[Characteristics of the functional state of the nervous system of middle-aged persons during anti-orthostatic hypokinesia].

The functional state of the nervous system and its autonomic compartment was investigated in 15 men, aged 40-52 years, during their 30-day exposure to head-down tilt (-8 degrees). Group 1 consisted of 9 subjects with early manifestations of cerebral atherosclerosis and Group 2 included 6 subjects with cerebral atherosclerosis and arterial hypertension. The control group incorporated 9 healthy volunteers, aged 25-39 years. During adaptation to head-down tilt, middle-aged and young subjects showed consistent changes in the nervous system. In response to perturbation effects, autonomic reactions

The proarrhythmogenic role of autonomics and emerging neuromodulation approaches to prevent sudden death in cardiac ion channelopathies.

Ventricular arrhythmias in cardiac channelopathies are linked to autonomic triggers, which are sub-optimally targeted in current management strategies. Improved molecular understanding of cardiac channelopathies and cellular autonomic signalling could refine autonomic therapies to target the specific signalling pathways relevant to the specific aetiologies as well as the central nervous system centres involved in the cardiac autonomic regulation. This review summarizes key anatomical and physiological aspects of the cardiac autonomic nervous system and its impact on ventricular arrhythmias in …

[Variability of sinus rhythm and cardiac failure].

Under pathological conditions, the autonomic nervous system, which continually regulates cardiac function, may have adverse effects on pump function and electrical activation. The sinus rhythm is an indirect marker of the different components of the autonomic nervous system and changes in the heart rate reflect the permanent variation of vagal and sympathetic tone. Analysis of variability in the temporal or frequential domaines, provides information about the modulation of the different components of the autonomic nervous system. In the post-infarction period, studies have shown that the heart…

[A case in which tofisopam was effective for treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia].

Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) is a reentrant tachycardia, and the autonomic nervous system influences the paroxysms of PSVT. Tofisopam (Grandaxin) is a derivative of benzodiazepines. It is reported that heart rate variability (HRV) reveals the function of the autonomic nervous system and is used as an index of the effects of the autonomic nervous system on the heart rhythm. In previous studies, it was reported that tofisopam improved HRV. In this case report, the frequency of PSVT was significantly decreased and subjective symptoms of arrhythmia were eliminated after the admin…

Ganglionated plexi as neuromodulation targets for atrial fibrillation.

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the genesis of atrial fibrillation and is one of the candidate targets for atrial fibrillation therapy. This review focuses on the role of the autonomic nervous system in atrial fibrillation development and discusses the results of the ganglionated plexi catheter and surgical ablation in preclinical and clinical studies. The heart is innervated by the extrinsic and intrinsic autonomic nervous systems. The intrinsic autonomic nervous system consists of multiple ganglionated plexi and axons, which innervate the neighboring atrial myocardium…

Autonomic abnormalities in children with functional abdominal pain: coincidence or etiology?

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that autonomic neuropathies may adversely affect gastrointestinal motility by involving the extrins … Functional abdominal pain in the current patients is associated with generalized dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. This dysfunction can be peripheral or central in different individuals but seems to be restricted to the sympathetic branch. The known function of the sympathetic nervous system as the motility "brake" suggests that pain could be a manifestation of …

Cognitive Deficit in Heart Failure and the Benefits of Aerobic Physical Activity.

Heart Failure is a clinical syndrome prevalent throughout the world and a major contribution to mortality of cardiac patients in Brazil. In addition, this pathology is strongly related to cerebral dysfunction, with a high prevalence of cognitive impairment. Many mechanisms may be related to cognitive loss, such as cerebral hypoperfusion, atrophy and loss of gray matter of the brain, and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The literature is clear regarding the benefits of aerobic physical activity in healthy populations in the modulation of the autonomic nervous system and in brain fun…

The effects of meperidine and epidural analgesia in labor on maternal heart rate variability.

BACKGROUND: Epidural and parenteral opioid analgesia are two common methods of pain relief in labor that may influence the autonomic nervous system. However, these effects on laboring women have not yet been adequately studied. The aim of our study was to assess the effects of these two methods of analgesia on autonomic nervous system modulation of maternal heart rate variability in laboring women. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on 64 laboring women; 33 received epidural analgesia with bupivacaine and fentanyl and 31 intravenous meperidine and promethazine. Power spe…

Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity.

Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) is a relatively common, but often unrecognized, complication of acute diffuse or multifocal brain diseases, most frequently encountered in young comatose patients with severe traumatic brain injury. It is presumed to be caused by loss of cortical inhibitory modulation of diencephalic and brain stem centers and possible additional maladaptive changes in the spinal cord that combine to produce exaggerated sympathetic responses to stimulation. The syndrome consists of repeated sudden episodes of tachycardia, tachypnea, hypertension, sweating, and sometim

Autonomic dysfunction in peripheral nerve disease.

Autonomic dysfunction is a common complication of peripheral neuropathies. Frequently, it is of little clinical importance, but in some conditions there may be profound disturbance of autonomic function, including orthostatic hypotension, impairment of heart rate and bladder control, and impotence. Some autonomic neuropathies are of acute onset, but most are chronic and of gradual onset. Diseases that primarily affect small fibers in peripheral nerves or cause acute demyelination of small myelinated fibers are those most likely to cause autonomic dysfunction. Conditions that cause severe auton

Autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson disease and animal models.

Parkinson disease has traditionally been classified as a movement disorder, despite patients' accounts of diverse symptoms stemming from impairments in numerous body systems. Today, Parkinson disease is increasingly recognized by clinicians and scientists as a complex neurodegenerative disorder featuring both motor and nonmotor manifestations concomitant with pathology throughout all major branches of the nervous system. Dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, or dysautonomia, is a common feature of Parkinson disease. It produces signs and symptoms that severely affect patients' quality o…

Autonomic involvement in inherited neuropathies.

The inherited peripheral neuropathies constitute a large group of disorders, in some of which the causative metabolic defect has been identified whereas in the majority it is still unknown. Amongst the former, autonomic involvement is an important component in porphyric neuropathy, in the familial amyloid polyneuropathies, in Fabry's disease and in dopamine beta-hydroxylase deficiency. The latter group includes the hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies in some of which, such as the Riley-Day syndrome, autonomic disturbances are prominent, whereas in others they constitute only a minor

Congenital cholinergic nervous system dysfunction in identical twins.

We report identical male twins with secretory diarrhea, craniofacial abnormalities often found in G syndrome, hypospadias, and abnormalities of the cholinergic nervous system including achalasia, decreased tearing, corneal hypesthesia, positive Mecholyl test (eye and esophagus), and decreased sweating. The children also lacked fungiform papillae but were clinically distinct from patients with either the Riley-Day syndrome or acquired dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Assessment of autonomic nervous system function should be considered in infants with recurrent diarrhea or swallowing…
