients hospitalized for acute stroke: A prospective cohort study of two different silicone catheters.

OBJECTIVE: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common healthcare-associated infection. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of a silicone catheter coated with an ultrathin layer of a combination of the noble metals gold, palladium and silver (BIP™-silicone catheter) could reduce the incidence of CAUTI and antibiotic prescription compared with a standard silicone catheter in a cohort of acute neurological patients suffering primarily from stroke. At the same time, all infectious events requiring prescription of an antimicrobial agent were

Antibiotic Guidelines for Critically Ill Patients in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that inappropriate use of antimicrobials is the major driver of antimicrobial resistance. To combat this, antibiotic stewardship has been demonstrated to reduce antibiotic usage, decrease the prevalence of resistance, lead to significant economic gains and better patients' outcomes. In Nigeria, antimicrobial guidelines for critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs), with infections are scarce. We set out to develop antimicrobial guidelines for this category of patients. METHODS: A committee of 12 experts, consisting of Clinical Microbiologists, In

Double urinary bladder voiding technique post removal of urethral catheter in renal allograft recipients.

To evaluate the effect of urinary bladder double voiding technique on the incidence of urinary tract infection in the transplant patients with double J stents after the removal of the urethral catheters in the post-transplant period, we evaluated 65 recipients of live kidney transplant in whom we inserted double J stents and urethral catheters at the time of transplantation. After removing the urethral catheters on post-operation day six, we instructed a group of 30 patients to double void their bladders within five minutes after the first micturition. The rest of the patients served as contro

Pregnancy in rheumatology patients exposed to anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha therapies are considered category B drugs for pregnancy. Although sometimes prescribed to women of reproductive age, data in humans are limited with regard to safety for a developing fetus. The objectives of the present article are to report experience of anti-TNF-alpha use in pregnancy, and review the international literature. METHODS: Since 1999 the present authors have used anti-TNF-alpha (infliximab, etanercept, adalimumab) to treat patients with various chronic rheumatic conditions. All patients were prospectively followed during their

Epidemiology and microbiology of catheter-associated urinary tract infections: A 14-year surveillance study at a tertiary care center in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most common device-associated healthcare-acquired infections and pose a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems worldwide. However, there is a paucity of data on CAUTI epidemiology and microbiology in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, including Lebanon. METHODS: This 14-year retrospective cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Lebanon. It analyzed data on all adult patients diagnosed with CAUTI between January 2009 and December 2022 in intensive care units (ICUs) and between

Comparative efficacy and safety of non-polymyxin antibiotics against nosocomial pneumonia, complicated intra-abdominal infection, or complicated urinary tract infection: A network meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials.

OBJECTIVES: The increasing epidemic of infections caused by drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria has led to the development of several antibiotic therapies. Owing to the scarcity of head-to-head comparisons of current and emerging antibiotics, the present network meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of antibiotics in patients with nosocomial pneumonia, complicated intra-abdominal infection, or complicated urinary tract infection. METHODS: Two independent researchers systematically searched databases up to August 2022 and included 26 randomised controlled trials that fulfill
