Intensive care management and outcome of women with hypertensive diseases of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: The burden of hypertensive diseases on the health care is enormous given to the high population in Sub-Saharan Africa and related disproportionate representation in global maternal mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All women with hypertensive diseases of pregnancy who got admitted into the general ICU of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital between January 2006 and December 2010 were studied. Only the records of women who completed 28 weeks of gestation and were admitted during labour and delivery or puerperium to the ICU were examined. RESULTS: There were 13061 deliveries

Severe morbidity after antiretroviral (ART) initiation: active surveillance in HIV care programs, the IeDEA West Africa collaboration.

BACKGROUND: The causes of severe morbidity in health facilities implementing Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) programmes are poorly documented in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to describe severe morbidity among HIV-infected patients after ART initiation, based on data from an active surveillance system established within a network of specialized care facilities in West African cities. METHODS: Within the International epidemiological Database to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA)--West Africa collaboration, we conducted a prospective, multicenter data collection that involved two facilities in Abidjan, Côte

Strain-specific antibody response to Lassa virus in the local population of west Africa.

BACKGROUND: Lassa virus (LAV) isolates obtained from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Nigeria show a high degree of amino acid difference [Gunther S, Weisner B, Roth A, Grewing T, Asper M, Drosten C, et al. Lassa fever encephalopathy: Lassa virus in cerebrospinal fluid but not in serum. J Infect Dis 2001;184:345-9]. Therefore, three LAV strains from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Nigeria were used as antigens to study the anti-LAV antibody response in 960 serum samples obtained from different regions of west Africa. STUDY DESIGN: The antibody response to LAV was studied both by a standard indirec

Outbreak of dengue fever in Ghana: The emergence of DENV-1 serotype.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus continues to be a public health concern in the tropics and subtropical parts of Africa. Due to the increase of urbanization, climate change and trans-Atlantic trade, the transmitting vector, Aedes aegypti, has become prevalent hence the rapid growth of the disease, globally. In Ghana, there have been sporadic laboratory-confirmed cases of dengue reported over the years through surveillance activities. However, despite the detection of these cases, Ghana had never experienced a major outbreak (unlike its neighboring countries) until July 2024. METHODS

Evaluation of protection induced by immunisation of domestic pigs with deletion mutant African swine fever virus BeninΔMGF by different doses and routes.

A live attenuated African swine fever virus (ASFV) vaccine candidate, produced by deletion of several genes belonging to multi-gene families MGF360 and 505 from virulent Benin 97/1 strain (BeninΔMGF), induces protection in pigs against parental virulent strain. In order to better define the safety and efficacy of this attenuated vaccine candidate and to understand protective mechanisms, we extended previous studies by intramuscular immunisation of pigs with the deletion mutant BeninΔMFG at different doses (102, 103, 104 TCID50), together with intranasal immunisation at the 103 dose. Population-level effect of HSV-2 therapy on the incidence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection increases acquisition and transmission of HIV, but the results of trials measuring the impact of HSV-2 therapy on HIV genital shedding and HIV acquisition are mixed, and the potential impact of HSV-2 therapy on the incidence of HIV at the population level is unknown. METHODS: The effects of episodic and suppressive HSV-2 therapy were simulated using the individual-level model STDSIM fitted to data from Cotonou, Benin (relatively low HIV prevalence) and Kisumu, Kenya (high HIV prevalence). Clinician- and patient-initiated episodic thera

Morbidity, beta S haplotype and alpha-globin gene patterns among sickle cell anemia patients in Kuwait.

Admission records of children with sickle cell anemia (SS), in the two main teaching hospitals in Kuwait, were reviewed for a 1-year period. The haplotypes of 92 beta s chromosomes (from 39 SS, 11 AS, 2 S beta-thalassemia [S beta-thal] and 1 SD individuals) were determined using an allele-specific oligonucleotide (ASO) hybridization technique, while the alpha-globin gene status of 27 SS and 33 AS individuals, i.e. 120 chromosomes, was determined with a combination of polymerase chain reaction and AS techniques. A vasooclusive crisis was the most common (60.0%) cause of hospitalization, followe

Rapid molecular testing or chest X-ray or tuberculin skin testing for household contact assessment of tuberculosis infection: A cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends evaluation of all household contacts (HHC) of index tuberculosis (TB) patients for TB disease (TBD) and TB infection (TBI). Tests to identify TBI and TBD are preferred but can be skipped in persons living with HIV and children <5 years. There is equipoise on the need for these tests in other HHC. METHODS: We conducted a superiority, open label cluster-randomized trial in Benin and Brazil to compare three strategies to evaluate HHC aged 5-50 of persons newly diagnosed with drug susceptible pulmonary TBD: Standard: tuberculin skin testing (TS

Universal coverage of vector control in low- and middle-income countries: Evidence from demographic and health survey data.

OBJECTIVE: To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has estimated the pooled proportion estimate of universal vector control coverage in low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the proportion of universal coverage of vector control in low- and middle-income countries via demographic health survey data. METHODS: We used demographic and health survey data from 31 LMICs from 2015-2024, comprising a weighted sample of 1,830,422 individuals. Pooled estimates were performed via the random effects meta-pro command. Data analysis was performed via STATA versi

Syndromic approach for rapid detection and differentiation of human pathogenic alphaviruses.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of epidemiology, pathogenesis, and public health burden is scarce for many arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Insufficient knowledge is partly attributable to the lack of exhaustive laboratory diagnostics due to resource limitations. Among arboviruses, arthritogenic and encephalitogenic alphaviruses are globally widespread, can cause severe disease, and can co-occur regionally. OBJECTIVES: We developed and validated a multiplexed real-time reverse transcription-PCR assay for the detection of all alphaviruses commonly causing human disease except Barmah Forest virus.
