Effects of Bacillus subtilis BS-Z15 on Intestinal Microbiota Structure and Body Weight Gain in Mice.

In our previous study, we identified a metabolite of Bacillus subtilis BS-Z15 (a strain with probiotic characteristics) that could improve immunity in mice. In the present study, we examined the effects of B. subtilis BS-Z15 and its metabolites on body weight gain and the intestinal microbiota of mice. Sixty 25-day-old male Kunming white mice were selected and randomly divided into four groups: control group (A), daily saline gavage; B. subtilis-treated group (B), single gavage (1 × 109 CFU/time/animal/day); group D, 14 consecutive gavages (1 × 109 CFU/time/animal/day); and B. subtilis metabol…

Whole Body Ip6k1 Deletion Protects Mice from Age-Induced Weight Gain, Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Dysfunction.

(1) Background: We previously demonstrated that disruption of IP6K1 improves metabolism, protecting mice from high-fat diet-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis. Age-induced metabolic dysfunction is a major risk factor for metabolic diseases. The involvement of IP6K1 in this process is unknown. (2) Methods: Here, we compared body and fat mass, insulin sensitivity, energy expenditure and serum-, adipose tissue- and liver-metabolic parameters of chow-fed, aged, wild type (aWT) and whole body Ip6k1 knockout (aKO) mice. (3) Results: IP6K1 w

Plasmalogen Inhibits Body Weight Gain by Activating Brown Adipose Tissue and Improving White Adipose Tissue Metabolism.

Plasmalogen, a phospholipid, exhibits preventive and therapeutic effects on dementia. Phospholipids improve fat metabolism, but it is unknown whether plasmalogen has an effect on fat metabolism. In this study, the effects of plasmalogen were determined by administering plasmalogen to KK-Ay mice. As a result, weight gain was significantly suppressed in the plasmalogen-treated group compared with the control group from 7 wk after the start of administration. In addition, plasmalogen administration increased uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in brown adipose tissue. The effect is thought to

Impact of body mass index in patulous Eustachian tube: Does rapid weight loss influence symptom improvement?

OBJECTIVES: Weight loss has been proposed as risk factor for patulous Eustachian tube (PET), however, it has not been well-characterized how this subpopulation responds to standard treatments. This study aimed to evaluate PET symptom improvement in the setting of and absence of rapid weight loss. METHODS: This retrospective case series included patients diagnosed with PET at an academic institution. Demographic characteristics, medical comorbidities, presenting symptoms, treatment, and outcomes of symptom improvement were reviewed. Univariate analysis modeled the likelihood of symptom improve

Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain trajectory, and risk of adverse perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationships of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) trajectory with adverse perinatal outcomes (APOs). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in China, and 12 855 women who had a singleton birth were included. The WHO classification categorized pre-pregnancy BMI, and five GWG trajectories were identified using the latent class growth model. RESULTS: The adjusted odds ratios for the risks of cesarean delivery, preterm birth, and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infant were significantly higher in women with whoe were ov

Energy Expenditure, Protein Oxidation and Body Composition in a Cohort of Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

UNLABELLED: The nutritional management of preterm infants is a critical point of care, especially because of the increased risk of developing extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR), which is associated with worsened health outcomes. Energy requirements in preterm infants are simply estimated, so the measurement of resting energy expenditure (REE) should be a key point in the nutritional evaluation of preterm infants. Although predictive formulae are available, it is well known that they are imprecise. The aim of our study was the evaluation of REE and protein oxidation (Ox) in very low birth w

Intragastric satiety-inducing device reduces food intake and suppresses body weight gain in a rodent model.

BACKGROUND: An intragastric satiety-inducing device (ISD) (Full Sense Device; Baker, Foote, Kemmeter, Walburn, LLC, Grand Rapids, MI) is a novel weight-loss device, which may induce satiety by applying continuous pressure on the gastric cardia. This study investigated the effect of the ISD on food intake and body weight gain in a rodent model. METHODS: Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats (weight, 250-300 g) were randomly divided into four groups of eight individuals. Single-disk (SD) and double-disk (DD) group animals underwent peroral placement of a single- or double-disk ISD, respectively, …

Association between low body weight and cytochrome P-450 enzyme activity in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Very little is known to which extent severe underweight could affect cytochrome P-450 (CYP) enzyme activity. In this study, 24 patients with anorexia nervosa at two occasions ingested single oral doses of five test drugs known to be metabolized by CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and CYP3A4, respectively. A mixed model analysis was used to evaluate the effect of changes in body mass index (BMI) on the metabolic activities of these enzymes. The primary end point was the change in drug/metabolite ratio of each of the test drugs per kg/m2 change in BMI. With increasing BMI, the metabolic activity

Constitutive DPP4 activity, inflammation, and microvascular reactivity in subjects with excess body weight and without diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with diabetes, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) inhibition is associated with attenuation of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Here, we investigated the associations between constitutive DPP4 activity, inflammatory biomarkers, and microvascular reactivity in subjects with excess body weight without diabetes. METHODS: Forty subjects of BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2 and without diabetes were cross-sectionally evaluated. We assessed microvascular blood flow and vasomotion by laser Doppler flowmetry, and measured at baseline, 30, and 60 min after a standardized meal: DPP4 activity,…

Body temperatures of very low birth weight infants on admission to a neonatal intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE: Hypothermia occurs frequently in the first minutes after birth in preterm infants. Hyperthermia also occurs, often as a consequence of efforts to provide thermal support. Both hypothermia and hyperthermia are potentially harmful. Our objective was to examine the distribution of admission temperatures of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, the effect of gestational age on admission temperatures, and the time required for correction of low temperatures. METHODS: Admission axillary temperatures were retrieved from the medical records for all VLBW infants born in our hospital during

Birth weight and body mass index z-score in childhood brain tumors: A cross-sectional study.

Children with brain tumors (CBT) are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes compared to the general population, in which birth weight is a risk factor for these diseases. However, this is not known in CBT. The primary aim of this study was to explore the association between birth weight and body mass measures in CBT, compared to non-cancer controls. This is a secondary data analysis using cross-sectional data from the CanDECIDE study (n = 78 CBT and n = 133 non-cancer controls). Age, sex, and birth weight (grams) were self-reported, and confirmed through examination of th

Low body weight and clinical outcomes in acute coronary syndrome patients: results of the ACHILLES Registry.

BACKGROUND: Being overweight increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. However, among high-body-weight patients with established acute coronary syndrome (ACS) this evidence is not clear. In this scenario, a low body weight (LBW) has been proposed to confer higher prognostic risk and higher bleeding risk with new P2Y12 inhibitors. AIMS: We aimed to examine differences in mortality, catheterizations/revascularizations, antiplatelet therapy and ischemic/bleeding adverse events between ACS patients with LBW. METHODS: This is a multicenter registry involving 1576 consecutive AC…

Distinguishing emotional coregulation from codysregulation: an investigation of emotional dynamics and body weight in romantic couples.

Well-regulated emotions, both within people and between relationship partners, play a key role in facilitating health and well-being. The present study examined 39 heterosexual couples' joint weight status (both partners are healthy-weight, both overweight, 1 healthy-weight, and 1 overweight) as a predictor of 2 interpersonal emotional patterns during a discussion of their shared lifestyle choices. The first pattern, coregulation, is one in which partners' coupled emotions show a dampening pattern over time and ultimately return to homeostatic levels. The second, codysregulation, is one in whi

Pulmonary delivery of anorectic oxyntomodulin in rats: food intake suppression, reduced body weight gain and pharmacokinetics.

BACKGROUND: Oxyntomodulin (OXM1-37) is an anorectic gut-secreting peptide with a promise to treat obesity, but its needle-free delivery has yet to be successful. RESULTS: Pulmonary delivery of OXM1-37, but not its C-terminal octapeptides, caused dose-related, transient 4-6 h food intake suppression in rats. At 0.5 mg/kg, its 30-38% food intake suppression led to 46% reduction in body weight gain by day 8. Its lung absorption was fast, elevating the systemic level rapidly, yet the bioavailability was low at 13%. In the brain, twofold neuronal c-fos activation was seen in the hypothalamus arcua…

Partial sleep deprivation by environmental noise increases food intake and body weight in obesity-resistant rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep restriction in humans increases risk for obesity, but previous rodent studies show weight loss following sleep deprivation, possibly due to stressful methods used to prevent sleep. Obesity-resistant (OR) rats exhibit consolidated-sleep and resistance to weight gain. It was hypothesized that sleep disruption by a less-stressful method would increase body weight, and the effect of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on body weight in OR and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats was examined. DESIGN AND METHODS: OR and SD rats (n = 12/group) were implanted with transmitters to record sleep/wake.…
