Impact of clear, loud, and slow speech on scaled intelligibility and speech severity in Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

PURPOSE: The perceptual consequences of rate reduction, increased vocal intensity, and clear speech were studied in speakers with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's disease (PD), and healthy controls. METHOD: Seventy-eight speakers read sentences in habitual, clear, loud, and slow conditions. Sentences were equated for peak amplitude and mixed with multitalker babble for presentation to listeners. Using a computerized visual analog scale, listeners judged intelligibility or speech severity as operationally defined in Sussman and Tjaden (2012). RESULTS: Loud and clear but not slow condition

Lingual frenectomy and alveolar tap production: an acoustic and perceptual study.

In this phonetic study, productions of the consonant in the stressed syllable position of the word arara as produced by 13 subjects with short and/or anterior lingual frenulum were compared before and after lingual frenectomy. The results from the measurement of the stressed consonant duration and from the identification of the consonant manners of articulation based on the inspection of spectral characteristics are discussed and related to the answers to a perceptual identification test. After surgery, the number of tap productions did not increase, but alveolar productions did. These clinica

[Carotid body tumors - diagnosis and treatment].

Carotid body tumors are rare, with a tendency of slow but progressive growth, giving rise to external compression and/or involvement of the carotid arteries, craniofacial nerves and other neighbouring structures. They are adequately vascularized, with surgery being the treatment of choice. Localization and vascularity require comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, and most likely, vascular surgeons with carotid experience and neurosurgeons would make the best teams. In certain cases the participation of craniofacial surgeon is likewise needed. Over the period 1989 through 1999, in the Dep

The effects of a maxillary speech-aid prosthesis for the combined tongue and mandibular resection patient.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a protocol for the fabrication of a prosthesis that would improve speech in individuals who have undergone complete removal of the tongue and mandible. A 60-year-old man was suffering from severe xerostomia and was unable to produce intelligible speech. Speech analysis without the prosthesis revealed a profound articulatory disorder. With the prosthesis, xerostomia was eliminated and the subject had fewer articulatory errors of severity. Improvement in speech intelligibility was significant at p less than 0.001.

Relationship between craniomandibular dysfunction and pattern of speech sound production in a series of first-graders.

This report investigates associations between prevalence of functional disturbances of the masticatory system and speech disorders. The subjects were 157 children referred for speech therapy to the hospital and a control group all 130 first-graders at two elementary schools, mean age 7 years 6 months. During clinical examinations, signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction were recorded by the same dentist. Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed by the same phoniatrician using the Remes Articulatory Test (Remes, 1975) for the Finnish language. The results showed that in the hospital referral

Patients' goals when initiating long-acting injectable buprenorphine treatment for opioid use disorder: findings from a longitudinal qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable buprenorphine (LAIB) is a new treatment for opioid use disorder that has been introduced against an international policy backdrop of recovery and person-centred care. This paper explores the goals that people want to achieve from LAIB to identify potential implications for policy and practice. METHODS: Data derive from longitudinal qualitative interviews conducted with 26 people (18 male; 8 female) initiating LAIB in England and Wales, UK (June 2021-March 2022). Participants were interviewed up to five times by telephone over six months (107 interviews in to

Viscoelastic cervical total disc replacement devices: Design concepts.

Cervical disc replacement (CDR) is a motion-preserving surgical procedure for treating patients with degenerative disorders. Numerous reports of first generation CDR "ball-and-socket" articulating devices have shown satisfactory clinical results. As a result, CDR devices have been safely implemented in the surgeon's armamentarium on a global scale. However, only minor design improvements have been made over the last few years, as first generation CDRs devices were based on traditional synovial joint arthroplasty designs. As a consequence, these articulating designs have limited resemblance to

Prevalence and correlates of mental and neurodevelopmental symptoms and disorders among deaf children and adolescents: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known of the prevalence and correlates of mental and neurodevelopmental symptoms and disorders among deaf children and adolescents. Research suggests that this is a vulnerable population group at high risk of these disorders. However, little is known of correlates of prevalence estimates of these mental disorders and it seems that heterogeneous tools have been used to derive these estimates. Given the heterogeneity of studies measuring the prevalence and correlates of mental and neurodevelopmental symptoms and disorders among deaf children and adolescents, we seek to sy

Cleft Lip/Palate Speech: Optimizing Speech Outcomes With Limited Speech Pathology Resources.

Children born with cleft palate, with or without cleft lip (CP ± L), are at high risk for speech and resonance disorders that can significantly impact communication and quality of life. Causes of cleft-related speech disorders include velopharyngeal insufficiency, malocclusion, dental anomalies, and airway obstruction. Accurate differential diagnosis is critical, as mismanagement can result in unnecessary surgery or ineffective therapy. Nonetheless, many children do not receive specialist evaluation or targeted intervention. Optimal outcomes require coordinated multidisciplinary care, with spe

Reading disabilities in SLI and dyslexia result from distinct phonological impairments.

Children with specific language impairment (SLI) who show impaired phonological processing are at risk of developing reading disabilities, which raises the question of phonological impairment commonality between developmental dyslexia (DD) and SLI. In order to distinguish the failing phonological processes in SLI and DD, we investigated the different steps involved in speech processing going from perceptual discrimination through various aspects of phonological memory. Our results show that whereas the memory for sequence is likewise impaired in either disorder, children with SLI have to face

Quality assessment of genetic counseling process in the context of presymptomatic testing for late-onset disorders: a thematic analysis of three review articles.

Presymptomatic testing (PST) is available for a range of late-onset disorders. Health practitioners generally follow guidelines regarding appropriate number of counseling sessions, involvement of multidisciplinary teams, topics for pretest discussion, and follow-up sessions; however, more understanding is needed about what helps consultands effectively and the impact of amount and quality of genetic counseling on the psychosocial sequelae of PST for late-onset disorders. We conducted a thematic analysis of three review articles on quality of the genetic counseling process, aiming at (1) explor

MRI analysis of an inherited speech and language disorder: structural brain abnormalities.

Analyses of brain structure in genetic speech and language disorders provide an opportunity to identify neurobiological phenotypes and further elucidate the neural bases of language and its development. Here we report such investigations in a large family, known as the KE family, half the members of which are affected by a severe disorder of speech and language, which is transmitted as an autosomal-dominant monogenic trait. The structural brain abnormalities associated with this disorder were investigated using two morphometric methods of MRI analysis. A voxel-based morphometric method was use
