Lateral flow assays (LFA) are widely regarded as the cheapest, fastest, and easiest point-of-care (PoC) tests available. A key advantage is that results can be visually interpreted without the need for specialized equipment, enabling on-site applications while keeping costs low. However, conventional LFAs are typically qualitative, limiting their use to simply detect the presence or absence of analytes. Additional limitations include narrow dynamic ranges and false negatives due to the Hook Effect in sandwich LFAs. In this work, we present a combo lateral flow assay (CLFA) that integrates both

The ability of tendons to transmit forces from muscle to bone is fundamentally attributed to the hierarchical anisotropy of the tissue. After injury, disorganized fibrotic scar tissue forms during the natural healing process, resulting in inferior mechanical properties that often lead to reinjury and limited restoration of function. Therefore, intervention is necessary to facilitate regenerative healing of the tendon. Polymeric biomaterials have historically been used to guide cell behavior, showing promise for the use of topological guidance and cell-mediated matrix remodeling as mechanisms f

Successful tissue remodeling following biomaterial implantation requires adequate tissue integration, which is often compromised by macrophage-mediated foreign body responses and persistent inflammation. Developing biomaterials that actively modulate macrophage behavior via biophysical and biochemical cues holds significant promise for tissue engineering. Here, we present a magneto-actuated polyelectrolyte scaffold platform, where antioxidative lignin@Fe3O4 nanoclusters are noncovalently anchored onto chitosan/chondroitin sulfate scaffolds. Upon exposure to a dynamic magnetic field, the nanocl

In order to develop a promising bio-applicable body-centered-cubic multi-principal element alloy (BCC MPEA) with excellent mechanical and biological properties, Tantalum (Ta) was introduced into TiNbZr alloy based on lattice distortion design, and heterogeneous structure was subsequently constructed. The widespread hetero-structured interfaces alter planar slip mode in recrystallized grains (RGs) via emission and multiplication of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), which generate significant heterogeneous deformation induced (HDI) stress effect. Plentiful subgrains and nano-sized dis

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as osteoporosis, cartilage degeneration, and tendon injuries, are common worldwide and have a significant impact on patients' quality of life. These conditions are frequently associated with aging, trauma, or chronic diseases. They are typically characterized by slow and limited self-repair, particularly in tissues like cartilage and tendons, which exhibit low regenerative potential. Traditional treatment methods, such as implantable scaffolds, often face challenges related to incomplete tissue integration and inadequate adaptation to dynamic biomechanica

Real-time monitoring of human pulse signals is crucial for assessing cardiovascular health and detecting early signs of heart disorders. In this context, wearable systems offer a promising platform for continuous cardiac monitoring; however, existing devices suffer from complex fabrication, low accuracy, and limited body placement flexibility apart from bio-compatibility issues. To address these challenges, a wearable pulse monitoring system based on a flexible optical cavity has been developed and validated. The design employs a flexible polymer for both the cavity and the encapsulating mater

Gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) have been recently attracting interest as potential antimicrobial agents. One of the hurdles hindering quantitative studies in this area is the limited stability of AuNCs in common bacterial growth media (BGMs) with respect to flocculation. In this work, we investigated the stability of AuNCs with sizes from ∼3 to ∼40 nm in three common BGMs: Tryptic soy broth, Luria-Bertani broth, and Mueller Hinton broth. We find that AuNCs prepared by standard methods, with citrate or citrate/tannic acid passivation, irreversibly flocculate in all studied BGMs. However, when the fr

Chronic venous disease (CVD) is a prevalent condition affecting the venous system of the lower limbs, characterized by venous hypertension and regurgitation resulting from congenital or acquired venous valve insufficiency. The global morbidity of CVD is as high as 69.94%. Prosthetic venous valve replacement provides a new therapeutic option. However, to mimic natural venous valves, the leaflets of prosthetic venous valves need to be as thin as ~200 μm, and better resistance to thrombosis is required due to the physiological characteristics of the venous system. Identifying suitable materials f

Biomaterials are engineered to interact with biological systems for treating, enhancing, or replacing organs, tissues, or functions. Bioactive glasses show strong potential in bone regeneration, drug delivery, soft tissue repair, and wound healing. So, numerous attempts have been made to fabricate transparent glasses within the glassy composition (45-x)SrO - 45SiO2 - 10K2O - xAl2O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 6 mol%) for biomedical applications. X-ray Diffractometer was performed and confirmed the amorphous behaviour of the sintered glasses, indicating a short-range order structure. Further, the density (ρ) of t

A syndiotactic poly(substituted methylene) (st-PM) featuring (2-methoxyethoxy)carbonyl side chains (st-PMECM) exhibited considerably superior antithrombogenicity compared to a typical conventional antithrombogenic polyacrylate comprising the same side chain (i.e., poly(2-methoxyethyl acrylate); PMEA). The number of adherent platelets on the surface of the st-PMECM films was 0.8 × 103 mm-2, which was one-fourth of that on the PMEA films (3.2 × 103 mm-2), and 75% of these platelets were in the lowest activation state. During the platelet adhesion test, the st-PMECM films maintained surface wetta

Dental caries is a widespread and contagious chronic infectious condition. As the principal cariogenic bacterium involved in dental caries, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) possesses cariogenicity-related properties, including acidogenicity, aciduricity, and exopolysaccharide (EPS) synthesis. Our previously designed peptide, P-113-DPS, has demonstrated antibacterial effects on S. mutans; however, its detailed impact on its cariogenic virulence factors remains unclear. This study focused on assessing changes in these factors following treatment with P-113-DPS. Furthermore, it aimed to investiga

Spider silk biomaterials have generated significant interest due to their high strength, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, the complex multiscale structure of silk fibers creates difficulties in investigating the relationship between the structure and mechanical properties in silks. Previous work has shown that silks at the focus of an ultrafast laser produce a significant second harmonic generation (SHG) signal. This presents an exciting opportunity since polarization-resolved SHG microscopy (PSHG) is a technique that has shown high sensitivity local molecular structure and org

Photopolymerization-based 3D printing is widely used in dental manufacturing due to its precision and customizability. However, printed resin specimens require effective post-washing to remove unpolymerized resin, which is a critical step that affects both their mechanical properties and biocompatibility. A conventional ultrasonic bath may fail to achieve effective post-washing due to solvent contamination by the residual resin, resulting in incomplete cleaning and possible redeposition. This study investigated the use of a Soxhlet apparatus as an innovative post-washing method. By continuousl

Messenger RNA (mRNA) has proven to be an effective vaccine agent against unexpected pandemics, offering the advantage of rapidly producing customized therapeutics targeting specific pathogens. However, undesired byproducts, such as double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), generated during in vitro transcription (IVT) reactions may impede translation efficiency and trigger inflammatory cytokines in cells after mRNA uptake. In this study, we developed a facile method using PEGylated polystyrene resins that were further surface-modified with graphene oxide (GO@PEG-PS) for the removal of dsRNA from IVT mRNA.
