Human performance interfaces in air traffic control.

This paper examines how human performance factors in air traffic control (ATC) affect each other through their mutual interactions. The paper extends the conceptual SHEL model of ergonomics to describe the ATC system as human performance interfaces in which the air traffic controllers interact with other human performance factors including other controllers, software, hardware, environment, and organisation. New research hypotheses about the relationships between human performance interfaces of the system are developed and tested on data collected from air traffic controllers, using structural

Exposure to galactic cosmic radiation and solar energetic particles.

Several investigations of the radiation field at aircraft altitudes have been undertaken during solar cycle 23 which occurred in the period 1993-2003. The radiation field is produced by the passage of galactic cosmic rays and their nuclear reaction products as well as solar energetic particles through the Earth's atmosphere. Galactic cosmic rays reach a maximum intensity when the sun is least active and are at minimum intensity during solar maximum period. During solar maximum an increased number of coronal mass ejections and solar flares produce high energy solar particles which can also pene

[Personality and psychic deadaptation of airline pilots with neurocirculatory dystonia].

In-depth clinical psychological investigation of airline pilots with neurocirculatory dystonia (n=194, mean age 38.57 +/- 0.85) and essentially healthy control pilots (n=183, mean age 38.4+/-0.92) revealed distinctive features in NCD pilots' mentality and behavior including personality, interpersonal communication, type of thinking, stress reaction, protection tactics, and mental dysfunctions. Psychic deadaptation such as symptoms of psychic asthenia, paranoia, depression, schizophrenia, and impulsive behavior had a negative effect on the clinical course and led to medical disqualification of

Adaptation of the horizontal vestibuloocular reflex in pilots.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The vestibular function in pilots has been reported as being different to that in other, normal subjects. However, there is little evidence as to why and when this occurs, and its cause is still in doubt. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in vestibular function in student pilots attending an elementary flight course, and in other active pilots, through the use of the slow harmonic acceleration (SHA) test and to verify the occurrence and timing of any vestibular function changes. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional and prospective group design. METHODS: The six st

Report of ejections in the Spanish Air Force, 1979-1995: an epidemiological and comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Ejection seats have saved many lives with more than 80% of pilots having survived an ejection. Nevertheless, ejection injuries are seen in all modern air forces. PURPOSE: An epidemiological study has been carried out on the 48 ejections made by the Spanish Air Force (SpAF) from 1979-1995. METHODS: From data facilitated by the Flight Safety Section of the SpAF Staff, by the Flight Safety Section of Squadrons, and from personal reports of pilots who survived ejections a form was created. Relationships between data concerning aeronautical parameters, pilot data and injuries have bee

Cytogenetic investigations in flight personnel.

During long-distance flights at high altitudes flight personnel are exposed to cosmic radiation. In order to determine whether there are biological effects of such low dose radiation exposure in aircrew, chromosomal aberrations were investigated in 59 female cabin attendants and a matched control group of 31 members of station personnel. The mean number of dicentric chromosomes amounts to 1.3 (95% CI 1.0-1.6) per 1000 cells in cabin attendants and 1.4 (95% CI 1.0-1.9) per 1000 cells in controls. In an additional control group of 56 female clerks from Berlin the mean frequency of dicentric chro

Effects of high temperature and noise on erythrocyte membrane ATPase activity in pilots during flight.

Objective. To determine the effect of heat and noise on erythrocyte membrane ATPase activities in pilots during flying. Method. Twenty-four pilots performing bombing for 3 h (45-53 degrees C, 122-97 dB in the cabin) served as the subjects. 21 ground personnel served as control (27 degrees C in the room). Blood samples were taken from both groups before flying (6:00 a.m.), and immediately (12:00 a.m.) and 8 h (8:00 p.m.) after flying. Na(+)-K+ ATPase, and Ca2(+)-Mg2+ ATPase activities in erythrocyte membrane were determined with colorimetry. Result. The Na(+)-K+ ATPase activity in erythrocyte m

Dental health changes in an Australian Defence Force population.

The dental histories of 100 long-term members of the Royal Australian Air Force were obtained from their dental records. Data relating to dental health status, as measured by the DMF indices and the T-Health scores, were tested to determine if there were any correlations present between changes in dental health and certain risk factors which had been identified by previous studies in the General Dental Service in Scotland. These studies had demonstrated positive relationships between the frequency of dental examination and the frequency with which patients changed their dentist, with the amoun

Motion sickness susceptibility and related behavioral characteristics in men and women.

The incidence of motion sickness in a large (N = 3,618) college population was determined by means of a questionnaire. The test-retest reliability coefficient (0.84) suggested that the motion sickness questionnaire (MSQ) for this particular population yields highly consistent information. Significantly greater proportions of men than women had low susceptibility scores and, conversely, significantly greater proportions of women had high susceptibility scores. The relationships between motion sickness susceptibility scores and several behavioral characteristics in men and women were also invest

Using Near Infrared Light to Detect Hypoxia in Retinal Images.

INTRODUCTION: Acute hypoxia poses a serious risk in military aviation because it can lead to impaired performance of safety-critical tasks. Early detection of hypoxia is therefore critical. Oxygen saturation (Spo2) of the retinal blood vessels may serve as a surrogate biomarker for brain hypoxia. This study investigates the feasibility of detecting hypoxia through retinal imaging in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, which does not interfere with the pilot's vision. METHODS: There were 12 subjects who participated in a hypobaric flight simulation to lower systemic Spo2. Retinal images were cap…

Food waste composition, hotspots and sustainability impacts in an airline catering kitchen.

Aviation generates substantial food waste worldwide, yet the focus has mainly been on post-flight waste, leaving upstream production processes in airline catering understudied. This mixed-methods single case study investigated food waste composition, hotspots and drivers in a Swedish airline catering kitchen, and assessed associated environmental (carbon), economic (procurement cost) and social (nutritional) impacts. Over 21 weekdays, waste audits recorded 1.39 tonnes of food waste, largely edible (89%), corresponding to 3.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents, €9250 in procurement costs, and…

Engineering of 2-ketoacid Decarboxylases for Production of Isobutanol and Other Fusel Alcohols in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Isobutanol is a fusel alcohol that can be produced microbially for use as a biofuel or upgraded into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). A key enzyme in the isobutanol biosynthetic pathway is 2-ketoacid decarboxylase (KDC), which irreversibly decarboxylates 2-ketoisovalerate (KIV) to yield isobutyraldehyde. However, many previously characterized KDC enzymes also act promiscuously on other 2-ketoacids, (e.g., pyruvate) to produce a related aldehyde (e.g., acetaldehyde). This unwanted side reaction is especially important when isobutanol is produced in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) becau…

Enlarged Foramen Ovale-Caused Meningeal Bulge in a Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Meningocele results from a defect in the skull base bone, causing meningeal prolapse. Clinical manifestations of meningocele are often nonspecific and prone to misdiagnosis. Inadequate treatment may lead to severe complications, including cerebrospinal fluid leakage, meningitis, or, in rare cases, epilepsy, thereby posing significant risks to patients involved in aerospace operations. Historically, meningocele cases have predominantly been reported in fetuses and infants, with limited analysis and documentation focused on adults, particularly aviation pilots. CASE REPORT: During a…
