Copper deficiency has been described in premature infants on hyperalimentation. The bony abnormalities are generalized and are usually associated with anemia and neutropenia. These changes present with normal serum levels of iron, ascorbic acid, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, as well as with depressed levels of copper and ceruloplasmin. They appear at about three to nine months of age in infants with a low birth weight who are receiving total parenteral nutrition, but can be prevented by greater than normal maintenance levels of copper supplements. A significant correlation between liver ascorbic acid (AA) and total bile acids or liver bile acids has been established in guinea-pigs by direct determination of the bile acids, confirming an earlier hypothesis. The oxidation of cholesterol to bile acids is dependent on the AA status, but it cannot be further stimulated by AA when the animals are already on an adequate intake of the vitamin. This suggests that AA has a hypocholesterolaemic effect over a limited range of AA status.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disorder is a haemoglobinopathy prevalent in the Vidharbha region of Maharashtra, central India. With recent evidence of oxidative stress in sickle haemoglobinopathy, a possible deficiency of antioxidant vitamins was suspected.
METHODS: We measured plasma vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene levels in persons with heterozygous (n=80) and homozygous sickle cell state (n=20), and suitable healthy controls for these groups (n=100 and 66, respectively) in a community-based study in the villages near our institution.

The results of an epidemiological study using the case-control method on 150 oesophageal cancer cases, observed at the IIIrd Surgical Department in Padua and on 150 controls are presented. The results show that alcohol an maize flour (corn meal) are two aetiopathogenetic factors of verified statistical significance in oesophageal carcinoma in the Veneto population. This confirms other studies among populations with a high risk of oesophageal cancer.

Fifty premature neonates were followed during the first 2 months of life to study the supply of the body with vitamins A, B6, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin and carotenoids with regard to the body weight upon birth and prematurity grade. The children were kept on natural feeding (donor's breast milk). Premature neonates were found to be short of individual vitamins during certain periods of life. The data obtained indicate that it is desirable to prevent vitamin deficiency by additional vitaminization with regard to the body weight upon birth and prematurity grade.

Mandoor Bhasma (MB) medicine, based on classical Indian Ayurveda, was size- and surface-modified to improve its therapeutic efficiency for treating iron-deficient anemia. Physical grinding reduced the size of MB to the nanoparticle (nano-MB) range without changing its chemical composition, as measured by particle size distribution.
