Age-dependent expression and heritability of owner-reported dermatological symptoms in Labrador retrievers: Implications for breeding strategies.

OBJECTIVES: In decentralised breeding programmes, consistent health monitoring can be challenging, yet accurate phenotyping is essential for informed selection. This study evaluated whether a concise owner-based online survey could capture clinically relevant dermatologic signs in a Belgian assistance-dog breeding population, and whether the resulting phenotypes could support breeding decisions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Survey data were collected between June 2024 and October 2025 from 223 Labrador retrievers (median age 2.1 years, range 11 months to 8 years). Owners reported the frequency of o…

Nano-encapsulated vitamin D3 supplementation effects on reproductive performance, egg quality, and blood indexes in breeding pigeons.

Calcium homeostasis is indispensable for optimal egg production in poultry, and vitamin D3 (VD3) plays a pivotal role in regulating calcium metabolism and maintaining overall reproductive health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of nano-encapsulated VD3 supplementation in drinking water on reproductive performance, egg quality, endocrine profiles, and antioxidant capacity of breeding White King pigeons. A total of 216 three-year-old pigeon pairs were randomly allocated into four groups, receiving 0, 1,000, 2,000, or 4,000 IU/L of nano-encapsulated VD3 for 13 weeks. The results demonstr…

Characterization of breeding success and litter characteristics in the New Mexico Alcohol Research Center moderate drinking paradigm.

Rodent models of prenatal alcohol exposure are a powerful tool for studying causal factors of prenatal exposure effects. Under the New Mexico Alcohol Research Center, we combined a voluntary drinking-in-the-dark (DID) paradigm with a Volumetric Drinking Monitor (VDM) system to quantify maternal ethanol (EtOH) intake, drinking duration, and drinking patterns throughout gestation and determined whether these variables altered breeding success or early offspring development. Female C57BL/6J mice received daily 2-h access to either 20% EtOH or water using the VDM system. Following a two-week accli…

Multivariate and imaging methods to classify cold tolerance of sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids) cultivars and breeding clones.

Tolerance against winter freeze is the main focus of variety development in Louisiana, which represents the northernmost sugarcane-growing region worldwide. Antifreeze metabolites, xylem structure, and fiber content represent interrelated physicochemical properties contributing to freeze tolerance. This study first classified the cold tolerance of sugarcane cultivars using metabolites in juice as predictor variables. The best-fit model (XGBoost discriminant analysis) estimated the higher cold tolerance of the final on-station clone progeny to the stress tolerance-inducing wild germplasm line.

Spatial relationships between mosquito breeding sites and malaria cases in rural Uganda: Implications for larval source management.

BACKGROUND: Larval source management (LSM) has been a core strategy of malaria control but is difficult to implement in holoendemic regions of rural sub-Saharan Africa. More targeted approaches that reduce the burden of effort, but maintain impact are needed. METHODS: The prospective cohort study examined the spatial relationship between mosquito breeding sites and malaria cases to guide targeted LSM. After enrolling households across three villages, we recorded malaria cases from neighboring health facilities and conducted larval and adult mosquito surveillance. Breeding site density was ass…

Unveiling brucellosis risks in breeding herds: Case study on diagnostic failures and control gaps in South Africa.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic pathogen of livestock, wildlife and humans, with significant implications for reproductive losses and public health. The movement and introduction of breeding animals with unknown status into previously Brucella-negative herds pose a risk for disease introduction and sustained transmission. This case study documents two independent brucellosis outbreaks integrating epidemiological observations with serial serological testing, bacteriological culture and molecular confirmatory assays following abortion events. Diagnostic tests were performed, including serology, PCR an…

Transmission of Salmonella clones between different animal species in a horse and cattle breeding region in Japan.

Sequence type 34 (ST34) Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and its monophasic variant (Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:-) are the most prevalent clones among humans and animals worldwide, including in Japan. Although cross-species transmission may have occurred in the background of global spread, the matter remains unresolved. Here, we conducted high-resolution phylogenetic analysis using whole-genome sequencing data of Salmonella Typhimurium and 4,[5],12:i:- obtained from a horse and cattle breeding district in Japan and identified cases of cross-species transmission of ST34 Salmonella 4,[5],12:i:…

Metabolomic-genomic prediction realizes small increases in accuracy of estimated breeding values for daily gain in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Metabolomic profiling of blood samples can be done on selection candidates and could be a valuable information source for genetic evaluation of pigs. We hypothesized that integrating metabolomic data from pigs without individual phenotypes into the metabolomic-genomic best linear unbiased prediction (MGBLUP) model would generate estimated breeding values (EBVs) with a higher accuracy compared to what would be obtained without metabolomic data. We tested this hypothesis by predicting breeding values for average daily gain (ADG) using phenotypic, genomic, and metabolomic data. MGBLUP…

Breeding of triploid Undaria pinnatifida through crossing aposporous gametophytes derived from doubled haploid sporophytes with haploid gametophytes.

Undaria pinnatifida is an economically important kelp that is extensively farmed in East Asia. Increasingly severe ocean warming makes it urgent to breed new cultivars that are resistant to higher temperatures. Breeding of triploid sporophytes is a potential way to achieve this purpose. Diploid gametophytes were previously produced via apospory from heterozygous sporophytes; however, their sex was not pure, making it difficult to conduct a precise cross. In the present study, we addressed this issue by means of obtaining aposporous diploid gametophytes from doubled haploid sporophytes that wer…

Survival mechanisms of preselected breeder honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies under Varroa-infestation: Selective breeding of natural selection.

Including other stressors, global losses of honeybee colonies are attributed to Varroa destructor. Among control measures, breeding resistant bee strains are promising and eco-friendly, though the mechanisms involved are complex. This study evaluated mite fall, mite population, colony development (brood and adult population), and viral infestations across three groups: Group A (hygienic, low grooming), Group B (non-hygienic, high grooming), and Group C (Intermediate traits) from June to October 2024. Groups B and C had lower colony mortality than Group A. Although the average number of fallen …

Delayed Reproduction, Injury, and Regeneration of Testes in Out-of-Season Breeding of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus nigricans).

Out-of-season breeding is an effective method for addressing seasonal shortages of fry in aquaculture species such as largemouth bass (LMB) for year-round production. Off-season breeding of LMB can be achieved by subjecting breeding LMB to prolonged low-temperature conditions; however, this can alter reproductive rhythms, affecting the quality of their sperm and leading to a decrease in reproductive efficiency. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate issues such as the damage to the testes and the related mechanisms caused by low-temperature stress during out-of-season breeding. In this experi…

Genetic Variation and Heritability for Hydrogen Cyanide in Fresh Cassava Roots: Implications for Low-Cyanide Cassava Breeding.

Breeding for low-hydrogen-cyanide (HCN) varieties is a major objective of programs targeting boiled cassava food products. To enhance the breeding of low-HCN varieties, knowledge of genetic variation and trait heritability is essential. In this study, 64 cassava clones were established across four locations and evaluated for HCN using three HCN assessment methods: one with a 1 to 9 scale, on with a 0 ppm to 800 ppm scale, and a quantitative assay based on spectrophotometer readings (HCN_Spec). Data were also collected on the weather variables precipitation, relative humidity, and temperature. …

Amniotic Mesenchymal-Derived Extracellular Vesicles and Their Role in the Prevention of Persistent Post-Breeding Induced Endometritis.

Persistent post-breeding induced endometritis (PPBIE) is considered a major cause of subfertility in mares. It consists of persistent or delayed uterine inflammation in susceptible mares. There are many options for the treatment of PPBIE, but in this study, a novel approach aimed at preventing the onset of PPBIE was investigated. Stallion semen was supplemented with extracellular vesicles derived from amniotic mesenchymal stromal cells (AMSC-EVs) at the time of insemination to prevent or limit the development of PPBIE. Before use in mares, a dose-response curve was produced to evaluate the eff…

Policies to promote breeding for lice-resistant salmon: Incentives designed for resilient and sustainable growth in aquaculture.

Sea lice represent a persistent and growing problem, challenging the resilience and growth of the salmon aquaculture industry. In this Norwegian case study, we studied and discuss how the absence of policy instruments directed at stimulating breeding for lice resistance (LR) might be explained. We found well-documented opportunities for selection progress for LR. Hence, breeding on LR appears with an untapped potential. We discuss how market-based, legal, institutional and interest-based factors can explain the absence of policy instruments stimulating LR breeding. Methodologically, we obtaine…
