An ocular cysticercosis case of a nine-year-old Balinese girl in Indonesia is reported. She presented with redness and pain in the left eye and showed a cysticercus in the anterior chamber in December 2010. Morphological feature of the cysticercus removed from the anterior chamber indicated that it was an immature cysticercus of Taenia species with no hooklets. However, mitochondrial DNA analysis using a piece of histopathological specimen revealed it a cysticercus of Taenia solium Asian genotype. Serology by immunoblot and ELISA highly specific to cysticercosis was negative.

SUBJECTS: One hundred midsagittal sections of randomly selected adult cadaver heads with intact maxillary sinuses, pterygopalatine fossa, and surrounding structures.

PURPOSE: We assessed the prevalence of major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, and other Asian populations compared to non-Hispanic Whites in the United States.
METHODS: We analyzed aggregated data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2003 to 2005. Bivariate analyses were used to determine differences in the prevalence of CVD risk factors among Asian subgroups and white adults. Acute renal failure is an unusual complication of wasp stings. We report two cases of renal failure after multiple wasp stings (Vespa affinis). Both patients had evidence of intravascular haemolysis, hepatic dysfunction, oligo-anuria and azotaemia and required dialysis. The first patient had severe hemolysis, rhabdomyolysis, pigment and venom nephropathy and died on the 8th day in hospital. We report a 38-year-old Korean man with sporadic rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP), who had a Thr 618 Met mutation in the Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase alpha3 subunit gene (ATP1A3). At the age of 21, he acutely developed severe dystonia and parkinsonism, which rapidly deteriorated into a wheelchair-bound state within 4 days. He is the first Asian RDP patient confirmed by genetic testing, ascertaining that RDP gene mutation is present in Asians. Pathophysiological considerations are briefly discussed.

The multilocus sequence typing scheme used previously for phylogenetic analysis of Escherichia coli was applied to 107 clinical isolates of Shigella flexneri. DNA sequencing of 3423 bp throughout seven housekeeping genes identified eight new allele types and ten new sequence types among the isolates. S. flexneri serotypes 1-5, X and Y were clustered together in a group containing many allelic variants while serotype 6 formed a distinct group, as previously established.

Complete sequences were obtained for the coding portions of the mitochondrial (mt) genomes of Schistosoma mansoni (NMRI strain, Puerto Rico; … % for amino acids and 73-79% for nucleotides). The identity between the genes of S. mansoni and the Asian schistosomes is far less (33-66% for amino acids and 54-68% for nucleotides), an observation consistent with the known phylogenetic distance between S. mansoni and the other species.
