Locomotor Recovery in Spinal Cord Injury Can Be Assessed Using Weight-Bearing.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can result in partial or full paralysis, depending on the level and completeness of injury. Locomotor function is often used as a measure of recovery and treatment outcomes. The Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scale and Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) are gold standards used in rodent SCI studies to evaluate changes in locomotor recovery. However, these scoring systems are observer-dependent measures that may be affected by the presence of an experimenter, particularly in studies where blinding is difficult. Observer-independent methods measure outcomes without an operator prese

Endurance training and bone loss in calcium-deficient and ovariectomized rats.

We examined interactions among physical training, estrogen deficiency, and calcium deficiency with respect to the maintenance of femoral bone in five groups of 10 to 11-month-old female Fischer 344 rats: sedentary intact, sedentary ovariectomized, trained intact, trained ovariectomized, and control. All rats, except controls, were maintained on a calcium-deficient diet (0.02%) for 8 weeks, and had lower femoral weight, density, ash weight, and ash weight/volume than control rats. Ovariectomy combined with calcium deficiency decreased bone density more than did calcium deficiency alone. Treadmi

Effects of indulgent food snacking, with and without exercise training, on body weight, fat mass, and cardiometabolic risk markers in overweight and obese men.

We hypothesized that exercise training would prevent gains in body weight and body fat, and worsening of cardiometabolic risk markers, during a 4-week period of indulgent food snacking in overweight/obese men. Twenty-eight physically inactive men (ages 19-47 yr) with body mass index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 consumed 48 donuts (2/day, 6 days/week; ~14,500 kcal total) for 4 weeks while maintaining habitual diet. Men were randomly assigned to control (n = 9), moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT; n = 9), or high-intensity interval training (HIIT; n = 10). Exercise training occurred 4 days/week, ~2

Blunted inflammatory response is associated with a lower response to a weight loss dietary intervention in liver recipients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, and adipose tissue inflammation is required for fatty tissue remodeling. Interestingly, immunosuppressed patients, as liver transplant recipients, often experience excessive weight gain. We investigated how liver recipients' inflammatory response affects body weight loss induced by dietary treatment. METHODS: Overweight liver recipients were paired with non-transplanted subjects to compare their peripheral immune profiles. RESULTS: Transplanted patients had similar profiles of peripheral blood mononuclear cells com

Contrasting short- and long-term effects of weight loss on lipoprotein levels.

The short- and long-term effects of weight loss on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were examined in 42 women who completed a 14-session behavioral weight-loss program. Lipid values were determined from samples taken before treatment, after treatment, and at six-month follow-up. There were significant changes in plasma lipid levels, but the short- and long-term effects differed. Both total and LDL cholesterol levels decreased during treatment and remained lower at follow-up. However, HDL cholesterol level and the HDL/LDL ratio did not change d

Changes in waist circumference and risk of all-cause and CVD mortality: results from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer in Norfolk (EPIC-Norfolk) cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Measures of abdominal adiposity are strongly associated with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, data are limited and conflicting regarding the consequences of changes in body fat distribution. The main aims of this paper are to investigate the association between changes in waist circumference (WC) and all-cause and CVD mortality and to examine these changes in relation to concurrent changes in weight. METHODS: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-Norfolk) study recruited 25,639 participants between 1993 and 1997, aged

Metabolic and circadian bioenergetic alterations following perfluorooctanoic acid exposure and high-fat diet in female C57BL/6 mice.

Exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) elicits changes in various metabolic responses but few studies have evaluated whole-body metabolic changes. This study compared whole-body bioenergetics in adult female C57BL/6 mice orally dosed with 0 or 7.5 mg/kg perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or fed a 60% high fat diet (HFD) for 24 h or 15 d. After 24 h, HFD mice showed increased oxygen consumption (VO2) and reduced active-phase respiratory exchange ratio (RER), indicating early lipid utilization. After 15 d, PFOA-exposed mice exhibited decreased resting RER and suppressed active VO2, su

Inhibition of olanzapine-induced weight gain by the retinoid analog AM-80.

INTRODUCTION: Weight gain and metabolic abnormalities are common side effects of antipsychotic treatment. Retinoids have been suggested as promising substances to suppress obesity. This study has investigated the effects of a retinoid agonist AM-80 on olanzapine-induced weight gain and metabolic changes in rats. METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks) were treated with AM-80 (1 mg/kg/day, subcutaneously) and/or olanzapine (4 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneally) for 21 days. Body weight and food/water intake were measured daily. The open field (OFT) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) tests were done

Body weight, anorexia, and undernutrition in older people.

Ideal body weight for maximum life expectancy increases with advancing age. Older people, however, tend to weigh less than younger adults, and old age is also associated with a tendency to lose weight. Weight loss in older people is associated with adverse outcomes, particularly if unintentional, and initial body weight is low. When older people lose weight, more of the tissue lost is lean tissue (mainly skeletal muscle) than in younger people. When excessive, the loss of lean muscle tissue results in sarcopenia, which is associated with poor health outcomes. Unintentional weight loss in older

Vernodalin Alleviates Cardiotoxicity and Inflammation in Isoproterenol-Mediated Myocardial Infarction through NF-κB/AMPK Signaling Pathways in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is the foremost cause of mortality in cardiovascular diseases. MI ultimately exacerbates cardiotoxicity due to the release of toxicity biomarkers and inflammatory infiltration. AIM: Vernodalin (VN) is a renowned cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactone that possesses antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. The cardioprotective mechanism of VN remains concealed. Hence, we explored the cardioprotective efficacy of VN on isoproterenol (ISO)- mediated MI and analyzed its underlying mechanism. METHODS: To investigate the cardioprotective potential

Annual Average Changes in Adult Obesity as a Risk Factor for Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Large-Scale Case-Control Study.

We evaluated the association between weight change in middle-aged adults and papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) based on a large-scale case-control study. Our study included data from 1551 PTC patients (19.3% men and 80.7% women) who underwent thyroidectomy at the 3 general hospitals in Korea and 15,510 individually matched control subjects. The subjects' weight history, epidemiologic information, and tumor characteristics confirmed after thyroidectomy were analyzed. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were determined for the annual average changes in weight and obesity indica

Spinal cord injury affects the interplay between visual and sensorimotor representations of the body.

The brain integrates multiple sensory inputs, including somatosensory and visual inputs, to produce a representation of the body. Spinal cord injury (SCI) interrupts the communication between brain and body and the effects of this deafferentation on body representation are poorly understood. We investigated whether the relative weight of somatosensory and visual frames of reference for body representation is altered in individuals with incomplete or complete SCI (affecting lower limbs' somatosensation), with respect to controls. To study the influence of afferent somatosensory information on b

Weight loss in Huntington disease increases with higher CAG repeat number.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington disease (HD) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded number of CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene. A hallmark of HD is unintended weight loss, the cause of which is unknown. In order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of weight loss in HD, we studied its relation to other disease characteristics including motor, cognitive, and behavioral disturbances and CAG repeat number. METHODS: In 517 patients with early stage HD, we applied mixed-effects model analyses to correlate weight changes over 3 years to CAG repeat number and various components o

Effect of pramlintide on weight in overweight and obese insulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients.

OBJECTIVE: Several randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials in insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes have shown that adjunctive therapy with pramlintide reduces hemoglobin (Hb)A1c with concomitant weight loss. This analysis further characterizes the weight-lowering effect of pramlintide in this patient population. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This pooled post hoc analysis of two long-term trials included all patients who were overweight/obese at baseline (BMI > 25 kg/m2), and who were treated with either 120 microg pramlintide BID (n = 254; HbA1c 9.2%; weight, 96.1 kg)

Natural history and predictors of obesity after orthotopic heart transplantation.

Excessive weight gain resulting in obesity is commonly seen after orthotopic heart transplantation. Obesity increases the risk for the development of many significant health problems and the associated morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to define the occurrence, magnitude, and predictors of overweight/obesity in this group. We followed 47 consecutive patients for 1 year after orthotopic heart transplantation for changes in weight. Weight gain from baseline was significant at months 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, with significant weight increments between each measurement interval (p <

[Surgical options for reducing body weight].

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. Sixty-two percent of the Hungarian adult population has overweight and 27% is morbidly obese and, therefore, it is a significant interest to treat this condition. The authors review the diagnosis and the associated diseases of morbid obesity. The initial enthusiasm with the gastric band has settled now, as the long-term outcome showed only very limited reduction in the excess body weight and
