Molecular identification, risk factor assessment, and phylogenetic analysis of tick-borne pathogens in symptomatic and asymptomatic cattle from South-Eastern Iran.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) represent a substantial threat to cattle globally, exerting adverse impacts on production, health, and economic viability. This study delves into the prevalence and implications of TTBPs in cattle sourced from resource-limited smallholder livestock farms situated in southeastern Iran, proximate to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Blood and tick specimens were systematically collected from a cohort of 230 cattle, comprising 150 asymptomatic and 80 symptomatic individuals. Genomic DNA isolated from blood samples underwent rigorous examination for the presence of key TBPs, in

Prospective study investigating transplacental transmission of equine piroplasmosis in thoroughbred foals in Trinidad.

Equine piroplasmosis caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi is endemic in Trinidad and Tobago. Transmission occurs by ticks of the family Ixodidae. T. equi can also be transmitted transplacentally; however transplacental transmission of B. caballi is unknown. This study aims to investigate transplacental transmission of equine piroplasmosis from thoroughbred mares naturally infected via the tick vector. Whole blood and serum samples were collected from 117 mares in the fifth month of pregnancy. Blood samples were also collected from each of their foals (89 in total) within the first 36h

Molecular detection and distribution of piroplasms and Anaplasma species and their co-infections in cattle from three Egyptian governorates.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), including piroplasmosis and anaplasmosis, are globally distributed and pose significant threats to cattle. This study investigated the prevalence, co-infections, and risk factors of bovine piroplasmosis and anaplasmosis in three Egyptian governorates, Beni-Suef, Al-Faiyum, and Al-Minya, over a one year period. A total of 601 cattle blood samples were screened for hemopathogens using microscopic examination, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and nucleotide sequences analysis. Risk factors were analyzed using the chi-square (χ2) test (P < 0.05). Hemopathogens were dete

A study of ticks and tick-borne livestock pathogens in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: As obligate blood-feeding arthropods, ticks transmit pathogens to humans and domestic animals more often than other arthropod vectors. Livestock farming plays a vital role in the rural economy of Pakistan, and tick infestation causes serious problems with it. However, research on tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens has rarely been conducted in Pakistan. In this study, a systematic investigation of the tick species infesting livestock in different ecological regions of Pakistan was conducted to determine the microbiome and pathobiome diversity in the indigenous ticks. Efficient B cell responses to Borrelia hermsii infection depend on BAFF and BAFFR but not TACI.

T cell-independent antibody responses develop rapidly, within 3 to 4 days, and are critical for preventing blood-borne pathogens from evolving into life-threatening infections. The interaction of BAFF, also known as BLyS, with its receptors BAFFR and TACI on B cells is critical for B cell homeostasis and function. Using a synthetic polysaccharide antigen, it has previously been shown that TACI is critical for T cell-independent antibody responses. To examine the role of BAFFR and TACI in T cell-independent antibody responses to an active infection, we utilized the Borrelia hermsii infection sy…

Serologic evidence of selected vector-borne pathogens in non-owned dogs in the southeast US.

Vector-borne pathogens (VBP) associated with ectoparasitism are of concern for animal health, and there are many gaps in surveillance and reporting data. The purpose of this study was to test for four VBPs in a subset of non-owned dogs from county humane societies in Alabama and Georgia that were admitted to the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine Hoerlein Spay/Neuter Program for health exams and routine procedures, including bloodwork and testing with the 4Dx® SNAP® Plus (IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Westbrook, Maine). Visualized ectoparasites were noted and preserved for identifica

A snapshot of the microbiome of blood and ticks of captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) from selected conservation facilities in South Africa.

Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining across their native range due to anthropogenic pressures. To support conservation, breeding programs have been established in South Africa and globally. However, captivity introduces new ecological challenges, including increased exposure to ticks and tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). Translocation of cheetahs may further facilitate the spread of pathogens, potentially affecting animal health and introducing infections into new environments. Despite these risks, little is known about the blood and

Screening blood-fed mosquitoes for the diagnosis of filarioid helminths and avian malaria.

BACKGROUND: Both Dirofilaria repens and recently D. immitis are known to be endemic in Hungary. As one of several recent cases, the fatal case of a dog infested with D. immitis in Szeged, Southern Hungary, received attention from the media. Hence it was decided to catch mosquitoes in the garden where the dog lived to screen for filarioid helminths and Plasmodium spp. using molecular tools. METHODS: Mosquitoes were caught in Szeged, in the garden where the infected dog was kept, in July 2013 with M-360 electric mosquito traps and were stored in ethanol until further procedure. Female mosquitoe

Trained Immunity, BCG and SARS-CoV-2 General Outline and Possible Management in COVID-19.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has been in use for over 100 years. It protects against severe, blood-borne forms of tuberculosis. Observations indicate that it also increases immunity against other diseases. The mechanism responsible for this is trained immunity, an increased response of non-specific immune cells in repeated contact with a pathogen, not necessarily of the same species. In the following review, we present the current state of knowledge on the molecular mechanisms responsible for this process. We also seek to identify the challenges facing science in this area and co

Phylogenetic analysis of hepatitis C virus isolates indicates a unique pattern of endemic infection in Cameroon.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a blood-borne pathogen that poses a significant threat to public health worldwide. The genetic diversity and distribution of HCV genotypes in non-Western countries, particularly subSaharan Africa, is poorly documented. This study reports a phylogenetic analysis of core and NS5B gene sequences of 37 HCV strains sampled in Cameroon. A high level of genetic diversity of both genotypes 1 and 4 was found, indicating a unique pattern of long-term HCV infection that has not been observed elsewhere. These results lead to the hypothesis that these HCV genotypes originated and
