A metric of maternal prenatal risk drinking predicts neurobehavioral outcomes in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs), including Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, continue to be high-incidence developmental disorders. Detection of patterns of maternal drinking that place fetuses at risk for these disorders is critical to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, but is challenging and often insufficient during pregnancy. Various screens and measures have been used to identify maternal risk drinking but their ability to predict child outcome has been inconsistent. This study hypothesized that a metric of fetal "at-risk" alcohol exposure (ARAE) derived from several indicat

Acute Respiratory Distress in a Hospitalized Patient Revealing Cervical Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH).

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a clinical condition marked by calcification and ossification of primarily ligaments of the spine and peripheral entheses. It predominantly affects older adults, with a prevalence rate of up to 42% in individuals over 65 years. It commonly presents with dysphagia. Stridor secondary to osteophyte compression has rarely been documented. This report discusses a patient who was admitted for alcohol intoxication following binge drinking and subsequently developed respiratory distress and unexplained stridor during hospitalization. He was intubated …

Analysis of the synergy between prenatal ethanol and postnatal adolescent ethanol exposure.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) is associated with long-lasting neurodevelopmental alterations that increase susceptibility to adverse behavioral outcomes, including greater likelihood of binge drinking during adolescence. However, the interactive effects of these two developmental risk factors remain underexplored. The present study investigated the synergistic impact of PEE and adolescent binge-like ethanol exposure on behavioral and ethanol consumption patterns in Wistar rats. Pregnant dams received ethanol (2.0 g/kg/day) or vehicle from gestational days 17-20. Offspring were subjected to i…

Effectiveness of a culturally tailored SMS alcohol intervention for same-sex attracted women: protocol for an RCT.

BACKGROUND: There is a large disparity between alcohol treatment access and prevalence of hazardous drinking among same-sex attracted women (SSAW). Yet, this population typically report low satisfaction with care and a reluctance to attend mainstream health services. Currently, there are few culturally tailored services for SSAW available despite evidence indicating that many feel uncomfortable in mainstream services. This paper describes the protocol of a randomised controlled trial aimed at examining the impact of a culturally sensitive four-week short message service (SMS) alcohol intervent

Sex- and age-specific effects on the development of addiction and compulsive-like drinking in rats.

BACKGROUND: Biological factors are known to influence disease trajectories and treatment effectiveness in alcohol addiction and preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that sex is an important factor influencing disease dynamics in alcohol dependence. Another critical factor is age at first intoxicating drink, which has been identified as a risk factor for later alcohol binging. Preclinical research allows prospective monitoring of rodents throughout the lifespan, providing very detailed information that cannot be acquired in humans. Lifetime monitoring in rodents can be conducted under hig

Bidirectional associations between probable eating disorders and mental health conditions among military service members and veterans.

Although prior research has examined the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) such as binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN) among military personnel, less is known regarding temporal associations between EDs and other mental health conditions. Using longitudinal data from 179 694 service members and veterans from the Millennium Cohort Study, temporal associations between EDs (BN and BED) and mental health conditions (posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and problem drinking) were investigated using a cross-lagged panel model approach. Results indicated consistent

Rethinking Rumination.

The response styles theory (Nolen-Hoeksema, 1991) was proposed to explain the insidious relationship between rumination and depression. We r … on is associated with psychopathologies in addition to depression, including anxiety, binge eating, binge drinking, and self-harm. We discuss the relationships between rumination and worry and between rumination and other coping or emotion-regulation strategies. Finally, we highlight recent research on the distinction between rumination and more adaptive forms o …

CD44 in myeloid cells is a major driver of liver inflammation and injury in alcohol-associated liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is one of the leading causes of severe liver disease with limited pharmacological treatments for alcohol-associated steatohepatitis. CD44, a glycoprotein mainly expressed in immune cells, has been implicated in multiple inflammatory diseases but has never been studied in the ALD context. We therefore studied its contribution to alcohol-associated steatohepatitis development in mice and its expression in patients with ALD. APPROACH AND RESULTS: Here, we report that liver CD44 expression is associated with liver injury and inflammation

Differential risk factors for HIV drug and sex risk-taking among non-treatment-seeking hospitalized injection drug users.

Injection drug users (IDUs) are at increased risk of contracting HIV. From a clinical trial assessing an intervention to enhance the linkage of hospitalized patients to opioid treatment after discharge, we conducted multivariate analysis of baseline data from hospitalized IDUs with a history of opioid dependence (n = 104) to identify differences in factors predicting HIV drug and sex risk behaviors. Factors significantly associated with HIV drug risk were being non-Hispanic Caucasian and recent cocaine use. Being female, binge drinking, and poorer mental health were significantly associated wi…

[Adolescent behavioral disorders].

Adolescence is a period of physical and mental transition between childhood and adulthood, two supposedly quieter periods. Puberty and social pressures generate painful psychic conflicts even for a subject without particular problem. Behavioral disorders of adolescents are numerous and heterogeneous. It is oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, hyperactive disorder with attention deficit which often begin during childhood to evolve negatively in adolescence. Eating disorders, addictive disorders, self-mutilation and scarification are also found. Therapeutic management should be multi

Health risk behaviors among California college students.

Health risk behaviors among students attending 4-year colleges in California were examined. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey for College Students was administered in a two-stage (29 universities, 5,652 students) random sample. All campuses and 3,810 (69%) students participated in the survey. In the 30 days preceding the survey, 36.7% of the students had binged at least once while drinking; 25.3% had driven after consuming alcohol; 32% had ridden in a car with someone who had been drinking; 17.6% had used marijuana; and 6% had carried a knife, gun, or club. More than half of the students who were

Systemic administration of racemic baclofen reduces both acquisition and maintenance of alcohol consumption in male and female mice.

Baclofen is a GABAB receptor agonist with proposed use as a treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). In preclinical studies, racemic baclofen decreases alcohol consumption in both mice and rats; however, there is a significant disparity in the efficacy of the drug across species. We previously demonstrated that baclofen is enantioselective, with the racemic enantiomer successfully reducing binge-like alcohol consumption during Drinking-in-the-Dark (DID) in C57BL/6J (B6) mice, as well as 24-h consumption during two-bottle choice (2BC) preference drinking in replicate 1 High Alcohol Preferring

Limited access ethanol drinking in the dark in adolescent and adult mice.

Adult risk of alcohol dependence increases the younger one first engages in intoxicating consumption. Adolescent mice drink more ethanol than do adults on a gram per kilogram basis, an increase sometimes persisting into adulthood, and this is genotype-dependent. Most studies have used 24 h two-bottle preference, with a choice between ethanol and water. We studied the developmental onset of binge drinking using limited access ethanol drinking in the dark (DID) in male and female mice. To establish age dependence in DID magnitude, we tested HS/Npt mice of 6 ages for DID for 2 weeks, and when the…

Socioeconomic status as an effect modifier of alcohol consumption and harm: analysis of linked cohort data.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related mortality and morbidity are high in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations compared with individuals from a … of Scotland. We obtained baseline demographics and data for alcohol consumption (units per week and binge drinking) from Scottish Health Surveys done in 1995, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. We matched these data to records for deaths, admissions, and prescriptions. The primary outcome was alcohol-attributable admission or death. The relation betwe …

Diallyl disulfide ameliorates ethanol-induced liver steatosis and inflammation by maintaining the fatty acid catabolism and regulating the gut-liver axis.

Diallyl disulfide (DADS) has been suggested to possess hepatoprotection against alcoholic liver disease (ALD) by a couple of pilot studies, … trophils, and proinflammatory polarization of macrophages in mice livers. In addition, chronic-plus-binge drinking induced apparent intestinal mucosa damage and disturbance of gut microbiota, endotoxemia, and activation of hepatic NF-κB signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome, which was inhibited by DADS. In vitro studies using cocultured AML12/J774A.1 cells showed tha …

Characterizing the ruminative process in young adolescents.

Rumination involves repeatedly and passively dwelling on negative feelings and brooding about their causes and consequences. Prior work has found that rumination predicts many forms of psychopathology including anxiety, binge eating, binge drinking, self-injury, and especially depression (Nolen-Hoeksema, Wisco, & Lyubomirsky, 2008 ). In the present study, we attempt to characterize the ruminative process in real time in young adolescents, specifically by examining factors that predict rumination following an interpersonal stressor. A community sample of 105 youth ages 9 to 14 (70% girls; 66% C…

A description of alcohol/drug use and family history of alcoholism among urban American Indians.

The patterns of alcohol consumption, family history of alcoholism, and lifetime and current diagnoses of substance dependence were determined in a sample of American Indians (n = 105) living in Denver. Subjects were recruited through flyers, posters, and advertisements placed in local newspapers, the Denver Indian Center, and Denver Indian Health and Family Services. Subjects were interviewed regarding their education, employment, past and present drug and alcohol use (including frequency/quantity, beverage type, and pattern of intake) and family history of alcoholism. The drug and alcohol sec
