Organochlorine pesticide bioaccumulation in wild Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) fat tissues: Environmental influences on changing residue levels and contaminant profiles.

Biologically significant concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) continue to be reported in wildlife populations and are of particular concern in species that occupy the highest trophic levels. Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) are important apex predators occurring throughout much of tropical and subtropical sub-Saharan Africa, where they inhabit estuarine and freshwater habitats often impacted by contamination. In this study we examined pesticide residue accumulation in fat tissue from Nile crocodiles at Lake St Lucia, South Africa, where historically large quantities of OCPs

Precision nutrition in Asian populations: a Multi-omics review of mechanisms, biomarkers, and implementation pathways.

The rapid expansion of omics technologies has created new opportunities to understand inter-individual variations in metabolic responses to diet. Such advances are particularly relevant for Asian populations, which exhibit distinct metabolic characteristics, including increased visceral adiposity, reduced β-cell reserves, and heightened susceptibility to type 2 diabetes at lower BMI levels, compared to Western populations. This review synthesizes the current evidence on metabolomic and genomic biomarkers associated with metabolic health in Asians and outlines the mechanistic pathways through w

Bone Health in Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects approximately 1% of the global population and is the most common inflammatory arthritis in adults. RA is well established as a significant risk factor for secondary osteoporosis (OP). Bone loss in RA occurs at three anatomically distinct levels: periarticular osteopenia, marginal erosions at the joint periphery, and generalised systemic OP. Understanding the complex mechanism underlying osteoclast-mediated bone loss in RA is essential for the development of targeted interventions, while identification of individuals at risk of OP and fractur

Multiplex nodal modularity: A novel network metric for the regional analysis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment during a working memory binding task.

Modularity is a well-established concept for assessing community structures in various single and multi-layer networks, including those in biological and social domains. Brain networks are known to exhibit community structure at a variety of scales-local, meso, and global scale. However, modularity, while useful in describing mesoscale brain organization, is limited as a metric to a global scale describing the overall strength of community structure. This approach, while valuable, overlooks important variations in community structure at node level. To address this limitation, we extended modul

Captivity-associated variations in fecal testosterone and progesterone metabolite concentrations in mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella).

BACKGROUND: Mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella) is a medium-sized antelope native to arid regions that is currently listed as an endangered species. There are only two known populations of mountain gazelles worldwide, one of which is in Hatay (Türkiye). In this study, we investigated the differences in the fecal concentrations of testosterone and progesterone metabolites in free-ranging and captive mountain gazelle. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from the ground in the Hatay Mountain Gazelle Wildlife Development Area, located in Hatay Province (Türkiye) during each season of the year. I

Glucose Targets Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring Metrics in Older Adults With Diabetes: Are We There Yet?

The older population is increasing worldwide and up to 30% of older adults have diabetes. Older adults with diabetes are at risk of glucose-related acute and chronic complications. Recently, mostly in type 1 diabetes (T1D), continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have proven beneficial in improving time in range (TIR glucose, 70-180 mg/dL or glucose 3.9-10 mmol/L), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and in lowering hypoglycemia (time below range [TBR] glucose <70 mg/dL or glucose <3.9 mmol/L). The international consensus group formulated CGM glycemic targets relating to older adults with diabete

The Pathophysiology of Labor Dystocia: Theme with Variations.

Abnormally prolonged labor, or labor dystocia, is a common complication of parturition. It is the indication for about half of unplanned cesarean deliveries in low-risk nulliparous women. Reducing the rate of unplanned cesarean birth in the USA has been a public health priority over the last two decades with limited success. Labor dystocia is a complex disorder due to multiple causes with a common clinical outcome of slow cervical dilation and fetal descent. A better understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms of labor dystocia could lead to new clinical opportunities to increase the rate

Validation of quantitative backscattered electron imaging for the measurement of mineral density distribution in human bone biopsies.

The measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) using X-rays is usually employed to monitor the mineral content in a given portion of bone. However, this method cannot differentiate between changes in bone volume or in degree of mineralization of the bone matrix. In contrast to BMD, bone mineral density distribution (BMDD), as measured on bone sections by quantitative backscattered electron imaging (qBEI), is able to distinguish differences in the degree of mineralization. For routine clinical research, we have validated the method of calibration and standardization of the backscattered electron

Retrospective cohort study and biobanking of patients treated for hemangioma in childhood - telomeres as biomarker of aging and radiation exposure.

PURPOSE: Cohorts allowing joint epidemiological and biological analyses are essential for radiation risk assessment. The French Hemangioma Cohort (FHC), studied within the European project EpiRadBio, is one of the rare cohorts suitable for studying the effect of low dose radiation exposure (<100 mGy at organs), with a long-term follow-up. This highly homogeneous cohort consists of healthy individuals belonging to a normal population, except for the presence of skin hemangioma (age at exposure: between 6 months and 3 years of age). Published epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the ri

The polymer physics and chemistry of microbial cell attachment and adhesion.

The attachment of microbial cells to solid substrata is a primary ecological strategy for the survival of species and the development of specific activity and function within communities. An hypothesis arising from a biological sciences perspective may be stated as follows: The attachment of microbes to interfaces is controlled by the macromolecular structure of the cell wall and the functional genes that are induced for its biological synthesis. Following logically from this is the view that diverse attached cell behaviour is mediated by the physical and chemical interactions of these macromo

Murine strain variation in the natural killer cell and proliferative responses to the immunostimulatory compound 7-allyl-8-oxoguanosine: role of cytokines.

7-Allyl-8-oxoguanosine (loxoribine) is a di-substituted guanine ribonucleoside which has been shown previously to enhance murine NK activity, B lymphocyte proliferation, and antibody synthesis. In this study we examined the relationship among enhancement of NK activity, proliferation, and cytokine synthesis in the responses of different strains of mice to loxoribine to provide insight into the role of cytokines in these biological activities. The NK response of mice was enhanced both in vitro and in vivo in all strains tested with the exception of the NK-deficient beige (BgBg) mouse. However,

Vitamin D receptor FokI polymorphism preferentially modulates cognitive vulnerability in Parkinson's disease: Evidence from an Indian cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and neuroinflammation are emerging as key contributors in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). Characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms, PD is marked by dopaminergic neuronal loss and α-synuclein accumulation. VD exerts neuroprotective effects by preserving dopaminergic neurons, enhancing neurotransmission, and reducing neuroinflammation. Its biological activity is primarily mediated through the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR), which functions as a transcription factor upon activation. This study investigates ethnic variability of two imp

Variability in the Risk of Malignancy in Bethesda IV Thyroid Nodules: Results from the EUROCRINE Surgical Registry.

Background/Objectives: The management of Bethesda IV (follicular neoplasm) thyroid nodules remains controversial, in part due to wide variation in the reported risk of malignancy (ROM-BIV). Understanding this variability is essential for documenting systemic inconsistencies in ROM-BIV estimates and for developing more consistent risk-stratification strategies. This study aimed to quantify ROM-BIV variability across European centers and conduct an exploratory analysis of the trade-offs associated with hypothetical risk-based thresholds within a surgically selected cohort. Methods: We analyzed d

High throughput genotyping of structural variations in a complex plant genome using an original Affymetrix® axiom® array.

BACKGROUND: Insertions/deletions (InDels) and more specifically presence/absence variations (PAVs) are pervasive in several species and have strong functional and phenotypic effect by removing or drastically modifying genes. Genotyping of such variants on large panels remains poorly addressed, while necessary for approaches such as association mapping or genomic selection. RESULTS: We have developed, as a proof of concept, a new high-throughput and affordable approach to genotype InDels. We first identified 141,000 InDels by aligning reads from the B73 line against the genome of three tempera

TAS2R38 bitter taste genetics, dietary vitamin C, and both natural and synthetic dietary folic acid predict folate status, a key micronutrient in the pathoaetiology of adenomatous polyps.

Taste perception may influence dietary preferences and nutrient intakes contributing to diet-related disease susceptibility. This study examined bitter taste genetics and whether variation in the TAS2R38 gene at three polymorphic loci (A49P, V262A and I296V) could alter dietary and systemic folate levels and dietary vitamin C intake, and whether a nutrigenetic circuit existed that might link bitter taste, folate/antioxidant status and risk for a colonic adenomatous polyp. TAS2R38 diplotype predicted bitter taste (PROP) phenotype (p value <0.00001) and red cell folate status (p=0.0179) consiste
